Schnell noch zur Tankstelle um den Verbrauch der gestrigen Fahrt zu ermitteln: 22l/100km. Schon realistischer, aber auch noch zu viel für eine größtenteils Landstraßenfahrt. Die Gemischeinstellung kann es nicht sein. Sie wurde ausgiebig getestet.
Schnell noch alle Dinge für die Fahrt einladen und das Auto aufräumen, dann kann es losgehen.
Vergaser füllen, Zündung auf Batterie und spät stellen und kurbeln.
Aber was ist das? Ein süßlicher Geruch, dann weißer Qualm aus dem Motorraum!
Ich öffne die Motorhaube und - KABELBRAND!!!
Ich renne auf die Beifahrerseite um die Zündung abzustellen und sehe auch dort weißen Qualm aus dem Zündungsschalter aufsteigen. Oh mein Gott! Zündung aus, Werkzeugkoffer auf, Gabelschlüssel greifen und Batterie abgeklemmen.
Erst mal durchatmen und Schadensanalyse.
Die Isolierung des Plus-Kabels von der Batterie zum Batterie Terminal an der Firewall ist teilweise komplett weggebrannt. Also raus mit dem Kabel.
A trip to Merzig town with a friend is planned for today.

I open the hood and - WIRE!!!
I run to the passenger side to turn off the ignition and see white smoke rising from the ignition switch. Oh my God! Ignition off, toolbox open, grab the wrench and disconnect the battery.
Take a deep breath and do damage analysis.
The insulation on the positive wire from the battery to the battery terminal on the firewall is partially and completely burned away. So get the cable out.
Der Fehler ist nach öffnen des Zündungsschalters auch schnell gefunden. Das Kabel von der Batterie hatte vermutlich wegen zu alter Isolierung Massenschluss.
The fault can also be found quickly after opening the ignition switch. The cable from the battery probably had a short circuit because of too old insulation.
Also Coil Box ausbauen und alles neu verkabeln.
So remove the coil box and rewire everything.
Jetzt sind alle Kabel erneuert (um die Holzteile kümmere ich mich später). Ich prüfe noch die Funktion des Schalters und stelle fest, dass der Hebelkontakt (Inner Lever) beschädigt ist. Der halbrunde Metallkontakt ist aus dem Kunstoffhalter herausgebrochen. Der Kontakt ist lose und verhakt sich im Gehäuse, statt sich unter die Kontakte zu schieben. Ich klebe den Kontakt erst mal, bis ein Ersatz beschafft ist. Allerdings dauert es 24h bis der Klebstoff aushärtet. So lange muss ein schickes gelb-grünes Provisorium seinen Dienst tun.
Ach ja, es gibt jetzt eine neuzeitliche Sicherung im Wagen.
Now all cables are renewed (I will take care of the wooden parts later). I check the function of the switch and find out that the Inner Lever is damaged. The semicircular metal contact is broken out of the plastic holder. The contact is loose and gets stuck in the housing instead of sliding under the contacts. I glue the contact until a replacement is available. But it takes 24h until the glue hardens. This is how long a nice yellow-green temporary has to work.
Oh yes, there is now a modern fuse in the car.
Die Reparatur hat jetzt fast 3 Stunden gedauert. Für die Fahrt nach Merzig ist es zu spät. Wir wollen eine kleinere Runde fahren. Da wir die Reparatur auf der Straße durchführten, haben wir jetzt viele Schaulustige, die erwartungsvoll darauf warten, dass wir losfahren. Der Motor springt schon beim ersten Versuch an. Wir fahren ein paar Meter, aber der Wagen eiert richtig heftig. Markus steigt aus und sucht die Ursache, während ich ein paar Meter vor und zurück fahre.
Aber diese Geschichte möchte ich Euch morgen erzählen.
Aber die Geschichte hat ein Happy End und darum können wir den Tag dann im Nauwieser Viertel abschließen.
The repair has now taken almost 3 hours. It is too late for the drive to Merzig. We want to go for a shorter drive. Since we did the repair on the road, we now have many onlookers waiting expectantly for us to leave. The engine starts already at the first attempt. We drive a few metres, but the car is really wobbly. Markus gets out and looks for the cause while I drive a few meters back and forth.
But I want to tell you this story tomorrow.
But the story has a happy end and so we can finish the day in the Nauwieser Viertel.
