Heute bin ich seit Jahren noch mal eine Oldtimer Rallye mitgefahren. Es war die Rallye der "Oldtimerfreunde Kirkel-Limbach". Today I have been participating in a classic car rally for years. It was the rally of the "Oldtimerfreunde Kirkel-Limbach".
Normalerweise ist es eine der großen Veranstaltungen der Region Saarpfalz, geht über zwei Tage und hat Traktoren und Autos/Motorräder. Es nehmen immer über 100 Oldtimer teil. Leider konnte der Verein dieses Jahr nur die Auto/Motorrad Rallye veranstalten und das auch nur mit 70 Fahrzeugen. Das eigentliche Fest und der Tag mit den Traktoren konnte wegen COVID 19 Pandemie nicht stattfinden. Die Fahrzeuge wurden gemäß dem Hygienekonzeptes in 4 Gruppen aufgeteilt, welche alle unterschiedliche Strecken fuhren. So konnte die Anzahl Personen an den Kontrollpunkten reduziert werden. Das hat super funktioniert. Außerdem kamen einem immer wieder Fahrzeuge auf der Strecke entgegen. Das ist auch nicht schlecht.
Usually it is one of the big events of the Saarpfalz region, goes over two days and has tractors and cars/motorcycles. There are always over 100 vintage cars taking part. Unfortunately, this year the club could only organize the car/motorbike rallye, and only with 70 vehicles. The actual festival and the day with the tractors could not take place because of COVID 19 pandemic. The vehicles were divided into 4 groups according to the hygiene concept, which all drove different routes. So the number of people at the checkpoints could be reduced. That worked great. In addition, there were always vehicles on the track coming towards you. That is not bad either.
Der Tag fing für mich schon um 06:30 an, um den Wagen vorzubereiten. Ich wollte noch die Frontscheibe im Fensterrahmen besser fixieren. Die Dichtung ist schon ziemlich verbraucht, die Glasscheibe vibriert im Rahmen und das hört man dann auf den Videos der Kamera, welche an der Scheibe befestigt ist. Die Papierstreifen, welche ich in den Rahmen steckte, verstärkten aber eher die Vibrationen. Die Scheibe machte den ganzen Tag viel Lärm, obwohl wir immer versuchten die Vibrationen zu dämpfen.
The day began for me already at 06:30 to prepare the car. I wanted to fix the windshield in the window frame better. The seal is already pretty worn out, the glass pane is vibrating in the frame and you can hear that on the videos of the camera which is fixed to the pane. The paper strips I put into the frame increased the vibrations. The glass made a lot of noise all day long, although we always tried to dampen the vibrations.
Das besondere an der Rallye ist der Umstand, dass eine unglaubliche Mischung an Fahrzeugen kommen. Hier mal eine kleine Auswahl.

Leider konnten wir dieses Jahr aufgrund der Corona bedingten Aufteilung in 4 Gruppen nur einen kleinen Teil der Autos sehen.

Jetzt möchte ich unsere Story erzählen:
Die Strecke war super. Sie zeigte den Teilnehmer nur die besten Straßen und Landschaft der Region. Respekt vor den Organisatoren. Es wurden alle notwendigen Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung der Pandemie organisiert und eingehalten, ohne dabei das Erlebnis für die Teilnehmer zu sehr einzuschränken. Das funktioniert.
Am Start wurde, wie es sich gehört, das Fahrzeug vorgestellt. Es war sogar ein Reporter gekommen, um nur über das Model-T zu berichten. Es war das älteste Fahrzeug der Veranstaltung.
Ich war nicht allein. Markus übernahm als Beifahrer die Navigation und einen Teil der technischen Aufsicht. Und wir hatten Richard als Gast auf dem Rücksitz.
Now I want to tell our story:
The track was great. It showed the participants only the best roads and landscape of the region. Respect for the organizers. All necessary measures to contain the pandemic were organized and followed without limiting the experience for the participants too much. It works.
At the start, the vehicle was presented, as it should be. There was even a reporter who came to report only on the Model-T. It was the oldest vehicle of the event.
I was not alone. Markus took over the navigation and part of the technical supervision as co-driver. And we had Richard in the back seat as a guest.
Nach dem Start mussten wir am Ortsausgang durch einen Kreisverkehr. Dabei öffnete sich die hintere Tür und das Lunchpaket viel aus dem Wagen um sich im ganzen Kreisverkehr zu verteilen. Super Start! Zum Glück hat es niemand gesehen.
After the start we had to go through a traffic circle at the end of the village. Thereby the back door and the packed lunch opened a lot out of the car to spread all over the traffic circle. Great start! Fortunately nobody saw it.
Das Verlieren von irgendwelchen Gegenstände zog sich als Running Gag durch die ganze Fahrt. Fast hätten wir die Abdeckung des Verdecks verloren.
"Meine Mütze! Sie ist weggeflogen!" ruft Richard aufgeregt vom Rücksitz, als wir gerade versuchen einen neuen Model-T Geschwindigkeitsrekord aufzustellen. Da wir einen steilen Berg runterfahren, dauert es etwas bis wir anhalten können und es dauert auch etwas länger bis Richard zurückgelaufen ist, um die Mütze aufzusammeln. Viel Zeit, die Markus nutzen kann, sich mit der Kamera vertraut zu machen.
Losing any objects was a running gag throughout the whole ride. We almost lost the cover of the soft top.
"My cap! It flew away!" Richard excitedly shouted from the back seat as we were trying to set a new Model-T speed record. Since we are going down a steep hill it takes a little while before we can stop and it also takes a little while until Richard runs back to pick up the cap. A lot of time that Markus can use to get familiar with the camera.
Wir erreichen aber alle Kontrollpunkte, an denen es immer etwas zu essen gibt. Die Rallye heißt übrigens nicht ohne Grund "Gourmet-Rallye". But we reach all checkpoints where there is always something to eat. By the way, the rally is not called "Gourmet Rally" for nothing.

