351. Tag - Fehlersuche 2. Tag / Troubleshooting 2nd day

Licht an der richtigen Stelle zu haben ist immer noch ein Thema in meiner Werkstatt. Vielleicht muss ich noch mal an diesem Thema arbeiten.
Having light in the right place is still an issue in my workshop. Maybe I need to work on this issue again.

Meine schöne Theorie der zwei Gänge die gleichzeitig im Eingriff sind hat sich leider nicht so richtig bestätigt. Es fehlt schlicht der entscheidende Hinweis auf einen Fehler in der Kupplungsmechanik. Darum habe ich das Thema in Facebook gepostet. Einige Gruppenmitglieder haben die Triple Gears in Verdacht. Also die drei Planetenräder, von denen man eines auf dem nächsten Bild im Hintergrund sieht. Offensichtlich kommt es öfter vor, dass die Lagerbuchsen dieser Zahnräder fressen.
My beautiful theory of two gears being engaged at the same time was unfortunately not really confirmed. There is simply no decisive indication of a fault in the clutch mechanism. That's why I posted the topic on Facebook. Some group members suspect the triple gears. That is, the three planetary gears, one of which you can see in the background of the next picture. Apparently it happens more often that the bearing bushings of these gears seize.

Wenn die Triple Gears festsitzen, ist das als würde die Kupplung geschlossen sein. Außerdem würden die Trommeln mitlaufen, was sie ja auch machen. 
Wie kann man diese Theorie beweisen? Wenn die Triple Gears in Ordnung sind, müssten sie sich in den Toleranzen des Zahnflankenspieles bewegen lassen. Vielleicht 1 bis 2mm radiale Bewegung sollten möglich sein. Ich überprüfe das und stelle fest, dass alle drei Triple Gears richtig fest sitzen. Da bewegt sich nichts. Auch mit Hammer un Schraubenzieher bewegt sich hier nichts.

When the triple gears are stuck, it's like the clutch is closed. Also, the drums would run with it, which they do. 

How can you prove this theory? If the Triple Gears are OK, they should be able to move within the tolerances of the backlash. Maybe 1 to 2mm of radial movement should be possible. I check and find that all three Triple Gears are properly tight. Nothing moves. Even with a hammer and screwdriver, nothing moves here.

Nur eines der drei Zahnräder lässt sich axial um 3mm bewegen. Aber auch dieses Zahnrad hat keine radiale Bewegung. Ich glaube damit ist die zweite Theorie hinreichend belegt.
Only one of the three gears can be moved axially by 3mm. But also this gear wheel has no radial movement. I believe that this sufficiently proves the second theory.

Jetzt muss ich nur noch die hohe mentale Barriere überwinden und mich damit abfinden, dass ich den Motor ausbauen muss. Am besten denke ich gar nicht lange darüber nach.

Ich lasse das Öl ab und finde eine Menge Metallpartikel in den Ölablassschrauben.
Now I just have to overcome the high mental barrier and come to terms with the fact that I have to remove the engine. It's best that I don't even think about it for long.

I drain the oil and find a lot of metal particles in the oil drain plugs.

Jetzt baue ich den Kühler ab. Aber zuerst muss das Wasser raus. hierbei mache ich eine interessante Erfahrung: Der Motorausbau dauert kaum länger als das Wasser aus dem Kühler rauslaufen zu lassen.

Während das Wasser unten am Kühler herausläuft habe ich alle elektrischen Leitungen entfernt, den Kardan und die Motorlager abgeschraubt, die Motorhaube entfernt, den Kühler selbst abgeschraubt, die Benzinleitung am Vergaser abgeschraubt und den Auspuff demontiert.
Now I'm going to dismantle the radiator. But first the water has to come out. Here I make an interesting experience: The engine removal takes hardly longer than letting the water run out of the radiator.

While the water is running out at the bottom of the radiator, I have removed all the electrical wires, unscrewed the gimbal and the engine mounts, removed the hood, unscrewed the radiator itself, unscrewed the fuel line at the carburetor, and disassembled the exhaust.

Jetzt kommt endlich nochmal mein schöner 50er Gabelschlüssel zum Einsatz.
Now, finally, my nice 50 open-end wrench comes into use again.

