335. Tag - Verdeckreparatur / Top Repair

Das Loch im Dach ist zwar schon von innen mit einem Klebeband repariert, es sieht aber von außen nicht so schön aus. Ich möchte jetzt versuchen ob ich die Optik mit schwarzem Silikon noch verbessern kann.Ich reinige das Dach etwas und fülle den Riss mit dem Klebstoff aus.  
The hole in the roof is already repaired from the inside with a tape, but it does not look so nice from the outside. I would now like to try if I can improve the appearance with black silicone. I clean the roof a little and fill the crack with the adhesive.  

Jetzt sieht es etwas besser aus. Ich hoffe, dass es auch hält.

314. Tag - Beetle

Auch wenn der Beetle nicht der Käfer ist, welcher das Model T als meistgebautes Auto ablöste, so hat es doch etwas spezielles mit dem Ur-Käfer und Model T gemeinsam: Das im offenen Zustand aufgesetzte Verdeck. Auch der Beetle ist offen schön anzusehen.
Even though the New Beetle is not the original Beetle that replaced the Model T as the most built car, it does have something special in common with the original Beetle and Model T: The top that is put on when open. The New Beetle is also beautiful to look at when open.

Ich weis nicht wieviel Aufwand es ist das Verdeck eines Beetles zu öffnen. Ein Freund hat es mir aber mal mit seinem Golf I Cabrio demonstriert. Das ist ungefähr so viel Arbeit wie beim Model T. Vielleicht ist das der Grund warum man niemals ein offenes Golf Cabrio fahren sieht. Die Golf Fahrer lassen es einfach aus Faulheit zu. Ich hingegen lasse das Verdeck des Model Ts einfach aus Faulheit offen. :-)
I don't know how much effort it takes to open the top of a Beetle. But a friend of mine demonstrated it with his Rabbit convertible. It's about as much work as the Model T. Maybe that's why you never see a Rabbit convertible open. Rabbit drivers just let it go out of laziness. I, on the other hand, leave the Model T's top down simply out of laziness. :-)

Vom Käfer wurde übrigens 21,5 Millionen gebaut. Dazu brauchte Volkswagen 65 Jahre von 1938 bis 2003. Ford hat in 15 Jahren von 1908 bis 1927 15 Millionen Model Ts gebaut.

Der Umstand, dass Volkswagen 65 Jahre den Käfer bauen konnte lässt sich nur dadurch erklären, dass der Käfer bereits 1938 konstruktiv so ausgereift war, dass er noch bis 2003 verkauft werden konnte. Das Model T hingegen war vom Stand der Technik noch nicht soviel Auto wie man es nach 1927 erwartete, hat aber hat den Automobilbau revolutioniert. Ford hat damit 2,4 mal mehr Autos pro Jahre verkauft als Volkswagen.

By the way, 21.5 million of the Beetle were built. It took Volkswagen 65 years from 1938 to 2003 to do this. Ford built 15 million Model Ts in 15 years from 1908 to 1927.

The fact that Volkswagen was able to build the Beetle for 65 years can only be explained by the fact that the design of the Beetle was already so mature in 1938 that it could still be sold until 2003. The Model T, on the other hand, was not as much of a car as was expected after 1927, but it revolutionized automobile manufacturing. Ford sold 2.4 times more cars per year than Volkswagen.

294. Tag - Dachreparatur / Top Repair

Stell dir vor es regnet Mistgabeln, die Welt geht unter und dein Dach hat ein Loch. Das Wasser wird literweise reinlaufen. Hier ist das Loch:

Das Loch wird von innen über das Loch geklebt. Damit kann das Dach nicht mehr weiter einreißen.
The hole is glued over the hole from the inside. This prevents the roof from tearing further.

Sobald die Regenzeit vorbei ist, versuche ich noch das Loch von außen etwas auszubessern.

Nach der Reparatur ist kein Regenwasser mehr in den Wagen gelangt. Das Wasser, welches davor bis fast ans Lenkrad reichte, ist wohl durch die Bodenbretter abgeflossen. 😁
After the repair, no more rainwater got into the car. The water, which previously reached almost to the steering wheel, has probably drained off through the floorboards. 😁

Wenn wir schon mal beim Reparieren sind, können wir auch gerade den Riss im Polster zukleben.

