320. Tag - Verbogener Kotflügel / Bent fender

Heute war ein anstrengender Tag. Während ich noch an der Treppe arbeite, laufen ein unglaubliche Menge an Leuten vorbei. Es gibt kaum eine Minute in der niemand das Auto fotografiert. Leider gibt es auch viele Menschen die sich auf das Trittbrett stellen oder ins Auto steigen wollen um Fotos zu machen. Ich kann aber nicht nur auf das Auto aufpassen, sonst wird die Treppe nie fertig. Irgendwann hat sich wohl auch jemand auf den Kotflügel gesetzt. Sehr ärgerlich.

Today was a busy day. While I'm still working on the stairs, an incredible amount of people walk by. There is hardly a minute in which no one takes pictures of the car. Unfortunately, there are also many people who want to stand on the running board or get into the car to take pictures. But I can't just watch the car, otherwise the stairs will never be finished. At some point, someone probably also sat on the fender. Very annoying.

244. Tag - Motorhaube / Hood

Der Wagen fährt deshalb nicht schlechter. Darum habe ich mir bis jetzt nicht die Zeit genommen die Passform der Motorhaube zu verbessern. Der Spalt zwischen Haube und Kühler ist zu groß und die Haube hat eine schlechte Passform. Die Biegungen in der Haube haben einen zu kleinen Winkel, darum steht das Scharnier zu hoch.
The car does not drive worse because of this. That's why I haven't taken the time to improve the fit of the hood until now. The gap between the hood and the radiator is too big and the hood has a bad fit. The bends in the hood have too small an angle, so the hinge is too high.

Das Ergebnis ist gar nicht so schlecht. Jetzt entspricht die Form der Haube der Form des Kühlers und das Scharnier liegt richtig in seiner Führung.

Jetzt will ich versuchen, ob ich den Kühler noch etwas zurücksetzen kann. Der Spalt zwischen Haube und Kühler beträgt 10mm. Mal sehen was ich über die Einstellung der Verbindungsstange zur Spritzwand noch verbessern kann. diese Stange war früher zu kurz. Wir haben sie bei Werner etwas verlängert. Es könnte sein, dass sie jetzt zu lang ist. 

Mit etwas Fett und der großen Zange kann ich den Spalt auf 5mm verringern. Das reicht erst mal. Mit einem passenden Gewindeschneider und einem Winkelschleifer könnte man hier noch mehr erreichen.
Now I want to try if I can reset the radiator a little more. The gap between the hood and the radiator is 10mm. Let's see what I can improve on the adjustment of the connecting rod to the bulkhead. this rod was previously too short. We lengthened it a bit at Werner. It could be that it is too long now. 
With some grease and the big pliers I can reduce the gap to 5mm. That's enough for now. With a suitable tap and an angle grinder, you could achieve even more here.

216. Tag - Spaltmaße / Door Gap

Heute sind mir die Spaltmaße der Türen aufgefallen. Die beiden hinteren Türe haben Spalte, durch die man hindurchsehen kann. Die vordere Beifahrertür schließt hingegen ohne Spalt. Das Model T Touring aus den USA hat keine Fahrertür. Diese ist nur in der Karosserie als Sicke angedeutet.
Diese Spalten fallen eigentlich nur auf, wenn man von innen gegen Licht schaut und haben im täglichen Gebrauch eigentlich keine Auswirkungen. Ich frage mich aber, ob diese Toleranzen schon im Neuzustand vorhanden waren.

Today I noticed the gaps in the doors. The two rear doors have gaps through which you can see. The front passenger door, on the other hand, closes without a gap. The Model T Touring from the USA has no driver's door. This is only indicated in the body as a bead.

These gaps are actually only noticeable when looking from the inside against the light and do not actually have any effect in daily use. I wonder, however, if these tolerances were already present when the car was new.

149 Tag - Rainy T Day

 24 Kilometer bei starkem Regen mit drei Personen und richtig guter Musik. Kann ein Tag besser laufen?24 kilometers in heavy rain with three people and really good music. Can a day go better?

Das Video der Fahrt "Rainy T-Day" ist nicht besonders. Das ist nur das kleine Stück des spannenden Videos, bei dem nicht ein dicker Wassertropfen mitten auf der Linse hing. Am besten schauen sie es sich erst gar nicht an.