Leider hatte ich den Kettenzug nicht in der Garage, sonst hätte ich den Motor noch herausgehoben. Das hat jetzt keine Stunde gedauert.
Unfortunately, I did not have the chain hoist in the garage, otherwise I would have lifted the engine out. This has now taken less than an hour.

344. Tag - Lösung für das Lichtschalterproblem / Solution for the light switch issue

Beim Einsteigen passiert es mir immer wieder, dass ich den nicht originalen Lichtschalter unter dem Sitz betätige und damit die Scheinwerfer einschalte ohne es selbst zu bemerken. Schon einmal hat mir das die Batterie komplett leer gemacht. Seitdem hatte ich Probleme die Batterie wieder komplett zu laden. Das ist mir heute zum ersten mal wieder gelungen. Ein guter Moment nochmal über den Lichtschalter nachzudenken.
When I get into the car, it always happens that I press the non-original light switch under the seat and turn on the headlights without even noticing it. Already once this has made me the battery completely empty. Since then I had problems to charge the battery completely. Today I succeeded again for the first time. A good moment to think about the light switch again.

Und es gibt eine ganz einfache Lösung. Ich drehe den Schalter einfach um 90°. Jetzt muss der Schalter nach oben gedrückt werden um das Licht anzuschalten. Das wird sicher nicht versehentlich passieren.
And there is a very simple solution. I simply turn the switch 90°. Now the switch has to be pushed up to turn on the light. That will certainly not happen accidentally.

327. Tag - Deplatzierter Lichtschalter / Out of place light switch

Ich habe mich so gefreut  einen passenden Lichtschalter und eine günstige Stelle zur Montage unter dem Sitz gefunden zu haben. Den zusätzlichen Lichtschalter war notwendig um die 12V LED Lampen in den Hauptscheinwerfer separat zu schalten. Lediglich der silberne Aluminiumknopf des Schalters fand ich etwas unpassend und habe ihn  mit einem schwarzen Textilklebeband umwickelt. So weit war das alles gut.

Der Knopf ist aber etwas zu lang und ragt über den Sitz hinaus, vielleicht liegt es aber auch an dem Klebeband. Auf alle Fälle passiert es jetzt immer wieder, dass ich beim Einsteigen mit dem Bein am Schalter hängen bleibe und ohne es zu merken das Licht einschalte. Eine Nacht hat das Model T die Garagenwand angeleuchtet bis die Batterie komplett leer war. Seit Tagen lade ich nun die Batterie immer wieder auf, das Ladegerät hat sie aber noch nicht vollständig laden können. Ich hoffe mal, dass die Batterie nicht beschädigt ist.

I was so happy to have found a suitable light switch and a convenient place to mount it under the seat. The additional light switch was necessary to switch the 12V LED lamps in the main headlight separately. Only the silver aluminum button of the switch I found a bit inappropriate and wrapped it with a black textile tape. So far it was all good.

However, the button is a bit too long and protrudes above the seat, but maybe it is also due to the tape. In any case, it now happens every so often that I get my leg caught on the switch when I get in the car and turn on the lights without realizing it. One night the Model T lit up the garage wall until the battery was completely empty. I have been charging the battery on and off for days now, but the charger has not been able to fully charge it yet. I hope that the battery is not damaged.

309. Tag - schlechte moderne Qualität / Poor Modern Quality

Mein Auto blinzelt mich mit dem rechten Scheinwerfer an. Vielleicht mag es mich, vielleicht ist es aber auch ein Wackelkontakt.

Der Ausbau der modernen LED Lampe zeigt sofort den Grund: Armselige Qualität moderner Leuchtmittel. Diese Lampe hat jemand konstruiert der entweder von nichts eine Ahnung hat oder dem es einfach egal ist welche Qualität sein Produkt hat. Henry hätte sowas nicht in seinen T eingebaut.

Die Platine der LED Konstruktion ist an drei Stellen an den Lampensockel gelötet. Es gibt keine formschlüssige Verbindung von Lampensockel und Platine. Beim wieder anlöten der Platine zeigt sich außerdem, dass die Oberfläche des Sockels auch nicht wirklich zum Löten geeignet ist.

Mal sehen wie lange das jetzt den Vibrationen des Model-Ts standhält.

My car blinks at me with its right headlight. Maybe it likes me, or maybe it's a loose contact.

The removal of the modern LED lamp immediately shows the reason: Poor quality of modern illuminants. This lamp was designed by someone who either doesn't know anything about anything or just doesn't care about the quality of his product. Henry would not have built something like this into his T.

