369. Tag - Silikon im Motor / Silicone in engine

Bei der Überholung des Motors wurde viel Silikon verwendet. Nicht nur zur Abdichtung des Motors, sondern auch um die Ölwanne damit aufzufüllen um Ablagerung von Ölschlamm zu vermeiden. Das ist auf den beiden folgenden Bildern zu sehen.
Nach 2644km kann ich aber feststellen, dass es im Motor überhaupt kein Ölschlamm gibt. Warum auch. Der Motor wurde bei der Überholung innen gereinigt. Ich hatte alle 500-800km das Öl gewechselt und außerdem modernes Mehrbereichsöl 15W40 verwendet.
Was wir aber gefunden haben sind Silikonpartikel im Motor. Diese haben sich an den Dichtungen oder der Silikonfüllung abgelöst und stellen eine Potentielle Gefahr für den Motor dar. Auch wenn die Silikonstücke keine Bauteile direkt beschädigen werden, so können sie zum Beispiel die interne Ölleitung verstopfen und so zu einem Lagerschaden führen.
Wir werden nun das Silikon vollständig entfernen und es zur Abdichtung nur sparsam verwenden.
During the overhaul of the engine, a lot of silicone was used. Not only to seal the engine, but also to fill the oil pan with it to prevent oil sludge buildup. This can be seen in the two pictures below.
But after 2644km I can see that there is no oil sludge in the engine at all. Why would there be. The engine was cleaned inside during the overhaul. I had changed the oil every 500-800km and also used modern multigrade 15W40 oil.
But what we have found are silicone particles in the engine. These have come off at the seals or the silicone filling and are a potential hazard to the engine. Even though the silicone pieces will not directly damage any components, they can, for example, clog the internal oil line and cause bearing damage.
We will now remove the silicone completely and use it sparingly for sealing.

Here you can clearly see how the silicone on the oil pan gasket is pressed into the interior of the engine during assembly and can then come loose there.

367. Tag - High Volume Oil Line

Ich möchte einen Blick auf den Getriebedeckel werfen. Hier sind zwei Unterschiede zum Original zu sehen. Der Kontakt des Magnetos ist mir einem hydraulischen Anschluss versehen. Hier war mal eine außenliegende Ölleitung montiert, die die vorderen Lager mit zusätzlichem Öl versorgen sollte. Das vom Schwungrad aufgewirbelte Öl sollte in diesen Anschluss spritzen und über die Leitung nach vorn fließen. Da der Magneto Anschluss höher liegt, als der Trichter der originalen innenliegenden Ölleitung, ist das Gefälle der Leitung größer. Dadurch sollte man größere Steigungen am Berg fahren können, ohne dass die Ölversorgung abbricht. Ich habe keine Erfahrungen mit dieser Konstruktion. Wahrscheinlich funktioniert es.
I would like to take a look at the gearbox cover. Here are two differences from the original. The contact of the magneto has a hydraulic connection. Here was once an external oil line mounted, which should supply the front bearings with additional oil. The oil from the flywheel was supposed to splash into this connection and flow to the front via the line. Since the magneto port is higher than the funnel of the original inboard oil line, the slope of the line is greater. This should allow you to go up larger inclines on a hill without breaking the oil supply. I have no experience with this design. Probably it works.

Dann gibt es noch die High Volume Oil Line. Das Prinzip ist das gleiche, nur dass der Anschluss seitlich im Getriebedeckel montiert wird.
Then there is the High Volume Oil Line. The principle is the same, except that the connection is mounted in the side of the gearbox cover.

Von innen sieht das so aus. Die Konstruktion des Erfinders sieht hier noch einen kleinen Trichter vor, der die Ölmenge noch mal erhöht. In der Version, welche von Snyders Antique Auto Parts verkauft wird fehlt dieser Trichter. Allerdings ist die Ölmenge signifikant höher als bei der innenliegenden originalen Ölleitung.
From the inside it looks like this. The inventor's design includes a small funnel that increases the amount of oil. In the version sold by Snyders Antique Auto Parts this funnel is missing. However, the amount of oil is significantly higher than on the inside original oil line.

