343. Tag - Benzinhahn Reparatur / Fuel cock repairsammlers

In der Facebook Gruppe "Model T Ford Owners" hat man mir eine hervorragende Anleitung gegeben, wie ich den Benzinhahn unter dem Tank dicht bekomme. Die Anleitung lautet so:
- Wassersammler ausbauen
- Benzinhahn ausbauen
- Benzinhahn mit Schleifpaste in den Sitz einschleifen (wie bei den Ventilen)
- Benzinhahn und Wassersammler wieder einbauen
Statt einer Ventilschleifpaste habe ich kurzfristig nur eine Polierpaste für Lack bekommen. Da es aber angeblich auch mit Zahnpasta funktioniert, versuche ich es mit der Lackpolitur einfach mal.
In the Facebook group "Model T Ford Owners" I was given excellent instructions on how to get the fuel tap under the tank tight. The instructions read like this:
- Remove sediment bowl assembly
- Remove fuel cock
- Grind fuel cock into seat with abrasive paste (same as valves)
- Reinstall fuel cock and sediment bowl assembly
Instead of a valve grinding paste I only got a polishing paste for varnish at short notice. But since it supposedly also works with toothpaste, I just try it with the lacquer polish.

Zuerst lassen wir das Benzin aus dem Tank laufen und montieren den Wassersammler ab. Da der Ablasshahn etwas verstopft ist, müssen wir etwas nachhelfen.
First, we let the gasoline run out of the tank and dismount the water collector. Since the drain cock is a bit clogged, we have to help a bit.

Beim Herausschrauben des Wassersammlers kommt noch der Rest Benzin aus dem Tank.
When unscrewing the water collector, the rest of the gasoline still comes out of the tank.

Mit etwas Schleifpaste und einer Bohrmaschine (Ein Trick aus der Facebookgruppe) lässt sich der Konus schnell einschleifen. 
With some grinding paste and a drill (A trick from the Facebook group), the cone can be quickly ground in.

Wir machen einen ersten Dichtheitstest ohne die Feder zu montieren.
We make a first tightness test without mounting the spring.

Der Benzinhahn scheint dicht zu sein.

Auch komplett zusammengebaut ist der Benzinhahn dicht. Wir montieren ihn wieder am Tank na und gereinigt nachdem wir ihn im Eimer mit dem abgelassenen Benzin ausgespült und gereinigt haben. Da kommt eine Menge Dreck heraus. Das Telefon im Eimer dient dem Größenvergleich.
Even completely assembled, the fuel tap is tight. We mount it back on the tank na and cleaned after rinsing and cleaning it in the bucket with the drained gasoline. A lot of dirt comes out of it. The phone in the bucket is for size comparison.

Ich versuche nochmal meinen Kaffeefilter eine sinnvollen Verwendung zu geben. Mit Benzin funktioniert er. Am Ende dauert es mir aber doch zu lange und ich nehme einen Lappen zum Filtern.
I'm trying again to give my coffee filter a useful use. It works with gasoline. In the end, however, it takes me too long and I take a rag to filter.

Auch am Tank montiert scheint der Benzinhahn jetzt dicht zu sein. Ich hoffe, dass der Benzinverbrauch jetzt noch etwas weniger wird, wenn kein Benzin mehr am Benzinhahn verdunstet.
Also mounted on the tank, the fuel tap now seems to be tight. I hope that the gasoline consumption will now be a little less when no more gasoline evaporates at the fuel tap.

319. Tag - undichter Benzinhahn / leaking sediment bowl assembly

Ist das normal? Der Benzinhahn unter dem Tank ist undicht. Das Benzin kommt auf beiden Seiten des Hahns heraus. Nicht so viel das etwas herunter tropft, aber genug um den  Sedimentsammler ständig zu benetzen. Da werden sicher einige Liter in der Woche verloren gehen. Ich muss das klären und abstellen.
Is this normal? The fuel tap under the tank is leaking. Gasoline is coming out both sides of the petcock. Not so much that anything drips down, but enough to constantly wet the sediment bowl. There's bound to be a few litters lost a week. I need to get this cleared up and turned off.