Am zweiten Kontrollpunkt gab es regionale Spezialitäten. Das Mittagessen gab es am dritten Rastplatz, an dem es sogar einen Flohmarktstand mit Oldtimer spezifischen Dingen gab.
At the second checkpoint there were regional specialties. Lunch was served at the third rest area, where there was even a flea market stand with oldtimer specific things.
Wie hat das Model-T die Rallye überstanden?
Mit 20km An- und Abfahrt ist es heute 180km gefahren. Dabei gab es viele Bergstrecken zu meistern. Viele Berge sind wir im zweiten Gang hochgekommen. Der Kühler ist trotz sommerlichen Temperaturen nie übergekocht. Der Reisebus hat uns auf einer Teilstrecke ziemlich ausgebremst. Der Ford ist also nicht das langsamste Fahrzeug im Teilnehmerfeld.
Ich muss jetzt das Band der Bremse noch mal nachstellen. Nach den 180km lassen sich die Räder nicht mehr blockieren.
Gab es Ausfälle oder Schäden am Wagen? Nein, zumindest nichts schlimmes. Eine Lötstelle am Kühlerrahmen hat sich gelöst. Sie stand aber unter Spannung, da der Kühler nicht ganz zum Abstand der Schrauben passte. Das ist schnell repariert. Es sieht so aus, als würde der Wagen durch die Nutzung im Alltag immer robuster werden.
How did the Model-T survive the rally?
With 20km up and down it went 180km today. There were many mountain routes to master. We climbed many mountains in second gear. The radiator never boiled over despite summer temperatures. The coach slowed us down quite a bit on one leg. So the Ford is not the slowest vehicle in the field of participants.
Now I have to readjust the tape of the brake again. After the 180km the wheels can't be locked anymore.
Were there any breakdowns or damage to the car? No, at least nothing bad. A soldered joint on the radiator frame has come loose. But it was under tension, because the radiator did not quite fit the distance between the screws. This is quickly repaired. It looks as if the car is becoming more and more robust due to everyday use.
Auch wenn der Magneto Meter nichts zu messen hatte, da der Magneto keine Spannung lieferte, ist er offensichtlich kaputt gegangen und zeigt eine Überspannung an. Auch wenn der Motor aus ist! Der Spannungsmesser ist übrigens kein Originalteil, sondern ein Nachbau aus Taiwan.
Even though the magneto meter had nothing to measure, because the magneto did not supply any voltage, it obviously broke down and indicates an overvoltage. Even if the motor is off! By the way, the voltmeter is not an original part, but a replica from Taiwan.
Eine gute Gelegenheit mal ein Originalteil zu loben. Das mechanische Klaxon Horn hat mich noch nie im Stich gelassen.

Die Rallye fand ihren Abschluss Corona konform im kleinen Kreis an der Vereinshalle.
The rally ended in a small circle at the clubhouse in conformity with Corona rules.
Danach haben wir den Wagen wieder angekurbelt und sind nach Hause gefahren.
Then we cranked up the car again and drove home.
Zurück in Saarbrücken haben wir wieder getankt und den Verbrauch ausgerechnet: 16,7 Liter für 100km. Das ist jetzt ein Model-T typischer Wert. Ich habe den Verdacht, dass der Tank undicht ist. Nicht so sehr, dass das Benzin auf die Straße tropft. Allerdings ist der Tank am Benzinhahn immer etwas feucht. Vielleicht verdunstet das Benzin dort und führt bei längeren Standzeiten zu den angeblich hohen Verbrauchswerten von über 20 Liter.
Back in Saarbrücken we filled up again and calculated the consumption: 16,7 liters for 100km. This is now a typical Model-T value. I have the suspicion that the tank is leaking. Not so much that the gasoline drips on the road. But the tank at the fuel tap is always a bit damp. Maybe the gasoline evaporates there and leads to the allegedly high consumption values of more than 20 liters during longer standstill periods.