The circuit board of the LED construction is soldered to the lamp base in three places. There is no positive connection between lamp socket and PCB. When soldering the PCB back on, it also shows that the surface of the base is not really suitable for soldering either.

Let's see how long this will withstand the vibrations of the Model-T.

234. Tag - Messingkappen und Scheinwerfer / Hub Cap And Head Lights

Die lackierten hinteren Nabenkappen haben Kratzspuren im Lack. Wo kommen die her? Da ich ja noch die vorderen Kappen polieren und lackieren muss, mache ich halt die hinteren nochmal neu.
The painted rear hubcaps have scratch marks in the paint. Where do they come from? Since I still have to polish and paint the front caps, I'll just redo the rear ones.

Noch ein unerklärliches Phänomen. Der linke Hauptscheinwerfer funktioniert nicht mehr. Ich wollte aber nicht auf der Fahrt, sondern später in der Garage den Fehler suchen. Als ich dort ankam, hat der Scheinwerfer wieder funktioniert. Zur Sicherheit habe ich überprüft, ob es irgendwo einen Wackelkontakt gibt. Ich habe aber nichts gefunden.
Another unexplained phenomenon. The left main headlight no longer works. However, I did not want to look for the error on the ride, but later in the garage. When I got there, the headlight worked again. To be on the safe side, I checked if there was a loose contact somewhere. But I did not find anything.

203. Tag - Dunkles Licht / Dark Light

Kann eine Öllampe sowas wie einen Massefehler haben? Also einen Fehler, der die Lampe nur glimmen läßt, statt hell zu leuchten?
Ja das habe ich heute erlebt. Ich hatte da schon ein halbes Jahr eine Flasche Lampenpetroleum mit einem kleinen Loch. Da die Flasche mit dem kleinen Loch nach oben lag, ist das Petroleum nicht ausgelaufen. Als ich es gestern in die Öllampe des Fords schüttete dachte ich schon, ob es vielleicht nicht mehr brennen wird. Aber sollte Petroleum in einer offenen Flasche nicht eher verflüchtigen? Die Lampe war randvoll, brannte aber nur mit einer dunklen bläulichen Flamme. Auf dem Bild sieht man die Flamme der rechten Lampe gar nicht, so dunkel ist sie.

Als ich heute nochmal ein Bild aus der nähe machen wollte wurde es dann richtig unheimlich. Der Tank der Lampe war komplett leer.

Can an oil lamp have something like a ground fault? So a fault that makes the lamp only glow instead of shining brightly?

Yes, that's what I experienced today. I had a bottle of lamp petroleum with a small hole in it for half a year. Since the bottle was with the small hole facing up, the kerosene did not leak. Yesterday, when I poured it into the Ford's cowl oil lamp, I was already thinking whether it might stop burning. But shouldn't kerosene in an open bottle be more likely to volatilize? The lamp was full to the brim, but only burned with a dark bluish flame. You can't even see the flame of the right lamp in the picture, it's so dark.

When I wanted to take another picture today, it was really scary. The tank of the lamp was completely empty.

160. Tag - Cowl lamp vs. bright LED light

 

Das Model T bestimmt etwas meinen Tagesablauf. Heute bin ich früher nach Hause gefahren, als ich es eigentlich wollte, um Batteriestrom zu sparen. OK eigentlich ist nicht das Model T, sondern der immer noch nicht funktionierende Magneto dran schuld. Trotzdem war ich nicht früh genug um nicht in die Dämmerung zu kommen.
Die LED Tageslichter der modernen Autos haben die Wahrnehmung der Verkehrsteilnehmer geändert. Obwohl es noch hell genug ist, signalisieren entgegenkommende Autos mit der Lichthupe, dass man noch kein Licht eingeschaltet hat. Irgendwie habe ich auch den Eindruck, dass die Welt dunkler wirkt, wenn man von dem extrem hellen LED Licht der Autos geblendet wird. Sobald keine Autos mehr entgegen kommen wird es wieder heller.
Heute habe ich ein Test gemacht und ausprobiert, ob das Pedroleum Stadtlicht des Model Ts den LED Lichtern etwas entgegensetzen kann.
Ja es funktioniert. Obwohl ich die letzten Kilometer schon in die Dämmerung gefahren bin, hat niemand die Lichthupe betätigt. :-)

The Model T somewhat determines my daily routine. Today I drove home earlier than I wanted to in order to save battery power. OK actually not the Model T, but the still not working magneto is to blame. Still, I wasn't early enough to avoid getting into the twilight.