Hierzu wird ein Spezialkleber aus der Schuhindustrie verwendet. Er kommt von der Pirmasenser Firma Kömmerling und hat den lustigen Namen Kövulfix. Bei Kömmerling habe ich als Student eine Studienarbeit zum Thema Glas mit Silikon kleben gemacht. Kömmerling hat sehr gute Produkte.
While we are at the repair, we can also just glue the tear in the pad.

A special adhesive from the shoe industry is used for this. It comes from the Pirmasens-based company Kömmerling and has the funny name Kövulfix. When I was a student at Kömmerling, I did a study project on bonding glass with silicone. Kömmerling has very good products.

Nach den Reparaturen ist noch Zeit ein interessantes Kundenfahrzeug anzuschauen. Ein hervorragend restaurierter Scania.
After the repairs there is still time to look at an interesting customer vehicle. A superbly restored Scania.

277. Tag - Loch im Verdeck / Hole in the hood

Wenn man mit den Gedanken schon an der Ölwanne ist, kann man das Verdeck schon mal vergessen. Beim Reinrollen in die Werkstatt habe ich vergessen das Verdeck vorher einzuklappen. Zum Glück ist diesmal die Spriegel nicht gebrochen. Aber jetzt habe ich ein Loch im Verdeck. Vermutlich ist das Problem, dass ich jeden Tag mit geschlossenem Verdeck in die Garage fahre, das aber in der Werkstatt wegen dem niedrigeren Tor nicht funktioniert. 
Vielleicht kann ich das Verdeck reparieren lassen. Das Loch ist zum Glück nicht so groß.

When your mind is already on the oil pan, you can forget about the convertible top. When rolling into the workshop, I forgot to fold the top in beforehand. Fortunately, this time the bows are not broken. But now I have a hole in the top. Probably the problem is that I drive into the garage every day with the top down, but it doesn't work in the garage because of the lower door.
Maybe I can get the soft top repaired. Fortunately the hole is not that big.

276. Tag - Besonderheiten des Verdecks / Features of the top

Es gibt jetzt immer wieder Sonnentage an denen es sich lohnt das Verdeck des Wagens zu öffnen und vielleicht auch die Windschutzscheibe herunter zu klappen.

Eine Besonderheit bei dem Verdeck von 1916 sind die zwei Ösen ein den das vordere Gestänge des Verdecks montiert werden können. Man sieht es auf dem ersten Bild. Die obere Stange ist in der Öse rechts eingehängt. Das ist ie Position für das geschlossene Verdeck. So reicht das Verdeck bis zur Windschutzscheibe und kann dort eingehängt werden.
Now there are always sunny days when it is worthwhile to open the top of the car and perhaps also to fold down the windshield.
A special feature of the 1916 top are the two eyelets where the front linkage of the top can be mounted. You can see it on the first picture. The upper rod is hooked into the eyelet on the right. This is the position for the closed top. This way the top reaches up to the windshield and can be hooked there.

In dieser Position steht das Verdeck aber im geöffneten Zustand weit über das heck des Autos heraus.
In this position, however, the top sticks out far over the rear of the car when open.

Darum gibt es noch links eine zweite Öse. Wenn die oberste Stand darin eingesteckt ist, steht sie im geöffnetem Zustand des Verdeckes nicht mehr über.
That is why there is a second eyelet on the left. When the top stand is inserted into it, it no longer protrudes when the top is open.

Das ist ganz schön schlau gelöst, aber auch ein großer Aufwand beim Öffnen und Schließen des Verdeckes. Besonders blöd ist es, dass auch das zweite Rohr umgesteckt werden muss. Allein ist es fast nicht machbar und ich habe darum auch schon einige Kratzer im Lack der Türen, hintere Kotflügel und dem Verdeckgestänge. Das Öffnen geht noch ganz gut, da das Verdeck von alleine nach hinten fällt. Beim Schließen stelle ich mich zwischenzeitlich in den Wagen. Von der der Seite außen hat man keine Kontrolle über die Stangen auf der anderen Seite. Ich achte darauf das Verdeck möglichst ohne Publikum zu schließen. :-)
That's a pretty clever solution, but also a big hassle when opening and closing the top. It is particularly stupid that the second tube must also be repositioned. Alone it is almost not feasible and I have therefore already some scratches in the paint of the doors, rear fenders and the soft top linkage. The opening still goes quite well, because the top falls back by itself. When closing I stand in the meantime in the car. From the side outside you have no control over the rods on the other side. I make sure to close the top without an audience if possible. :-)

