307. Tag - Differential Ölcheck / Differential Oil Check

Nachdem ich den Getriebeausgang von außen abgedichtet habe und dort kaum noch Öl herausläuft, frage ich mich was mit dem Öl passiert, wenn es das Getriebe verläßt. Entweder ist der Ölstand im Kugelgehäuse des Kardans dann so hoch, dass kein weiteres öl mehr aus dem Getriebe herauslaufen kann oder es sucht sich seinen Weg durch das Kardanrohr ins Differential. Am einfachsten ist es mal den Ölstand im Differential zu kontrollieren. Das ist ganz einfach. Die Schraube rechts am Differential herausdrehen und nachschauen.
After I sealed the gearbox outlet from the outside and hardly any oil runs out there, I wonder what happens to the oil when it leaves the gearbox. Either the oil level in the ball housing of the cardan is then so high that no more oil can run out of the gearbox or it seeks its way through the cardan tube into the differential. The easiest way is to check the oil level in the differential. This is very simple. Unscrew the screw on the right side of the differential and check.

Der Ölstand ist zu hoch. Normalerweise füllt man ein Differential immer bis an den Rand der Einfüllöffnung. Beim Model T soll der Ölstand 20mm darunter liegen. Wenn Öl beim Öffnen herausläuft ist der Füllstand eindeutig zu viel. Das Öl kann eigentlich nur über das Kardanrohr in das Differential gelaufen sein. Damit ist es nicht nur zu viel Öl, sondern auch zu dünn. Das Öl im Differential ist wesentlich dickflüssiger als das Motoröl.
The oil level is too high. Normally, you always fill a differential to the edge of the filler hole. On the Model T, the oil level should be 20mm below that. If oil runs out when you open it, the level is clearly too much. The oil can actually only have run into the differential through the gimbal tube. Thus, it is not only too much oil, but also too thin. The oil in the differential is much thicker than the engine oil.

Das Öl im Differential enthält auffällig viel Buntmetallpartikel. Hier ist ein Ölwechsel dringend notwendig. Ich muss nur noch passendes Öl besorgen.
The oil in the differential contains a noticeable amount of non-ferrous metal particles. An oil change is urgently needed here. I just have to get suitable oil.

Ich verschließe das Differential wieder und schaue mir die Bremstrommeln an. Im schlimmsten Fall würde das Öl vom Differential über die Hinterachse in die Bremstrommeln der Feststellbremse laufen. Doch hier ist alles in Ordnung. 
I close the differential again and look at the brake drums. In the worst case, the oil would run from the differential over the rear axle into the brake drums of the parking brake. But here, everything is in order. 

Lediglich auf der rechten Seite habe ich wohl zu viel Fett in das Radlager gemacht. Etwas Fett hat sich herausgedrückt. Aber es ist kein Öl in der Bremstrommel.
Only on the right side I probably put too much grease in the wheel bearing. Some grease has squeezed out. But there is no oil in the brake drum.

Ich habe noch etwas Zeit mein Kamerastativ aus den 60er zu reparieren. Ein Bein hat sich gelöst. Beim Demontieren fällt die lockere Schraube auf den Boden. Ich kann sie nicht mehr finden. Vielleicht taucht sie wieder auf oder ich muss eine Ersatzschraube besorgen.
I still have some time to repair my camera tripod from the 60s. One of the legs has come loose. While disassembling it, the loose screw falls to the floor. I can't find it anymore. Maybe it will turn up again or I will have to get a replacement screw.

306. Tag - Die Saison ist eröffnet / The season is open

Bestes Wetter am Sonntag. Es sieht so aus, als würde der Sommer beginnen. Natürlich begegne ich vielen Oldtimer. Es waren ca. 20 Stück denen ich heute begegnet bin. Ich war aber auch 100km unterwegs.
Zuerst dachte ich, dass mir da ein alter Ford entgegen kommt, es war aber nur mein Spiegelbild. :-)
Best weather on Sunday. It looks like summer is about to begin. Of course I meet many vintage cars. There were about 20 of them that I met today. But I was also 100km on the road.

At first I thought that there was an old Ford coming towards me, but it was only my reflection. :-)

Doch 2km später kam mir ein Ford Hot Rod entgegen. Den habe ich hier im Revier noch nie gesehen.
But one mile later I was met by a Ford Hot Rod. I have never seen it here in the area.

Es folgten viele weitere schöne Autos. Ein paar habe ich mit der Kamera einfangen können, bevor der Akku all war.

Ein besonders schöner Mercedes 110 aus den frühen 60er Jahren bin ich noch begegnet.

305. Tag - Die dunkle Seite der Macht / The dark side of force

Es gibt auf Deutschlands Straßen Dinge die scheinbar aus Star Wars entsprungen sind. Dinge die mehr dem Design eines Imperialen Sternzerstörers gleichen, als einem Auto oder was sonst so auf Straßen zu finden ist. Doch die Macht ist mit mir, also ich meine das Model T ist mit mir und so stelle ich mich der dunklen Seite und parke das Model T auf den Parkplatz direkt vor das Fremde. 
There are things on Germany's streets that seem to have come out of Star Wars. Things that look more like the design of an Imperial Star Destroyer than a car or what else can be found on the streets. But the Force is with me, so I mean the Model T is with me and so I face the dark side and park the Model T on the parking lot directly in front of the stranger. 

