347. Tag - Fahrt nach Nideggen / Trip to Nideggen

10:30 Uhr: Ich fahre gleich los nach Nideggen zur „Eifelrundfahrt 1922“. Zuerst prüfe ich nochmal den Benzinhahn. Er scheint noch auf einer Seite leicht mit Benzin benetzt. Es ist aber weniger als früher.

10:30 a.m.: I leave immediately for Nideggen for the "Eifelrundfahrt 1922".  First I check the fuel tap again. It seems to be still slightly wetted with gasoline on one side. But it is less than before.

11:00 Auto springt nicht an. Beide Batterien sind voll aufgeladen, aber beide Sicherungen sind durchgebrannt. Ich kann die Ursache nicht finde, tausche die Sicherungen aus und fahre los.

11:00 Car does not start. Both batteries are fully charged, but both fuses are blown. I can't find the cause, replace the fuses and drive off.

11:15 Der Wagen ist voll getankt, es kann los gehen.

12:30 Nach 40km Fahrt verliert der Wagen kurz an Leistung. Ich fahre an den Straßenrand, da es aber eine ungünstige Stelle ist, fahre ich eine halbe Minute später weiter. Der Wagen zeigt keine Auffälligkeiten mehr.
12:30 After 40km of driving, the car briefly loses power. I pull over to the side of the road, but since it's an awkward spot, I continue half a minute later. The car shows no more abnormalities.

13:00 Ich bin 48 km gefahren. Hinter einem Traktor muss ich langsam machen und der Wagen geht aus. Beim Versuch den Motor wieder anzukurbeln stelle ich fest, dass der Motor sehr schwer dreht. Sollten etwa die Bänder zu fest sein? 
13:00 I have driven 48 km. Behind a tractor I have to slow down and the car stops. When I try to start the engine again, I notice that the engine turns very hard. Should the belts be too tight?

13:15 Ich öffne den Getriebedeckel und prüfe die Bänder. Die Bremstrommel hat zwei Riefen, die mir vorher noch nicht aufgefallen sind. Sonst kann nichts Auffälliges sehen und lockere alle drei Bänder.  Der Motor dreht immer noch schwer. Zwischendurch habe ich beim Fahren ein Klackern gehört. Es war nicht laut und ist wieder Verschwunden. Sollte ein Pleuellager oder Hauptlager gefressen haben?
13:15 I open the transmission cover and check the belts. The brake drum has two grooves that I hadn't noticed before. Can't see anything else noticeable and loosen all three belts.  The engine still turns hard. I heard a clacking noise in between while driving. It was not loud and has disappeared again. Should a connecting rod bearing or main bearing have seized?

14:00 Der Motor ist inzwischen abgekühlt. Der Motor dreht immer noch schwer. Ich bin mir sicher, dass ein Pleuellager oder ein Hauptlager gefressen hat. Damit ist die Veranstaltung "Eifelrundfahrt 1922" für mich erledigt. Wir haben die Hotelzimmer storniert und ich warte auf Markus der mit dem Trailer auf dem Weg zu mir ist. Vielleicht hätte ich doch noch die Lager kontrollieren sollen, wie ich es eigentlich geplant hatte.
14:00 The engine has cooled down in the meantime. The engine is still turning hard. I am sure that a connecting rod bearing or a main bearing has seized. So the event "Eifelrundfahrt 1922" is finished for me. We cancelled the hotel rooms and I wait for Markus who is on his way to me with the trailer. Maybe I should have checked the bearings as I had planned.

14:30 Ein Geländewagen hält und der Fahrer Daniel bietet Hilfe an. Die nehme ich gerne an und wir schleppen das Model-T zum nächsten Parkplatz. Bei den letzten Meter auf dem Parkplatz versuche ich beim Anschleppen den Motor zu starten. Er dreht und läuft aus eigener Kraft. Da ich aber zu nahe hinter dem Geländewagen stehe, stelle ich den Motor wieder ab.
14:30 An off-road vehicle stops and the driver Daniel offers help. I gladly accept and we tow the Model-T to the next parking lot. During the last meters on the parking lot, I try to start the engine while towing it. It turns and runs under its own power. But since I'm standing too close behind the off-road vehicle, I turn the engine off again.