200. Tag - Minus 9°C / 16°F

Es geht noch kälter. Ich bin heute bei -9°C 20km in die Stadt Sankt Ingbert gefahren.
It goes even colder. I drove 20km to the city of Sankt Ingbert today at 16°F.

Meine Lernkurve ist steil. Mit Wollmantel, Schal,Winterhandschuhe und einer Wollmütze mit Ohrenklappen ausgestattet kann man auch einen offenen Touring bei den Temperaturen fahren. Auf sonniger Landstraße ist es richtig schön. Im den schattigen Wald wird es ernst. Dort ist es so kalt, dass trotz Mütze und Schal die Kälte im Gesicht schmerzt.
Dan Anderson empfahl mir die Fenster einzubauen "You can get removable side panels for the cars cab. My uncle had them for his 25. Not perfect, but kept some heat in there." Dan kommt aus Iowa City in den USA. Iowa City ist auf der Höhe von Chicago. Dan wird viel Erfahrung mit kalten Winter im Model T haben. Die Fenster sind mir aber zu aufwendig für die kurzen Strecken, die ich im Moment fahre.

My learning curve is steep. Equipped with a wool coat, scarf,winter gloves and a wool hat with earflaps, you can also drive an open touring in the temperatures. On sunny country road it is really nice. In the shady forest it becomes serious. There it is so cold that despite cap and scarf the cold hurts in the face.

Dan Anderson recommended me to install the windows "You can get removable side panels for the cars cab. My uncle had them for his 25, not perfect, but kept some heat in there." Dan is from Iowa City in the USA. Iowa City is on the same level as Chicago. Dan will have plenty of experience with cold winters in the Model T. But the windows are too elaborate for the short distances I drive at the moment.

Bin noch schnell in den Discounter gegangen um das Abendessen einzukaufen. Ein Kofferraum oder ein passender ein Koffer ohne Raum wäre hierzu noch ganz nützlich. Naja der Rücksitz tut es auch.
Mal sehen, was der restliche Tag für mich und dem Model T noch so bereit hält.
Still quickly went to the discount store to buy dinner. A trunk or a matching a suitcase without space would still be quite useful for this. Well, the back seat does it too.
Let's see what the rest of the day holds in store for me and the Model T.

139 Tag - Verrücktes Model-T Karussell / Crazy Model T Carousel

Das Model-T ist wieder auf der Straße. Zuerst habe ich noch schnell den Choke montiert. Das ist eigentlich nur ein Messingdraht, der vom Vergaser durch den Kühlerrahmen geführt wird. Wenn man beim Ankurbeln am Draht zieht, kann man den Vergaser fluten. Das macht man bevor der Zünder angeschaltet wird. So kann man den Motor zwei- bis dreimal mit gezogenem Choke durchdrehen ohne sich dabei die Hand zu brechen. Danach wird die Zündung angeschaltet und der Motor kann gestartet werden.
The Model-T is back on the road. First I quickly mounted the choke. This is actually just a brass wire that runs from the carburetor through the radiator frame. If you pull the wire when cranking, you can flood the carburetor. You do this before the igniter is turned on. This allows you to rev the engine two or three times with the choke pulled without breaking your hand. Then the ignition is switched on and the engine can be started.

Ich habe einen weiten Chokedraht am Armaturenbrett, da mein Ersatzmotor einen Anlasser hat. So kann man den Motor starten ohne den Fahrersitz zu verlassen.
I have a wide choke wire on the dash because my spare engine has a starter. So you can start the engine without leaving the driver's seat.

Dann noch schnell den linken Verdeckriemen montieren. Hier waren die Schrauben noch brauchbar und wurden wieder verwendet.
Then quickly mount the left soft top belt. Here the screws were still usable and were used again.