Es schaut durch ein böses Auge den T an, der sich jetzt schützend vor die anderen Autos stellt. So stehen sie nun und starren sich gegenseitig an. Wer zuerst blinzelt hat verloren. Das Model T ist aber nicht gekommen um zu verlieren. So stehen sich nun 105 Jahre technische Entwicklung Auge in Auge gegenüber, symbolisieren beide Seiten der Macht, nur diesmal ist der Schwarze der Gute und der weiße das Böse. 
Die Passanten und Radfahren sind amüsiert und lachen.

So now 105 years of technical development stand face to face, symbolizing both sides of power, only this time the black is the good guy and the white is the bad guy.

PS: Das Model T ist übrigens seid 104 Jahre quasi immun gegen Radarfallen. Konstruktionsbedingt.

304. Tag - Scheunenfund / Barn Find

 

Heute hatte ich einen echten Scheunenfund. Ich habe in einer Scheune den Spaß am Citroen Traction wieder gefunden. Ich weiß schon gar nicht mehr, wann ich ihn da rein gestellt habe. ich glaube es war vor vier Jahren. Die Staubschicht deutet zumindest darauf hin. Es hat ungefähr eine Stunde gedauert, bis er lief. Ursache war eine mehrfach von einem Tier durchgebissene Benzinleitung, die erst mal gefunden und dann repariert werden musste. Dann lief der Motor aber wieder wie früher. Im Vergleich zum Model T ist der 2 Liter 4-Zylinder Traction Motor mit 60 PS wirklich sehr kultiviert.
Today I had a real barn find. I found the fun of the Citroen Traction again in a barn. I don't even remember when I put it in there, I think it was four years ago. At least the layer of dust indicates that. It took about an hour to get it running. The cause was a fuel line that had been bitten through several times by an animal, which first had to be found and then repaired. But then the engine ran like before. Compared to the Model T, the 2 liter 4-cylinder Traction engine with 60 hp is really very refined.

Erst als der Dreck runter gewaschen ist sieht man, dass der Wagen bevor er in die Scheune kam komplett neu lackiert wurde.

Es ist noch ein wenig Arbeit am wagen zu erledigen. 3 Scheiben müssen noch montiert werden, den Türen fehlen noch die Innenverkleidungen, der Dachhimmel muss montiert werden und die Kupplung muss ausgetauscht werden. Im Juli soll er fertig sein.

Aber fahren kann er jetzt schon.
There is still a little work to be done on the car. 3 windows still need to be installed, the doors are still missing the interior trim, the headliner needs to be installed and the clutch needs to be replaced. It should be ready in July.

Worin unterscheidet sich der Traction zum Model T?
Der Traction war im Jahr seiner Erstauslieferung 1934 seiner Zeit weit voraus. Eine selbsttragende Karosserie mit sehr niedrigem Schwerpunkt und Frontantrieb. Das Getriebe befindet sich vor dem Motor, womit der Wagen eine sehr gute Gewichtsverteilung hat auf die beiden Achsen hat. All das gibt dem Wagen unglaubliche Vorteile in Extremsituationen.  Es muss so um 2002 oder 2003 gewesen sein, als ich mit dem Traction auf einem Fahrsicherheitstraining war. Dort hat er die modernen Autos richtig alt aussehen lassen. Aber schaut selbst:

Im Normalen Verkehr unterscheidet sich der Traction zum Model T aber auch in vielen Dingen. Zuerst ist mir wieder das riesengroße Lenkrad des Citroens aufgefallen. Das Model T Lenkrad ist ungewöhnlich klein für einen Oldtimer. Vielleicht hat das mit dem Planetengetriebe beim Ford zu tun.
Dann hat der Traction mit seinem extrem langem Radstand und dem Frontantrieb einen unglaublich großen Wendekreis. Das gibt es beim T auch nicht.
Der Traction ist härter gefedert als die hochbeinige Tin Lizzy. Überhaupt ist das Model T sehr komfortabel gefedert. Da können auch keine Autos aus 2021 mithalten. Nur manchmal schlägt das Fahrwerk durch, dann katapultiert es den Fahrer gern mal in die Höhe. 

Aber eines haben beide Autos gemeinsam: Sie sind unglaublich coole Autos.

How does the Traction differ from the Model T?

In 1934, the year of its first delivery, the Traction was far ahead of its time. A self-supporting body with a very low center of gravity and front-wheel drive. The transmission is located in front of the engine, which gives the car a very good weight distribution on the two axles. All this gives the car incredible advantages in extreme situations.  It must have been around 2002 or 2003 when I was on a driving safety training with the Traction. There it made the modern cars look really old. But see for yourself:

In normal traffic the Traction differs from the Model T in many things. First I noticed the huge steering wheel of the Citroen. The Model T steering wheel is unusually small for a vintage car. Maybe that has something to do with the planetary gearbox on the Ford.

