164. Tag - Ölverlust / Oil Leakage

Die Stelle der größten Ölverlustes ist die Kardanwelle am Getriebeausgang. Der Motor verliert aber auch an der Schnittstelle der Ölwanne, Motorblockes und Getriebeglocke etwas Öl. Ich werde jetzt den Motor komplett säubern und mir überlegen wie ich ein Blechwanne gestalten kann, die dann alles auffangen wird. Ich habe nämlich keine Lust mehr nach jeder Fahrt unter das Auto zu klettern und das Öl abzuwischen um Ölflecken auf der Straße zu vermeiden.

The point of greatest oil loss is the propshaft at the gearbox. But the engine also loses some oil at the interface of the oil pan, engine block and transmission bell housing. I will now clean the engine completely and figure out how to design a sheet metal pan that will then catch everything. I no longer want to climb under the car after every ride and wipe off the oil to avoid oil stains on the road.

 

163. Tag - Etwas zuviel Aufmerksamkeit / A little too much attention

 

Vielleicht sind manche Menschen nicht bereit einem Model T in freier Wildbahn zu begegnen. Heute habe ich etwas verrücktes erlebt.
An einer Ampel wollte ich rechts abbiegen und hielt an der Kreuzung an um den entgegenkommenden Verkehr, den Linksabbieger, die Vorfahrt zu geben. Das zweite Auto meinte dann einfach anhalten zu müssen um mich freundlicherweise einfahren zu lassen. Natürlich ist niemand darauf vorbereitet, dass das vor einem fahrende Auto beim Abbiegen an der Ampel einfach auf der Kreuzung stoppt. Für das nachfolgende Auto war es schon knapp, für das vierte Auto hat es nicht mehr gereicht und fuhr auf das dritte Auto auf.
Maybe some people are not ready to meet a Model T in the wild. Today I experienced something crazy.
At a traffic light I wanted to turn right and stopped at the intersection to give the oncoming traffic, the left turners, the right of way. The second car then thought it simply had to stop to kindly let me enter. Of course, no one is prepared for the car in front of you to simply stop at the intersection when turning at the light. For the following car it was already close, for the fourth car it was not enough and drove on the third car. 

162. Tag - Ein ganz normaler Tankstellenbesuch / A normal visit to a gas station

Ein ganz normaler Besuch der Tankstelle. Das meiste bekomme ich gar nicht mit, wenn ich in die Tanköffnung schaue, damit nichts überläuft. Aber der Wagen sieht alles.
A completely normal visit to the gas station. I don't even notice most of it when I look into the tank opening so that nothing overflows. But the car sees everything.

161. Tag - Supermarkt / Supermarket

Beim Besuch des Supermarktes parkte ich heute an der hintersten Ecke des Parkplatzes. Dort war ich näher an dem Automaten, wo man die leeren Getränkeflasche zurückgeben kann. Trotzdem sind die Leute noch dorthin gelaufen um sich den Wagen anzuschauen.

Interessant ist aber der Hintergrund. Selbst für mein Heimatdorf ist ein Hinterhof mit Gänsen etwas ungewöhnlich.
When I visited the supermarket today, I parked at the far corner of the parking lot. There I was closer to the machine where you can return the empty drink bottle. Nevertheless, people still walked there to look at the car.
But the background is interesting. Even for my home village, a backyard with geese is somewhat unusual.

160. Tag - Cowl lamp vs. bright LED light

 

Das Model T bestimmt etwas meinen Tagesablauf. Heute bin ich früher nach Hause gefahren, als ich es eigentlich wollte, um Batteriestrom zu sparen. OK eigentlich ist nicht das Model T, sondern der immer noch nicht funktionierende Magneto dran schuld. Trotzdem war ich nicht früh genug um nicht in die Dämmerung zu kommen.
Die LED Tageslichter der modernen Autos haben die Wahrnehmung der Verkehrsteilnehmer geändert. Obwohl es noch hell genug ist, signalisieren entgegenkommende Autos mit der Lichthupe, dass man noch kein Licht eingeschaltet hat. Irgendwie habe ich auch den Eindruck, dass die Welt dunkler wirkt, wenn man von dem extrem hellen LED Licht der Autos geblendet wird. Sobald keine Autos mehr entgegen kommen wird es wieder heller.
Heute habe ich ein Test gemacht und ausprobiert, ob das Pedroleum Stadtlicht des Model Ts den LED Lichtern etwas entgegensetzen kann.
Ja es funktioniert. Obwohl ich die letzten Kilometer schon in die Dämmerung gefahren bin, hat niemand die Lichthupe betätigt. :-)