Die außenliegende Ölleitung ist entlang der Ölwanne verlegt und wird links neben dem ersten Pleuel an der Ölwanne angeschlossen. 
The external oil line is routed along the oil pan and is connected to the oil pan to the left of the first connecting rod. 

Hier sieht man zum Vergleich den Trichter der innenliegenden originalen Leitung.

364. Tag - Ölwanne richten / Oil Pan Alignment

Die Kurbelwelle hat nur drei Hauptlager. Es gibt aber ein viertes Lager im Getriebe, das in der Flucht der Kurbelwellenhauptlager stehen muss. Die Lagerschalen des 4. Hauptlagers werden von der Ölwanne gehalten. Dazu ist es wichtig, dass die Ölwanne nicht verbogen ist.
Darum werden wir jetzt die Form der Ölwane kontrollieren und falls notwendig später richten. Hierzu gibt es eine eigens gefertigte Richtbank. Die Ölwanne wird auf die Richtbank gelegt und darf dann nicht wackeln. Schaut Euch ddie beiden Videos an und entscheidet selbst ob die Ölwanne gerichtet werden muss.
The crankshaft has only three main bearings. However, there is a fourth bearing in the gearbox that must be in alignment with the crankshaft main bearings. The bearing shells of the 4th main bearing are held by the oil pan. For this purpose, it is important that the oil pan is not bent.
Therefore, we will now check the shape of the oil pan and, if necessary, straighten it later. For this purpose we have a specially made straightening bench. The oil pan is placed on the bench and must not wobble. Take a look at the two videos and decide for yourself whether the oil pan needs to be straightened.

360. Tag - Ölwanne / Oil Pan

Ich reinige erst mal die Ölwanne, damit sie beim Transport nicht das ganze Auto verölt. Auch die Reste der Dichtung und das Silikon müssen entfernt werden.
I first clean the oil pan so that it does not oil the whole car during transport. The remains of the seal and the silicone must also be removed.

Nur das Silikon, mit dem Werner die kritischen Ecken der Wanne aufgefüllt hat entferne ich nicht. Damit soll verhindert werden, dass sich dort Ölschlamm sammelt. Das Silikon hat die 2600km gut überstanden.
The only thing I don't remove is the silicone that Werner used to fill the critical corners of the sump. This is to prevent oil sludge from collecting there. The silicone has survived the 2600km well.

Nachdem das Silikon und die Dichtung entfernt ist, schleife ich noch die Dichtfläche blank. Jetzt sieht man gut die Unebenheiten auf der Dichtfläche.
After the silicone and the seal are removed, I sand the sealing surface. Now you can see the unevenness on the sealing surface.

Jetzt noch ein paar Details der Ölwanne. Ein interessantes Detail ist die Abdeckung mit der rechteckigen Loch über der Ölablassschraube. Im Moment ist mir nicht so richtig klar was sie bewirken soll.

Now a few more details of the oil pan. An interesting detail is the cover with the rectangular hole above the oil drain plug. At the moment I'm not really sure what it's supposed to do.

Nachtrag 05.02.2022: Diese Abdeckung mit dem Schlitz soll nicht verhindern, dass etwas durchfällt, sondern sie soll verhindern, dass hineingelangte Partikel oder Schlamm nicht mehr zurück in den Motorraum gelangt. Es ist also eine einfache Partikelfalle. Leider verhindert sie auch, dass eine Mutter oder Schraube, welche ins Getriebe fällt nicht durch den Ölablass herausfallen kann.

Addendum 05.02.2022: This cover with the slot is not intended to prevent anything from falling through, but to prevent particles or sludge that have gotten into it from getting back into the engine compartment. So it is a simple particle trap. Unfortunately, it also prevents a nut or bolt that falls into the transmission from falling out through the oil drain.