14:45 Der Wagen steht auf dem Parkplatz. Ich versuche ihn nochmal anzukurbeln und stelle mit großer Überraschung fest, dass der Motor wieder leicht dreht. Der Motor springt sofort an als wäre nichts gewesen. ????

15:00 Ich rufe Werner an um mit ihm die neue Situation zu besprechen. ich vermute, dass die Pleuellager und Hauptlager nicht beschädigt sind. Ein gefressenes Lager kann nicht durch Drehen des Motors wieder repariert werden. Ein festsitzendes Band könnte sich aber wieder von der Trommel befreien. Ich fahre eine Runde auf dem Parkplatz. Alles funktioniert. Den Wagen habe ich jetzt im Schatten geparkt und überlege was ich jetzt tun sollte, während ich auf Markus mit dem Trailer warte, der in wenigen Minuten kommen sollte.

15:00 I call Werner to discuss the new situation with him. I suspect that the connecting rod bearings and main bearings are not damaged. A seized bearing cannot be repaired by turning the engine. However, a seized belt could come free of the drum again. I take it for a spin in the parking lot. Everything works. I parked the car in the shade now and think about what to do now while I wait for Markus with the trailer, who should arrive in a few minutes.

15:30 Markus ist mit dem Trailer angekommen. Nach langer Besprechung entscheiden wir, doch nach Nideggen zu fahren. Ich möchte nicht aufgeben. Klar der Motor kann jeder Zeit wieder Probleme machen, wir haben aber den Trailer dabei. Auf diesen laden wir jetzt das Model-T, damit wir wenigstens halbwegs pünktlich zum Abendessen ankommen.
15:30 Markus has arrived with the trailer. After a long discussion we decide to go to Nideggen after all. I do not want to give up. Of course the engine can make problems again at any time, but we have the trailer with us. On this we load the Model-T now, so that we arrive at least halfway on time for dinner.

Was ist hier passiert. Ich fasse nochmal alles zusammen:

- Ich hatte vor ein paar Tagen die Bänder nachgestellt und heute zum ersten mal eine längere Strecke gefahren (48km)

- Das Band des ersten Ganges war so eingestellt, dass der Motor  im Leerlauf merklich etwas langsamer lief. Der Wagen ist aber im Leerlauf nicht gefahren

- Nach 20km Fahrt merkte ich, dass der Wagen im Leerlauf ganz langsam nach vorn rollte

- Bei ca. 30km hörte ich ein leises Klackern, das ich nicht zuordnen konnte. Es ging wieder weg.

- Bei 30km hatte  der Wagen kurz einen Leistungsverlust, der aber nach 30 Sekunden wieder weg war.

-  Bei 48 km musste ich abbremsen und der Motor ging aus.

- Ich wollte ihn wieder ankurbeln und bemerkte, dass sich der Motor nur sehr schwer drehen ließ. Der Anlasser konnte den Motor nicht drehen.

- Ich öffnete den Getriebedeckel. Das Öl dampfte, aber die Wassertemperatur war vorher beim Fahren nicht zu hoch.

- Ich lockerte alle drei Bänder, doch der Motor ließ sich noch nicht drehen.

- Ich sah 2 Riefen auf der Bremstrommel im Getriebe, die mir vorher noch nie aufgefallen waren.

- Ich wartete bis der Motor abgekühlt war, doch der Motor ließ sich nicht drehen.

- Der Wagen wurde abgeschleppt, dabei drehte der Motor langsam mit, obwohl der Leerlauf eingestellt war.

- Beim Abschleppen konnte ich den Motor wieder starten. Der Motor lief kurz.

- Danach drehte der Motor wieder leicht, ließ sich leicht starten und hatte die volle Leistung.

- Keine weiteren Auffälligkeiten.

What happened here. I'll summarize everything again:

- I had readjusted the tapes a few days ago and today I drove a longer distance for the first time (48km)

- The band of the first gear was adjusted so that the engine ran noticeably slower at idle. But the car did not run at idle

- After 20km of driving I noticed that the car rolled forward very slowly in idle speed

- At about 30km I heard a quiet clacking noise that I couldn't place. It went away again.

- At 30km the car briefly had a loss of power, but after 30 seconds it was gone again.