The Model T somewhat determines my daily routine. Today I drove home earlier than I wanted to in order to save battery power. OK actually not the Model T, but the still not working magneto is to blame. Still, I wasn't early enough to avoid getting into the twilight.

The LED daylights of modern cars have changed the perception of road users. Even though it's still bright enough, oncoming cars signal with their flashers that you don't have your lights on yet. Somehow I also have the impression that the world seems darker when you are blinded by the extremely bright LED light of the cars. As soon as there are no more cars coming towards you, it gets brighter again.

Today I did a test and tried if the sowl lamp of the Model Ts can counter the LED lights.

Yes it works. Although I drove the last kilometers already into the twilight, nobody pressed the light flasher. :-)

159. Tag - Grammophon in Model T

Laurel und Hardy nutzten ein Grammophon m Model T um während der Fahrt Musik zu hören. Im Film "Busy Bodies" (1933) hat das wunderbar funktioniert. Kann das aber auch in Wirklichkeit funktionieren?
Lasst es uns ausprobieren.
Laurel and Hardy used a gramophone m Model T to listen to music while driving. In the movie "Busy Bodies" (1933) this worked wonderfully. But can it also work in reality?
Let's try it out.

Zuerst wird ausprobiert, ob ein Grammophon im Motorraum oder in der Nähe montiert werden kann. Ich stelle das Grammophon auf den vorderen Kotflügel und beobachte starke Vibrationen. Das Grammophon droht herunterzufallen. Bei solch starken Vibrationen kann das Grammophon nie funktionieren. 

The first step is to try out whether a gramophone can be mounted in the engine compartment or nearby. I place the gramophone on the front fender and observe strong vibrations. The gramophone threatens to fall off. With such strong vibrations, the gramophone can never work.

Vielleicht funktioniert es aber auf dem Rücksitz.
But maybe it will work in the back seat.

Das Grammophon funktioniert problemlos, wenn der Wagen Steht und im Leerlauf läuft. Es ist mit einer mittellauten Nadel auch gut zu hören.
The gramophone works fine when the car is standing and idling. It is also easy to hear with a medium loud needle.

Aber kann das auch beim Fahren funktionieren? Zum Teil funktioniert es tatsächlich. Wenn der Motor nicht unter Last läuft oder die Straße nicht zu uneben ist, kann man tatsächlich mit einem Grammophon Musik im Model T hören. Sobald man aber beschleunigt und die Vibrationen stärker werden, springt die Nadel auf der Schallplatte. Besonders schlimm ist es, wenn das Grammophone etwas schief steht, wie zum Beispiel an einer Steigung.

But can this also work when driving? It actually works to some extent. If the engine isn't running under load or the road isn't too rough, you can actually listen to music in the Model T with a gramophone. But as soon as you accelerate and the vibrations get stronger, the needle on the record jumps. It's especially bad when the gramophone is a bit crooked, like on an incline.

Zusammenfassung des Tests: Ein Grammophon ist laut genug um im Model T Musik zu hören. Bei vorsichtiger Fahrt funktioniert ein Grammophon auf dem Rücksitz. Allerdings gibt es viele Fahrsituationen, in denen die Nadel auf der Schallplatte hüpft und man muss nach jeder Schallplatte die Nadel wechseln und die Feder des Grammophons wieder aufziehen. 
Test summary: A gramophone is loud enough to listen to music in the Model T. With careful driving, a gramophone in the back seat works. However, there are many driving situations where the needle bounces on the record and you have to change the needle and rewind the spring of the gramophone after each record.

Vielleicht nehme ich das Grammophone bei dem nächsten Oldtimer Treffen mit. Im Alltag kommt aber wieder der Bluetooth Lautsprecher zum Einsatz.
Maybe I'll take the gramophone with me at the next vintage car meeting. In everyday life, however, the Bluetooth speaker is used again.