Jetzt noch zwei nicht originale Details.
Die drei Hutmuttern unter der Serviceklappe sind eine Idee von Werner. Darin sollen Partikel gesammelt werden. Das funktioniert sehr gut. Ich habe bei den Ölwechseln schon Metallspäne aber auch Wasser darin gefunden. Leider ist eine Schraube beim Ausbau des Motors abgerissen. Das kann aber schnell repariert werden.
Now two non-original details.

The three cap nuts under the service hatch are an idea of Werner. Particles should be collected in them. This works very well. I have found metal chips but also water in it during oil changes. Unfortunately, a screw tore off when I removed the engine. But that can be repaired quickly.

Vorn links an der Ölwanne ist die zusätzliche externe High Volume Ölversorgungsleitung angeschlossen.
The additional external high volume oil supply line is connected to the front left of the oil pan.

359. Tag - Motor Demontage / Engine disassembly

Zum Transport des Motors werde ich ihn auseinander bauen. ich fange mit dem Krümmer und Vergaser an.
To transport the engine I will disassemble it. i will start with the manifold and carburetor.

Danach wird die Ölwanne entfernt. Da Motor und Getriebe im gleichen Öl laufen, gibt es auch nur eine Ölwanne. Es fällt auf, dass die Schrauben mit nur wenig Drehmoment angeschraubt sind. Vermutlich hat das zusätzliche Silikon auf der Dichtfläche mit der Zeit nachgegeben.
The oil pan is then removed. Since the engine and transmission run in the same oil, there is also only one oil pan. It is noticeable that the screws are screwed on with only little torque. Presumably, the additional silicone on the sealing surface has given way over time.

Mit dem Silikon hat Werner die kritischen Stellen ausgefüllt um zu verhindern, dass sich dort Ölschlamm sammelt. Es ist kein Ölschlamm zu sehen. 
Werner filled the critical areas with silicone to prevent oil sludge from collecting there. There is no oil sludge to be seen. 

Nachdem die Ölwanne entfernt ist kann man das Getriebe abnehmen. Es ist mit nur 4 Schrauben an der Kurbelwelle angeschraubt.
After the oil pan is removed, the gearbox can be taken off. It is bolted to the crankshaft with only 4 screws.

Auf der Rückseite des Getriebes sind die Magnete für den Magneto aufgeschraubt.
The magnets for the magneto are screwed onto the back of the gearbox.

Der Isolierlack des Spulenkranzes weißt einige Beschädigungen auf.
The insulating lacquer of the mag coil has some damage.

Das ist der Trichter, welcher das durch die Schwungscheibe aufgewirbelte Öl einfängt und es nach vorn zu den ersten Lager führt. Das ist die originale Ölleitung im Motor, nicht die zusätzliche, welche außen am Motor angebracht ist.
This is the funnel that catches the oil swirled up by the flywheel and carries it forward to the first bearings. This is the original oil line in the engine, not the additional one attached to the outside of the engine.

Und jetzt kommt die Überraschung: Der Trichter hat nicht nur Öl, sondern auch Isolierlack des Spulenkranz eingefangen. Dieser Lack hat den Trichter verstopft. Ohne der zusätzlichen High Volume Schmierung, hätte die Ölversorgung der vorderen Lager nicht mehr funktioniert. Der sich ablösende Isolierlack ist Grund genug den Spulenring auszutauschen.
And now comes the surprise: The funnel has caught not only oil, but also insulating varnish of the mag coil. This varnish has clogged the funnel. Without the additional high-volume lubrication, the oil supply to the front bearings would no longer have worked. The peeling insulating lacquer is reason enough to replace the magneto coil.

Jetzt suche ich das beschädigte Lager von dem das Stück Weißmetall stammt, welches ich beim Ölwechsel gefunden habe. Die Pleuellager sehen alle gut aus.
Now I'm looking for the damaged bearing that the piece of white metal I found during the oil change came from. The connecting rod bearings all look good.

Nur beim ersten Pleuellager fehlt links ein kleines Stück.
Only the first connecting rod bearing is missing a small piece on the left.