Soviel dazu, was das Model T heute erlebt hat. Jetzt zu dem was ich heute erlebt haben.
Wir waren mit 3 Personen unterwegs. Das bedeutet zweierlei: Erstens man hat mehr Spaß auf der Fahrt und zweitens hat man mehr Zeit für eine Fahrt. Der Wagen kommt nämlich viele Steigungen nicht mehr im schnellen  Gang hoch, die man allein fahrend noch schafft. Aber alle Passagiere bleiben trocken, auch ohne Seitenfenster. Der Regen kommt nur bis zur Oberkante der Tür, nicht aber in den Innenraum.
So much for what the Model T experienced today. Now to what I experienced today. 

We were on the road with 3 people. That means two things: First, you have more fun on the road and second, you have more time for a ride. The car can no longer climb many slopes in fast gear, which you can still manage driving alone. But all passengers stay dry, even without side windows. The rain only reaches the upper edge of the door, but not the interior.

Allerdings, kommt der Regen durch den Spalt zwischen Fensterrahmen und Karosserie. Das passiert aber nur, weil hier schlicht die Dichtung fehlt. Und es ist auch nicht viel Wasser und tropft einem nicht auf die Knie wie bei anderen Autos.
However, the rain comes through the gap between the window frame and the body. But that only happens because the seal is simply missing here. And it's not much water and doesn't drip onto your knees like in other cars.

Am Ende war der Wagen naß wie ein Pudel, wir aber trocken.

Jetzt aber eine schlechte Nachricht: Der Thermometer ist nicht dicht. Bin gespannt ob die Reiskörner bis morgen ihren Job tun und die Feuchtigkeit aufnehmen.

Und noch einen Ausfall: Der Scheibenwischer hat sich gelockert. Aufgefallen ist der Scheibenwischer zuerst dadurch, dass er sich immer wieder ins Blickfeld bewegt hat. Sonst ist er immer oben am Fensterrahmen geblieben. Bei richtig starken Regen ist er aber auch ein wenig unpraktisch. Man kann ihn ja nicht ständig bedienen. Die Scheibe ist aber schon nach wenigen Sekunden wieder verregnet.

Zuhause angekommen, fällt mir wieder auf was das Problem ist. Direkt bei der ersten Fahrt mit dem neuen Scheibenwischer hat sich die Mutter gelöst und ist durch den damals noch nicht vollständig vorhandenen Wagenboden gefallen. Aus Ermangelung an Schraubenmuttern im Zollmaß, habe ich metrische Muttern montiert. Das funktioniert natürlich nicht richtig.
Arrived home, I notice again what the problem is. Directly on the first trip with the new wiper, the nut has loosened and has fallen through the then not yet completely existing car floor. For lack of nuts in inch size, I installed metric nuts. Of course, this does not work properly.

Beim Durchsuchen der Kiste mit den alten Schrauben, habe ich dann eine passende Mutter an der Schlauchschelle des Kühlwasserschlauches gefunden.

Jetzt hält der Wischer wieder oben am Scheibenrahmen.

Es gibt aber noch ein anderes Problem mit dem Scheibenwischer. Er ist nicht parallel zur Scheibe. Hier muss man doch etwas machen .....

98. Tag - Batteriekasten / Batterie Box

Mit dem Umstellen der Uhren auf Winterzeit ist es nicht mehr möglich ohne Licht durch den Tag zu kommen. Es wird dringend Zeit Energieversorgung zu sichern. Ganzjährig Sommerzeit würde ich irgendwie besser finden.
When the clocks are set to winter time, it is no longer possible to get through the day without light. It is urgent to secure the energy supply. I would somehow find summer time better all year round.

Es muss eine Batteriebox her in der ich eine zweite Batterie verstauen kann. Die Batterie wird gerne unter den hinteren Boden auf der linken Seite montiert. Es gibt extra einen Batterie halter aus Bandstahl. Leider gerade nicht lieferbar. Darum baue ich einen neuen Boden mit einem Holzkasten drunter. Die Box soll möglichst groß werden, damit ich außer der Batterie auch noch andere Dinge darin unterbringen kann. Den Boden baue ich aus einer 15mm Siebdruckplatte, den Kasten aus 18mm. Da ich nicht weiß, welche Kräfte eine Batterie auf einem holprigen Feldweg auf die Box ausübt, baue ich lieber etwas robuster.
I need a battery box in which I can store a second battery. The battery will be mounted under the rear floor on the left side. There is an extra battery holder made of steel strip. Unfortunately not available at the moment. Therefore I build a new floor with a wooden box underneath. The box should be as big as possible so that I can store other things besides the battery. The bottom is made of a 15mm wood plate, the box of 18mm. Since I don't know what forces a battery will exert on the box on a bumpy dirt road, I prefer to build something more robust.