The LED daylights of modern cars have changed the perception of road users. Even though it's still bright enough, oncoming cars signal with their flashers that you don't have your lights on yet. Somehow I also have the impression that the world seems darker when you are blinded by the extremely bright LED light of the cars. As soon as there are no more cars coming towards you, it gets brighter again.

Today I did a test and tried if the sowl lamp of the Model Ts can counter the LED lights.

Yes it works. Although I drove the last kilometers already into the twilight, nobody pressed the light flasher. :-)

154. Tag - Schraubenfertigung / Crew Manufacturing

Heute muss ich noch schnell eine Zollschraube bauen, damit ich den Bremslichtschalter montieren kann. hierzu möchte ich eine Mutter an das Reststück der gekürzten Schraube schweißen. Ich muss mir mal dringend ein Sortiment Zollschrauben zulegen, damit ich sowas nicht mehr machen muss. Aber am Ende halte ich eine funktionierende Schraube in der Hand und kann den Bremslichtschalter montieren. Das Bremslicht funktioniert jetzt hervorragend.
Today I have to quickly build an inch screw so that I can mount the brake light switch. For this I want to weld a nut to the remaining piece of the shortened screw. I must get me times urgently an assortment inch screws, so that I do not have to do something like that. But in the end I hold a working screw in my hand and can mount the brake light switch. The brake light now works great.

153. Tag - Bremslichtschalter / Stop Light Switch

Diesen Umbau habe ich schon lange geplant. Die alte Bastellösung wird ersetzt und das Model T bekommt jetzt einen neuen Bremslichtschalter. Der neue Schalter besteht aus einem Metallbügel und einem Druckschalter. Der Bügel wird quer über den Servicedeckel des Getriebes montiert und platziert den Schalter links neben die Achse des Bremshebels. Die Konstruktion nutzt den Umstand aus, dass sich die Bremshebelachse bei Betätigung der Bremse nach links verschiebt. Diese Bewegung spannt das Bremsband um die Bremstrommel. Diese Lösung ist wirklich gut, da sie keine lange Zugfeder benötig, die  irgendwie an den Bremshebel befestigt werden muss. Das ist eine andere Lösung, die oft bei Oldtimer zur Anwendung kommt.
I have planned this conversion for a long time. The old tinker solution is replaced and the Model T now gets a new brake light switch. The new switch consists of a metal bracket and a pressure switch. The bracket is mounted across the transmission door and places the switch to the left of the axle of the brake lever. The design takes advantage of the fact that the brake lever axle moves to the left when the brake is applied. This movement tightens the brake band around the brake drum. This solution is really good because it doesn't require a long tension spring that somehow has to be attached to the brake lever. This is another solution that is often used on vintage cars.

Allerdings gibt es zwei Dinge zu beachten.
Falls man einen gebogenen Servicedeckel hat muss man ihn herumdrehen, damit der Buckel des Deckels nicht nach außen, sondern in das Getriebe hinein ragt. Nur so liegt der Metallbügel dann flach auf und kann festgeschraubt werden.
However, there are two things to keep in mind. 

If you have a curved transmission door, you have to turn it around so that the hump of the door does not protrude outward but into the gearbox. This is the only way to ensure that the metal bracket lies flat and can be screwed tight.

Dann fällt einem auf, dass die originalen Schrauben des Servicedeckels zu kurz sind um den Metallbügel festzuschrauben. Sehr schade, dass nicht gleich zwei passende Schrauben mitgeliefert werden. Das würde die Kundenzufriedenheit sicher erhöhen. 
Then you notice that the original screws of the transmission door are too short to tighten the metal bracket. It is a pity that two matching screws are not included. That would certainly increase customer satisfaction. 

Und schon wieder habe ich das Problem eine passende Zollschraube zu finden. Eine fand ich sogar und muss morgen versuchen daraus zwei Schrauben zu basteln.
And again I have the problem to find a suitable inch screw. One I even found and must try tomorrow to make two screws from it.

Hier kommt jetzt der Funktionstest. Die Konstruktion funktioniert auf Anhieb.