318. Tag - Aktueller Verbrauch / Current consumption

 

Meinen Reservekanister hatte ich vor ein paar Tagen in das Motorrad, einer BMW R25/3 von 1954 gefüllt. Ein Benzinschlauch des Motorrades war porös, der Tank vollständig trocken.
Also dachte ich, dass es eine gute Idee ist, schon heute zur Tankstelle zu fahren und den Benzintank des Model Ts und den Reservekanister zu füllen.
Dabei habe ich nochmal den aktuellen Verbrauch ausgerechnet. Ich bin 118,2km gefahren und habe 19 Liter Benzin getankt. Das ist ziemlich genau ein Verbrauch von 16l/100km. Das ist für Kurzstrecken in der Stadt ziemlich gut. Wobei ich auch sehr entspannt gefahren bin. Mit dem Verbrauch bin ich sehr froh. Außerdem habe ich festgestellt, dass der Absperrhahn am Tank nicht ganz dicht ist. Der Wassersammler ist immer mit etwas Benzin benetzt. Darum werde ich mich demnächst kümmern. Vielleicht geht dann der Verbrauch noch weiter runter.
I had filled my spare canister into the motorcycle, a 1954 BMW R25/3, a few days ago. A gasoline hose of the motorcycle was porous, the tank completely dry.
So I thought it would be a good idea to go to the gas station already today and fill the Model T's gas tank and the spare can.
While doing so, I calculated the current consumption again. I drove 118.2km and filled up with 19 liters of gasoline. That's pretty much a consumption of 14,7mpg. That is pretty good for short distance traffic in the city. Whereby I also drove very relaxed. I am very happy with the consumption. I also noticed that the stopcock on the tank is not completely tight. The water collector is always wetted with some gasoline. I will take care of that soon. Maybe then the consumption will go down even further.

186. Tag - Zu wenig Benzin / Too Little Gasoline

Eigentlich sollte man denken, dass ein Auto auf einer schrägen Plattform leicht aus der Garage gefahren werden kann. Falsch gedacht. Nicht dass der Tank leer war, sowas passiert mir hoffentlich nicht ein zweites mal, aber der Tanklevel war so niedrig, dass das Benzin nicht mehr zum Vergaser kam. Das Model T hat ja wie vermutlich alle Autos dieser Zeit keine elektrische Benzinpumpe. Der Tank unter dem Sitz liegt etwas höher als der Vergaser und das Benzin gelangt über die Schwerkraft zum Vergaser. Also sollte man die Schwerkraft besser nicht ausschalten. Genau das ist aber quasi passiert. 
Der Wagen steht mit den Vorderräder in einer Mulde, die verhindern soll, dass der Wagen bei gekippter Plattform herunter rollt. Die Mulde funktioniert leider ziemlich gut. Wie bekomme ich jetzt den Wagen aus der Garage?

Wenn ich ihn aus der Mulde schiebe, komme ich nicht schnell genug oder überhaupt nicht in den Wagen um die Bremse zu aktivieren und zu verhindern, dass er über die Straße ins nächste parkende Auto rollt.
Ich könnte ihn starten, wenn er wie im oberen Bild auf der fast waagerechten hochgefahrenen Plattform steht und ihn erst mal aus der Mulde herausfahren. Danach könnte ich die Plattform ablassen und den Wagen herausfahren, oder wenn der Vergaser leer läuft den Wagen herausrollen lassen. Diese Idee ist mir aber erst jetzt gekommen, also habe ich folgendes gemacht:
Hinter dem Lenkrad sitzend, habe ich versucht so stark zu wippen, bis der Wagen aus der Mulde rollt. Zum Glück hat mich dabei niemand beobachtet. Aber es hat funktioniert. Eine Lösung die vermutlich auch nur beim Model T funktionieren kann.
Dann ging es erst mal zur Tankstelle.
Actually, you would think that a car on a sloping platform can be easily driven out of the garage. Wrong thought. Not that the tank was empty, hopefully that won't happen a second time, but the fuel level was so low that the gasoline couldn't get to the carburetor. The Model T, like probably all cars of that time, has no electric fuel pump. The tank under the seat is a little higher than the carburetor and the gasoline gets to the carburetor by gravity. So it's better not to turn off gravity. But this is exactly what happened.
The car sits with the front wheels in a trough, which is supposed to prevent the car from rolling down when the platform is tilted. Unfortunately, the trough works pretty well. How do I get the car out of the garage now?
When I push it out of the trough, I can't get into the car fast enough or at all to apply the brakes and keep it from rolling across the street into the next parked car.
I could start it when it is on the almost horizontal raised platform as in the picture above and drive it out of the dumpster first. Then I could lower the platform and drive the car out, or when the carburetor runs dry let the car roll out. This idea just came to me though, so here's what I did:
Sitting behind the steering wheel, I tried to rock so hard until the car rolled out of the trough. Fortunately, no one was watching me. But it worked. A solution that probably only works for the Model T.
Then I went to the gas station.