Hier sieht man das zweite Hauptlager der Kurbellwelle. Dieses befindet sich zwischen dem zweiten und dritten Zylinder. Hier bin ich mit nicht sicher, ob in dem Spalt links und rechts nicht Weißmetall des Lagers sein sollte. Vielleicht stammen die Bruchstücke von diesem Lager.
Here you can see the second main bearing of the crankshaft. This is located between the second and third cylinder. Here I'm not sure if there shouldn't be white metal of the bearing in the gap left and right. Maybe the broken pieces are from this bearing.

Der neue Motorständer ist schon sehr nützlich. Ich kann damit den Motor aus der Garage rollen.
The new engine stand is already very useful. I can roll the engine out of the garage with it.

357. Tag - Motorständer / Motor Stand

Heute habe ich den Motorständer zum Auto gebracht um zu schauen, ob die Grundkonstruktion passt. Die beiden werden noch um ein Vierkantrohr ergänzt, damit man den Motor mit Schrauben an dem Ständer befestigen kann. Dann passt auch die Höhe. Die Ölablassschraube hat dann noch 2cm Luft zum Boden. Der maximale Höhe des Motors auf dem Ständer beträgt 68cm. Damit kann ich ihn gut in das Auto einladen.
Today I took the engine stand to the car to see if the basic design would fit. A square tube will be added to them so that the engine can be attached to the stand with screws. Then also the height fits. The oil drain plug has then still 2cm air to the ground. The maximum height of the engine on the stand is 68cm. So I can load it well into the car.

Vorn werde ich den Motor nicht am Lager der Anlasserkurbel abstützen, sondern an der kleinen Wanne. Das Loch darin ist sehr nützlich um den Motor mit einer Schraube am Ständer zu fixieren. Diese Lösung ist viel einfacher als eine Abstützung am Lager der Anlasserkurbel.
At the front I will not support the engine at the bearing of the starter crank, but at the small tub. The hole in it is very useful to fix the engine to the stand with a screw. This solution is much easier than supporting it at the bearing of the starter crank.

Ich konnte auch die Rollen testen. Jede der Rollen kann 80kg tragen. In der Summe also 320kg. Ich kenne das Gewicht des Motors nicht. Ich kann aber den Ständer mit dem Motor gut bewegen. Die Rollen sind wohl ausreichend dimensioniert.
I was also able to test the rollers. Each of the rollers can carry 80kg. So in total 320kg. I do not know the weight of the motor. But I can move the stand well with the motor. The rollers are probably sufficiently dimensioned.

Zurück von der Garage schweiße ich noch die letzten Teile an. Die Stützen  habe ich noch mit seitlichen Platten ergänzt, die verhindern sollen, dass die seitlichen Lager des Motors vom Ständer rutschen.
Die drei Löcher für die Schrauben werde ich bohren, wenn der Motor auf dem Ständer liegt. Dann muss der Ständer nur noch lackiert werden. Ich denke, dass der Ständer sehr nützlich in der Zukunft wird. Nicht nur für en Transport, sondern auch um meinen Ersatzmotor zu lagern.
Back from the garage I weld the last parts. I added side plates to the supports to prevent the side bearings of the engine from slipping off the stand. 
I will drill the three holes for the screws when the engine is on the stand. Then the stand just needs to be painted. I think the stand will be very useful in the future. Not only for transport, but also to store my spare engine.

Nachtrag: Die Löcher für die Schrauben sind gebohrt. Ich musst auch noch die Auflage vorn verlängern. Die Ölwanne liegt vorn aber nicht genau in der Mitte des Ständers auf. Entweder sind die Halter des Motors nicht symmetrisch oder der Ständer ist nicht genau rechtwinklig.
Addendum: The holes for the screws are drilled. I also had to extend the support in front. But the oil pan does not rest exactly in the middle of the stand at the front. Either the engine mounts are not symmetrical or the stand is not exactly square.