Die Lederriemen haben noch keine Löcher. Zum Glück habe ich eine spezielle Zange für diesen
Zweck.
The leather straps do not have holes yet. Fortunately, I have special pliers for this purpose.

Ich habe den Abstand von Fensterrahmen zum Verdeck ausgemessen um sicherzustellen, dass das Loch im  linken Lederriemen an der gleichen Stelle wie beim rechten Lederriemen ist. Trotzdem hatte ich dann 3mm Unterschied. Dieser kleine Unterschied fällt tatsächlich auf, wenn man im Wagen sitzt. Ich ertappe mich immer wieder dabei wie ich auf das Dach schaue.
I measured the distance from the window frame to the hood to make sure the hole in the left leather strap was in the same place as the right leather strap. Nevertheless, I then had 3mm difference. This small difference is actually noticeable when sitting in the car. I always find myself looking at the roof.

Ich werde später die Riemen noch kürzen.

Noch eine Kleinigkeit, die ich vor der ersten Fahrt korrigieren möchte: Der Kühler steht zu weit vorn. Vermutlich wegen dem neuen längeren Kühlerschlauch am oberen Zulauf des Kühlers. Das kann man über die Stabilisierungsstange unter der Haube korrigieren. Dabei frage ich mich ob es da eine schönere Methode gibt, als mit der Zange, welche die Stange total verkratzt. Ich habe schon darüber nachgedacht eine Mutter oder vielleicht zwei Flügel anzuschweißen.
Another small thing I would like to correct before the first ride: The radiator is too far forward. Probably because of the new longer radiator hose at the upper inlet of the radiator. This can be corrected via the stabilizing rod under the hood. I wonder if there is a nicer method than using pliers, which totally scratches the rod. I have already thought about welding a nut or maybe two wings.

Die Stange ist jetzt ganz in den Kühler eingeschraubt, aber der Kühler könnte trotzdem noch näher an der Haube sein.
The rod is now screwed all the way into the radiator, but the radiator could still be closer to the hood.

Dann ging es los. Die erste Fahrt nach dem Kühlerschaden. Inzwischen wurde es dunkel, aber ich habe ja die neuen LED Lampen. Alles funktionierte. Selbst der Motor hört sich hinter dem Lenkrad super an. Vielleicht höre ich ja die Flöhe husten. Das Motorklackern fällt jetzt gar nicht auf. Der Wagen fährt super. Ich fuhr 5km durch das Dorf. Viele Leute waren auf den Straßen unterwegs. Es ist ein Traum abends mit dem Model-T durchs Dorf zu fahren. Dann kam ich in den Kreisel und beschloss so viele Runden zu fahren, bis ich mindestens einmal eine Runde habe, in der ich allein ohne andere Autos bin. Es dauerte 17 Runden bis ich die gewünschte Szene auf der Kamera hatte. Ein Vater und sein kleiner Sohn standen irgendwann am Rand und beobachteten die Szene. Ich habe freundlich gegrüßt, in jeder Runde. Der kleine Junge wollte nicht mehr weitergehen. Vielleicht hat es ihn an ein Kinderkarussell erinnert. Könnt ihr den Vater und sein Sohn auf dem Video finden?
Then it was off. The first ride after the radiator damage. In the meantime it was getting dark, but I have the new LED lamps. Everything worked. Even the engine sounds great behind the steering wheel. Maybe I can hear the fleas coughing. The engine clacking is not noticeable at all now. The car drives great. I drove 5km through the village. Many people were on the streets. It is a dream to drive in the evening with the Model-T through the village. Then I came to the traffic circle and decided to drive so many laps until I have at least once a lap where I am alone without other cars. It took me 17 laps to get the scene I wanted on camera. At one point a father and his young son were standing on the side watching the scene. I gave friendly greetings every lap. The little boy didn't want to go any further. Maybe it reminded him of a children's carousel. Can you find the father and his son on the video?

Das sollte man vielleicht öfter machen. Das ist etwas verrückt, aber die Zeiten sind es ja auch gerade. Ein wenig positive Verrücktheit kann da nicht schaden.
Maybe you should do that more often. It's a little crazy, but then again, so are the times. A little positive craziness can't hurt.