Als es ans Einbauen in den Wagen ging war es bereits dunkel. Um so größer war der Schreck, als ich feststellte, dass die Box 5mm zu breit geworden ist und nun zwischen Kardanwelle und Längsträger eingeklemmt ist. Also musste ich die Box noch mal nacharbeiten. Jetzt sieht sie von unten nicht mehr ganz so schön aus., von oben sieht man es aber nicht. Naja, es war der erste Entwurf und ich habe einiges in Sachen Holzkistenkonstruktion und -bau gelernt. Bilder vom Einbau gibt es morgen. Heute war es zu dunkel.
When it was time to install it into the car it was already dark. The more frightened I was, when I noticed that the box was 5mm too wide and now it is clamped between the propshaft and the side member. So I had to rework the box again. Now it doesn't look so nice from below, but you can't see it from above. Well, it was the first draft and I learned a lot about wooden box design and construction. Pictures of the installation will be available tomorrow. Today it was too dark.

So sieht das dann eingebaut aus. Der Kasten passt genau neben den Längsträger des Chassis.

Leider war er zu nah an der Kardanwelle. Diese ist zwar in einem nicht drehenden Rohr, welches sich aber  vertikal bewegt. Darum musste ich den Kasten an dieser Seite etwas abhobeln. Leider sieht der Kasten jetzt von unten nicht mehr ganz so schön aus. Das schränkt seine Funktion aber nicht ein.
Unfortunately he was too close to the cardan shaft. This is in a non-rotating tube, but it moves vertically. Therefore I had to plane the box a bit on this side. Unfortunately the box doesn't look so nice from below anymore. But this does not limit its function.

So sieht das von oben aus. Das Brett hätte ich besser von unten gesägt um die Ausbrüche zu vermeiden. Vielleicht werde ich das ganze noch schwarz lackieren, dann sieht es besser aus.

Noch ein Passgenauer Deckel zum Verschließen des Kastens und die Gummimatte drüber. Das ist dann schon komfortabler als der originale Batteriehalter. Hier brauch man nicht unter das Auto um and die Batterie zu kommen.
Another perfectly fitting lid to close the box and the rubber mat over it. This is already more comfortable than the original battery holder. Here you don't need to go under the car to get the battery.

Ich hätte ja noch Spaß an weiteren Stauräumen. Unter dem Auto ist viel Platz. Am einfachsten wäre es über dem Auspuff. Ich muss mal dort die Temperatur messen.
I would still have fun with more storage space. There is a lot of space under the car. The easiest place would be above the exhaust. I have to measure the temperature there.

Wenn ich gerade unter dem Auto liege, der Tank ist immer noch dicht. :-)

80. Tag - Der Winter naht / Winter is coming

Der Winter naht. Mit dem Kühlerschutz beim Auto ist es wie mit der Rettungsweste beim Segeln. Kümmere dich drum, wenn du das erste mal darüber nachdenkst, sonst ist es zu spät. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, dass der Kühlerschlauch immer noch undicht ist.
Winter is coming. With the radiator antifreeze on a car it is like with a life jacket on a sailboat. Take care of it the first time you think about it, otherwise it's too late. I noticed that the radiator hose is still leaking.

Davor habe ich mich aber um das hintere Bodenbrett gekümmert. Die originalen Bretter sind wunderschön. Die kommen nach dem Winter auch wieder rein. Bis das Problem mit dem Magneto gelöst ist, möchte ich aber eine zweite Batterie für die Lichter haben. Die originale Batteriehalterung habe ich noch nicht bekommen können, darum möchte ich einen Kasten unter das Bodenbrett schrauben. Und das möchte ich nicht mit den originalen Bretter machen.
Die 4 Bretter liegen einfach in einem Rahmen und werden mit zwei Leisten links und rechts fixiert. Eine schöne Lösung. Leider ist eine Leiste gebrochen. Die habe ich auch noch nachgebaut, muss mit dem Einbau aber warten bis der Lack getrocknet ist.
But before that I took care of the rear floorboard. The original boards are beautiful. They will come back in after the winter. But until the problem with the magneto is solved, I want to have a second battery for the lights. I haven't been able to get the original battery holder yet, so I want to screw a box under the bottom board. And I don't want to do that with the original boards.
The 4 boards just lie in a frame and are fixed with two strips left and right. A nice solution. Unfortunately one of the strips is broken. I made a copy of it, but I have to wait until the paint is dry.

So sieht das ohne Bodenbretter aus. Die Batterie soll auf die linke Seite zwischen die Kardanwelle und dem Rahmenlängsträger, dort wo man das Laub sieht.

So sieht das jetzt aus. Leider ist die Ästhetik verloren gegangen, dafür kann ich aber jetzt eine Klappe für die Batterie einbauen. Fortsetzung folgt.