- At 48km I had to slow down and the engine went out.

- I tried to crank it again and noticed that the engine was very hard to turn. The starter could not turn the engine.

- I opened the transmission cover. The oil was steaming, but the water temperature was not too high before when driving.

- I loosened all three bands, but the engine still would not turn.

- I saw 2 scores on the brake drum in the transmission that I had never noticed before.

- I waited until the engine cooled down, but the engine would not turn.

- The car was towed, and the engine turned slowly, even though it was set to idle.

- During towing I was able to start the engine again. The engine ran briefly.

- After that, the engine turned again easily, was easy to start and had full power.

- No other abnormalities.

343. Tag - Benzinhahn Reparatur / Fuel cock repairsammlers

In der Facebook Gruppe "Model T Ford Owners" hat man mir eine hervorragende Anleitung gegeben, wie ich den Benzinhahn unter dem Tank dicht bekomme. Die Anleitung lautet so:
- Wassersammler ausbauen
- Benzinhahn ausbauen
- Benzinhahn mit Schleifpaste in den Sitz einschleifen (wie bei den Ventilen)
- Benzinhahn und Wassersammler wieder einbauen
Statt einer Ventilschleifpaste habe ich kurzfristig nur eine Polierpaste für Lack bekommen. Da es aber angeblich auch mit Zahnpasta funktioniert, versuche ich es mit der Lackpolitur einfach mal.
In the Facebook group "Model T Ford Owners" I was given excellent instructions on how to get the fuel tap under the tank tight. The instructions read like this:
- Remove sediment bowl assembly
- Remove fuel cock
- Grind fuel cock into seat with abrasive paste (same as valves)
- Reinstall fuel cock and sediment bowl assembly
Instead of a valve grinding paste I only got a polishing paste for varnish at short notice. But since it supposedly also works with toothpaste, I just try it with the lacquer polish.

Zuerst lassen wir das Benzin aus dem Tank laufen und montieren den Wassersammler ab. Da der Ablasshahn etwas verstopft ist, müssen wir etwas nachhelfen.
First, we let the gasoline run out of the tank and dismount the water collector. Since the drain cock is a bit clogged, we have to help a bit.

Beim Herausschrauben des Wassersammlers kommt noch der Rest Benzin aus dem Tank.
When unscrewing the water collector, the rest of the gasoline still comes out of the tank.

Der Benzinhahn ist schnell demontiert.
The fuel tap is quickly disassembled.

Mit etwas Schleifpaste und einer Bohrmaschine (Ein Trick aus der Facebookgruppe) lässt sich der Konus schnell einschleifen. 
With some grinding paste and a drill (A trick from the Facebook group), the cone can be quickly ground in.

Wir machen einen ersten Dichtheitstest ohne die Feder zu montieren.
We make a first tightness test without mounting the spring.

Der Benzinhahn scheint dicht zu sein.
The fuel tap seems to be tight.

Auch komplett zusammengebaut ist der Benzinhahn dicht. Wir montieren ihn wieder am Tank na und gereinigt nachdem wir ihn im Eimer mit dem abgelassenen Benzin ausgespült und gereinigt haben. Da kommt eine Menge Dreck heraus. Das Telefon im Eimer dient dem Größenvergleich.
Even completely assembled, the fuel tap is tight. We mount it back on the tank na and cleaned after rinsing and cleaning it in the bucket with the drained gasoline. A lot of dirt comes out of it. The phone in the bucket is for size comparison.

Ich versuche nochmal meinen Kaffeefilter eine sinnvollen Verwendung zu geben. Mit Benzin funktioniert er. Am Ende dauert es mir aber doch zu lange und ich nehme einen Lappen zum Filtern.
I'm trying again to give my coffee filter a useful use. It works with gasoline. In the end, however, it takes me too long and I take a rag to filter.

Auch am Tank montiert scheint der Benzinhahn jetzt dicht zu sein. Ich hoffe, dass der Benzinverbrauch jetzt noch etwas weniger wird, wenn kein Benzin mehr am Benzinhahn verdunstet.
Also mounted on the tank, the fuel tap now seems to be tight. I hope that the gasoline consumption will now be a little less when no more gasoline evaporates at the fuel tap.
