Braucht man ein Ersatzrad, vielleicht eines mit Wechselfelgen oder könnte man auch einfach einen Schlauch und Reifen auf der Straße wechseln?

Do you need a spare wheel, maybe one with changeable rims or could you just change a tube and tyres on the road?

Das will ich jetzt mal ausprobieren.

Der neue Reifen ist angekommen. Ich habe mal vorsorglich gleich 3 Schläuche und Montiereisen mitbestellt.

Ein Tip von einem Profi: Panzertape statt Felgenband. Naja, die Felge ist ja innen ganz glatt und die Felgenbänder kosten ca. 40€ das Stück. 

Ein anderer Tip von einem anderen Profi: Zugeschnittener Schlauch als Felgenband verwenden. Habe ihn vor ein paar Tagen weggeworfen. :-( 

Auf der Suche nach Talkum reagiert der Reifendienst mit völligem Unverständnis. Er würde Fett nehmen. Jetzt reagiere ich mit völligen Unverständnis: "Für den Schlauch?" Der Reifendienst: "Nein für den Reifen. Für den Schlauch nehmen wir Silikonspray."

OK, Silikonspray bekommt man in jedem Baumarkt. Talkum wahrscheinlich nur noch im Sportfachhandel.

A tip from a professional: Use a tape instead of tire flap. Well, the rim is very smooth inside and the tire flap costs about 40€ per piece. 

Another tip from another pro: Use a cutted tube as tire flap. I threw it away a few days ago. :-( 

In search of talcum powder the tyre service reacts with complete incomprehension. He would use grease. Now I react with complete incomprehension: "For the tube?" The tyre service: "No for the tyre. For the inner tube, we'll use silicon spray."

OK, you can get a can of silicon spray at any hardware store. Talcum powder is probably at sporting goods stores now.

Das Rad stecke ich lose auf die Achse und montiere den ersten Wulst des Reifens. Dann vorsichtig den Schlauch einlegen und...

... fahre mit dem Rad zur Tankstelle, um den Schlauch leicht aufzupumpen.

Dann zurück ans Auto und den Reifen vollständig zu montieren. Ganz vorsichtig um den Schlauch nicht zu klemmen.

...ride the wheel to the gas station to inflate the inner tube. Not too much.

Then back to the car and mount the tire completely. Very carefully not to jam the inner tube.

Wieder zurück zur Tankstelle und vollständig aufpumpen. Aber mit welchem Druck. Auf dem Reifen fehlt die übliche Angabe. Ich meine mich zu erinnern, 3,5 bis 5 bar. Eine kurze Internetrecherche wird es klären. Hmm? Dachte ich zumindest. Leider keine vernünftige Antwort gefunden. Dafür weiß ich jetzt alles über die Historie der Reifenentwicklung von ganz vom Anfang an und alles über Fahrradreifen.

Also mal schauen was die Tankstellen Luftpumpe so kann: 4 bar sind im vierten Anlauf erreicht. 4,5 bar ist das Maximum.

Noch fahre ich aber nicht. Ich möchte morgen erst noch Rücksprache mit den Profis halten. Ich möchte wissen welcher Druck notwendig ist und ob ich alles richtig gemacht habe.

Jetzt aber zurück zu der Frage ganz am Anfang: 

Mit zwei Montiereisen, einer Pumpe und etwas Übung kann man einen Reifen oder Schlauch vielleicht in 20 Minuten auf der Straße wechseln. Eigentlich ist kein Ersatzrad notwendig.

Hier noch ein kleines Detail: Das Montiereisen darf keine scharfe Kanten haben. Ein 500mm langes Montiereisen reicht völlig aus.

But now back to the question at the very beginning: 

With two tire irons, a pump and some practice, you can change a tyre or inner tube in maybe 20 minutes on the road. Actually no spare wheel is necessary.

Here is a small detail: The tyre lever must not have any sharp edges. A 500mm long tyre lever is completely sufficient.

Nachtrag 1: Nach Rücksprache mit zwei Experten soll der Luftdruck mindestens 3bar (Münchner Oldtimer Reifen) bis 4,5 bar (Werner Straube) betragen. Sehr wichtig ist die Kontrolle, dass der Wulst korrekt in das umgebörtelte Felgenhorn eingehakt ist.

Addendum 1: After consultation with two experts, the air pressure should be at least 3 bar (Münchner Oldtimer Reifen MOR) to 4.5 bar (Werner Straube). It is very important to check that the bead is correctly hooked into the rim flange.

Nachtrag 2: Es gibt doch eine Angabe des Maximaldruckes von 4,5 bar auf dem Reifen. Dieser ist aber nur auf einer Seite in sehr kleiner Schrift zu finden.

Addendum 2: There is an indication of the maximum pressure of 4.5 bar on the tyre. But this can only be found on one side in very small letters.