Wie kann man ein Grammophone lauter machen, so dass es auch im Auto gehört werden kann?

157. Tag - Bluetooth vs. Schellack/Shellac

Für Silvester habe ich ein ganz besonderen Blog. Es geht um die Musik beim Autofahren. Darauf wollte und konnte ich nicht verzichten und habe immer einen Bluetooth Lautsprechern auf dem Sitz liegen und höre ganz stilsicher Musik aus den 10er und 20er Jahren.
Allerdings dauert es länger den Bluetooth Lautsprecher mit dem Smartphone zu verbinden, als das Model-T zu starten. Dafür entschädigt die moderne Technik dann mit einer Musikauswahl, die genau für das Model-T passen. Das ganze hört sich dann so an.
For New Year's Eve I have a very special blog. It's about the music while driving. I did not want to and could not do without it and always have a Bluetooth speaker on the seat and listen quite stylish music from the 10s and 20s.
However, it takes longer to connect the Bluetooth speaker to the smartphone than it does to start the  Model-T. The modern technology then compensates for this with a music selection that fits the Model-T exactly. The whole thing then sounds like this.

Ich stelle mir heute die Frage, ob es auch 1916 möglich gewesen wäre, Musik beim Autofahren zu hören. Darum werde ich jetzt den großen Vergleichstest "Bluetooth vs Schellack" durchführen. Immerhin gab es ja schon Schellack Platten und auch transportable Grammophone. Ich erinnere mich auch an eine Szene in einem Film von Stan Laurel und Oliver Hardy, in der sie ein Grammophon in einem Model-T eingebaut hatten. Also last es uns ausprobieren, ob das wirklich funktioniert.

Im direkten Vergleich geht das Design des Grammophons als klarer Sieger hervor. Es gibt sich im geschlossenen Zustand dezent in edlem Bordeaux Rot und verwandelt sich nach Öffnen des Deckels in eine elegante Erscheinung. Der Bluetooth Lautsprecher Megaboom von Ultimate Ears kommt im dezenten Schwarz und bleibt dezent in seiner Erscheinung, egal was man mit ihm macht. Jetzt kommt der Hörvergleich. Der Plattenspieler ist leiser als der Bluetooth Lautsprecher. Auch sind die Abspielgeräusche, der mechanische Motor mit dem Fliehkraftregler und das Kratzen der Nadel deutlich zu hören. Hier kann die moderne Technik klar gewinnen. Die digitalisierte Aufnahme hört sich besser an.  Bix Beiderbecke's Kornett strahlt über dem Orchester und das Bass Saxophon von Min Leibrook schiebt das Orchester aus den Tiefen vor sich her und sägt das Dach auf.
Now comes the audio comparison. The record player is quieter than the Bluetooth speaker. The playback noise, the mechanical motor with the centrifugal governor and the scratching of the needle are also clearly audible. The modern technology can clearly win here. The digitized recording sounds better.  Bix Beiderbecke's cornet shines above the orchestra and Min Leibrook's bass saxophone pushes the orchestra from the depths in front of it and saws the roof open.

156. Tag - Antriebswelle fetten / Grease Drive Shaft

Um den Ölverlust an der Getriebewelle zu stoppen, habe ich alles gesäubert und die Welle an den zwei Schmiernippel neu gefettet. Hierzu habe ich extra steifes Fett genommen. Vielleicht hat es eine dichtende Wirkung.
To stop the oil loss at the gear shaft, I cleaned everything and re-greased the shaft at the two grease nipples. For this I took extra stiff grease. Maybe it has a sealing effect.

Insgesamt habe ich jeweils 3 Füllungen der Fettkappen hinein gedrückt. Jetzt werde ich diese Stelle besonders beobachten.
I pressed a total of 3 fillings of the grease caps into each. Now I will pay special attention to this spot.

Bei der Wartungsarbeit ist aufgefallen, dass sich eine Mutter an der linken Schubstrebe gelockert hat. Diese habe ich noch festgezogen, bevor die Fußbretter wieder montiert wurden.
During maintenance work, I noticed that a nut on the left thrust strut had loosened. I tightened this before the footboards were mounted again.