Then the Traction with its extremely long wheelbase and front-wheel drive has an incredibly large turning circle. The T doesn't have that either.

The Traction has a harder suspension than the long-legged Tin Lizzy. In general, the Model T has very comfortable suspension. Even cars from 2021 can't keep up. Only sometimes does the suspension snap, and then it likes to catapult the driver into the air. 

But both cars have one thing in common: They are incredibly cool cars.

303. Tag - Beinahe Unfall / Near accident

Heute habe ich kein Photo. Nur einen großen Schrecken.
Ich fahre langsam an einer Parkhaus Ausfahrt vorbei. Ein Auto kommt aus dem Parkhaus links heraus und reagiert überhaupt nicht, so als würde es mich nicht sehen. Ich bin zum Bremsen zu spät und um aus der Gefahrenzone wegzufahren zu langsam.  Der Wagen kommt meinem linken hinteren Kotflügel bis auf 10cm nahe, dann muss der Fahrer doch gemerkt haben, dass da was ist, wo er eigentlich hinfahren will.
Aus der Model T Perspektive ist so eine Situation übrigens irgendwie surreal. Ich habe die Situation aus dem Augenwinkel von der hohen Sitzposition des Ts wahrgenommen. Das ist eine Perspektive irgendwie wie in einem Film.
Today I have no photo. Only a big fright.
I drive slowly past a parking garage exit. A car comes out of the parking garage on the left and doesn't react at all, as if it doesn't see me. I am too late to brake and too slow to drive away from the danger zone.  The car comes to within 10cm of my left rear fender, at which point the driver must have realized that there is something where he actually wants to go.
By the way, from the Model T perspective such a situation is somehow surreal. I perceived the situation out of the corner of my eye from the high seating position of the T. That's a perspective somehow like in a movie.

Aber es gibt auch was nettes zu berichten. Der Lack auf dem Kühlwasserrohr links unter dem Motor hat bisher gut gehalten. Es gibt keine Abplatzungen wie ich sie bereits am Kühler gefunden habe.
But there is also something nice to report. The paint on the coolant pipe on the left under the engine has held up well so far. There are no flakes like I already found on the radiator.

302. Tag - Sitin

Kann ein Schild wie dieses Leute davon abhalten ihre Kinder in fremde Autos zu sitzen oder diese einfach auf dem Auto rumklettern zu lassen? Mein Model T hatte mal so ein Schild an der Windschutzscheibe. Ich habe es entfernt, da ich mir nicht vorstellen konnte, dass so ein Hinweis notwendig wäre. 
Was heute passiert ist war aber die Krönung solcher Vorfälle. 
Eine Mutter stellt ihr Kind auf das Trittbrett um ein Photo zu machen. Dann fängt das Kind an auf den Kotflügel zu klettern und sitzt kurze Zeit später auf der Motorhaube. Die Mutter schaut zu und macht einfach nichts. Spinnen die denn?

Can a sign like this stop people from sitting their kids in other people's cars or just letting them climb on top of the car? My Model T once had a sign like this on the windshield. I removed it because I couldn't imagine that such a notice would be necessary.
But what happened today was the culmination of such incidents.
A mother puts her child on the running board to take a photo. Then the child starts to climb on the fender and a short time later sits on the hood. The mother watches and does nothing. Are they crazy?

301. Tag - Das ist eine Kutsche Mama / This is a carriage mom

 

Mama zu Kind: "Schau mal ein schönes altes Auto!"

Sonst ist nicht viel heute passiert. Außer wieder viele Menschen einen kurzen Moment lang glücklich gemacht, wie zum Beispiel die beiden Radfahrer in dem Video.

Not much else happened today. Except again made many people happy for a brief moment, like the two cyclists in the video.

300. Tag - Technikmuseum Sinsheim

Wir haben heute den Feiertag genutzt, ein Museum zu besuchen, an dem ich schon mein ganzes Leben lang immer nur vorbei gefahren bin. Das Technikmuseum in Sinsheim. Hier gibt es mehr als 3.000 Exponate auf einer Fläche von über 50.000 m². Es hat jeden Tag geöffnet und über 1.000.000 Besucher im Jahr. Seine Schwerpunkte sind Fahrzeuge: Autos, Motorräder, Flugzeuge, Lokomotiven und Fahrräder.
Schon auf dem Parkplatz stehen Fahrzeuge von Besuchern. Sogar gleich zwei Model-Ts.
Ich zeige hier ein paar Bilder, die aber natürlich nur eine kleine Auswahl sind.

Today we took advantage of the holiday to visit a museum that I've been driving past all my life. The technology museum in Sinsheim. Here there are more than 3,000 exhibits on an area of over 50,000 m². It is open every day and has over 1,000,000 visitors a year. Its main focus is vehicles: cars, motorcycles, airplanes, locomotives and bicycles.

Already in the parking lot there are vehicles of visitors. Even two Model-Ts at once.