162. Tag - Ein ganz normaler Tankstellenbesuch / A normal visit to a gas station

Ein ganz normaler Besuch der Tankstelle. Das meiste bekomme ich gar nicht mit, wenn ich in die Tanköffnung schaue, damit nichts überläuft. Aber der Wagen sieht alles.
A completely normal visit to the gas station. I don't even notice most of it when I look into the tank opening so that nothing overflows. But the car sees everything.

95. Tag - Landstraße / Rural Road

15,5l/100km oder 15,2 mpg Verbrauch auf der Landstraße. Das ist das Ergebnis der heutigen Fahrt über Landstraßen durch das Saarland. Ich wollte es genau wissen und habe zuerst den Tank randvoll gefüllt und bin dann 63km gefahren. Dabei habe ich gelernt, den Wagen behutsam zu beschleunigen und früher in den schnellen Gang zu wechseln. Mit der neuen Zündspule for den 3. Zylinder läuft der Motor auch wesentlich ruhiger. Ich habe versucht nicht schneller als 50km/h zu fahren. Im Mittel waren es 36,4km/h. Es gab einige Hügel und auch einige rote Ampeln. Am Ende habe ich 9,78l nachgetankt. Ich werde jetzt ein wenig mit Vergaser und Zündung experimentieren und versuchen einen Verbrauch von 12l/100km zu erreichen.

I wanted to know it exactly and first filled the tank to the brim and then drove 63km. I learned to accelerate the car carefully and to change into the fast gear earlier. With the new ignition coil for the 3rd cylinder the engine runs much smoother. I tried not to drive faster than 50km/h. The average was 36,4km/h. There were some hills and also some red lights. In the end I filled up with 9,78l. I will now experiment a bit with carburetor and ignition and try to reach a consumption of 12l/100km.

93. Tag - Tankstelle / Gas Station

Heute gibt es 1 Liter Benzin für 1,109€ (4,93$/gallon) im Angebot. Die Leute benehmen sich verrückt und fahren alle zur Tankstelle. Ich will aber doch nur Tanken um den Verbrauch zu messen. Hilft ja nichts, dann stelle mich halt in die Schlange. Auf einmal steht sogar ein Traktor neben mir, ein riesiger Traktor!

Ich bin jetzt 57,5km gefahren und habe 10,7 Liter nachgetankt. Das sind 18,6 l/100km (für die amerikanischen Freunde: 12,65mpg) im Stadtverkehr. Das hört sich realistisch an.

So ein Tankstellenbesuch ist normalerweise eine schöne Gelegenheit sich mit Leuten zu unterhalten. Leider ist der Lüfter wieder stehengeblieben, da das Lager zu viel Spiel hat und der Fettnipel nicht richtig funktioniert. In der Folge fing das Kühlwasser an zu kochen und ich war etwas abgelenkt. Das Ankurbeln hat dann auch etwas länger gedauert. So haben sich die anderen mehr mit mir, als ich mit ihnen beschäftigt.

Today we offer 1 liter of gasoline for 1,109€ (4,93$/gallon). The people act crazy and all drive to the gas station. But I only want to fill up the tank to measure the consumption. If nothing helps, then just put me in the queue. All of a sudden there is even a tractor next to me, a huge tractor!
I drove 57,5km and filled up 10,7 liters. That is 18.6 l/100km (for the American friends: 12.65mpg) in city traffic. That sounds realistic.
Such a visit to a gas station is usually a nice opportunity to talk to people. Unfortunately the fan stopped again because the bearing has too much play and the grease nipple doesn't work properly. As a result the cooling water started boiling and I was a bit distracted. The cranking then took a little longer. So the others were more occupied with me than I was with them.

90. Tag - Regnerischer Herbsttag / Rainy Autumn Day

Zuerst der Tankcheck: Der Tank ist oben und unten trocken und der Benzinstand hat sich nicht verändert. Wunderbar!
First the tank check: The tank is dry on top and bottom and the fuel level has not changed. Wonderful!

Heute morgen hat noch die Sonne geschienen, doch jetzt fängt es an zu regnen. Aber es ist mit 14°C noch schön warm. Also ein wunderbarer Tag zum Model-T fahren und sich über ein Auto mit Dach zu freuen. Auch wenn ich keine Seitenplanen montiert habe, bleibe ich immer schön trocken. Auch der Scheibenwischer funktioniert gut, auch wenn ich ihn selten benutze.

Hier ein Video von der Fahrt. Am Ende sieht man, wie die Bremse vor der Ampel blockiert und der Wagen etwas ausbricht.
This morning the sun was still shining, but now it starts to rain. But with 14°C it is still nice and warm. So a wonderful day to drive to the Model-T and to be happy about a car with a roof. Even though I did not mount any side tarpaulins, I always stay nice and dry. Also the windshield wiper works well, even if I use it rarely.
Here is a video of the drive. At the end you see how the brake blocks before the traffic light and the car breaks out a bit.

Wieder angekommen kontrolliere ich noch mal den Tank. Etwas Benzin ist doch das Entlüftungsloch des Deckels gekommen. Jetzt macht die Badenwannenform des Deckels auch Sinn. Das Benzin kann so nicht am Tank runterlaufen. Die Unterseite des Tanks ist trocken.
I check the tank again. Some gasoline came through the vent hole of the cap. Now the bathtub shape of the lid makes sense. The gasoline cannot run down the tank. The bottom of the tank is dry.

89. Tag - Erfolg / Success

Heute habe ich den Tank wieder montiert und auf Dichtigkeit geprüft. Der Einbau dauert immer viermal länger als der Ausbau. Ich wollte die Tankbänder zuerst am Rahmen anschrauben und dann mit der Spannschraube um den Tank ziehen. Nach einer halben Stunde habe ich völlig genervt den Tank wieder rausgenommen und die Bänder erst am Tank befestigt und dann auf den Rahmen geschraubt. Den Benzinhahn habe ich mit Teflonband eingeschraubt.
Today I reassembled the tank and checked it for leaks. The installation always takes four times longer than the removal. I wanted to screw the tank straps to the frame first and then pull them around the tank with the tensioning screw. After half an hour I took the tank out again, completely annoyed. First I fixed the bands to the tank and then screwed them on the frame. I screwed in the sediment bowl with teflon tape.

Dann wurde es spannend. Ich  fülle die ersten fünf Liter Benzin in den Tank und schaue mir den Tank von unten an. Nichts! Gar nichts! Der Tank ist dicht. Die 6 Tage Tanksanierung waren erfolgreich. 
Then it became exciting. I fill the first five liters of fuel into the tank and look at the tank from below. Nothing! Nothing at all! The tank is tight. The 6 days tank renovation was successful. 

Um ganz sicher zu gehen fülle ich den Tank randvoll auf, schließe den Benzinhahn und werde  morgen prüfen ob noch irgend ein Benzinverlust zu messen ist.
To be on the safe side I fill up the tank to the brim, close the fuel tap and tomorrow I will check if there is still any fuel loss.

Leider wird die Freude doch ein wenig getrübt. Etwas Benzin läuft über und löst sofort den schwarzen Lack auf. Naja, ich sehe es positiv. So kann ich sofort sehen, wenn der Tank undicht ist. Wenn der Tank auch den Vibrationen widersteht und nach einem Monat immer noch nicht dicht ist, kann ich ihn ja mit benzinresistenten Lack neu lackieren.
Unfortunately the joy is a little bit clouded. Some petrol spills over and immediately dissolves the black paint. Well, I see it positive. So I can see immediately if the tank is leaking. If the tank resists the vibrations and is still not tight after a month, I can repaint it with petrol resistant paint.