155. Tag - Facebook Gruppe Unterstützung / Facebook Group Support

Das Problem mit dem Ölverlust habe ich in der Facebook Gruppe Model T Ford Owners" gepostet. Es gab sehr viele Vorschläge wie man das Problem in den Griff bekommen kann. Hier eine Übersicht der Vorschläge. Sie unterteilen sich in 3 Gruppen:
1) Ölverlust akzeptieren
2) Fehler suchen
3) Herauslaufendes Öl auffangen
I posted the oil leak problem in the "Model T Ford Owners" Facebook group. There were a lot of suggestions how to get the problem under control. Here is an overview of the suggestions. They are divided into 3 groups:
1) Accept oil loss
2) Search for the error
3) Collect leaking oil

The popular saying is, when a model T don't drip oil the problems starts, as then it's out of oil.

That said, you can do a lot to reduce oilspill.

That particular place might be becauce a gasket that should not be there.

Between the loose universal ball cap (with the 4th main) and the gearbox, there should be a papergasket, but not on the assembly of the 2 halves of the ball cap.

Universal ball cap at the end of the transmission might be worn keep it it's a core and get a re babbitted one

A Model T that's leaking oil ?

Model t Mark their spots. They paved rhe roads back in the hey days. Until the invention of RTV gasket maker. Usually over full crank case same goes for radiator. And rear axle. Don’t even worry about it. Just check at level the top oil check vavle just dips out toe to time. T’s only leak when they are standing still. Drive it.

Yep. Seepage. No oil pressure. Maybe 1 psi. 

On a day during rebuild your can seal it. But takes months to get it back in the car. When your working. Bandaids are good. Tighten all the bolts. Starters would come loose and leak there

And they stop leaking when the oil is gone.

Good luck 

Put a grease cup in that has a zirk fitting in it and grease it very liberally

If it stops leaking it’s out of fluid.

Moin aus Hamburg... auf die finale Lösung zur Behebung des Ölverlustes am Übergang zur Kurbelwelle warte ich schon seit einigen Jahren, denn mein 26er T-Tudor verliert genau an der Stelle dauerhaft Öl. Ich habe aber keine Lust den Motor dafür auszubauen. Mittlerweile habe ich mich mittels Öl nachfüllen dran gewöhnt, dass das Model T genau dort dauerhaft Tropfen muss?!

You can make a cover for over the ball with a oil absorbent cloth inside. Won’t stop the leak but it will keep it off the floor. You want to keep that area well lubed so expect grease to come out.

I strung a small plastic container under my rocky brakes cradle to catch the worst!

Just put a mask on it.every one seems to be wearing them these days!!

If it aint leaking it needs oil

It would not be a first! They make a pan to hang under the Model A diffy housing for the same reason. Of course people have been known to hang a can under there too. If I am going to show and sometimes out on tours, I carry a piece of card board to put under the car when parked. A drip might be one thing, but don't like leaving a glob behind. LOL

wrap it with a diaper.

It may be the rear differential oil running up the drive shaft. Check your differential and see if it’s low.

Differential oil does not run up hill. Engine oil, going thru the 4th main into the u joint housing does run down hill, so they should check how full the pumpkin is

So what if you are going down a steep hill. Not everyone lives on flat land!

It's cheaper and easier to live with it!

A super absorbent diaper will work wonders for a Long Time. Simply put on a new one every month or two

Drip pans are the best answer! 

154. Tag - Schraubenfertigung / Crew Manufacturing

Heute muss ich noch schnell eine Zollschraube bauen, damit ich den Bremslichtschalter montieren kann. hierzu möchte ich eine Mutter an das Reststück der gekürzten Schraube schweißen. Ich muss mir mal dringend ein Sortiment Zollschrauben zulegen, damit ich sowas nicht mehr machen muss. Aber am Ende halte ich eine funktionierende Schraube in der Hand und kann den Bremslichtschalter montieren. Das Bremslicht funktioniert jetzt hervorragend.
Today I have to quickly build an inch screw so that I can mount the brake light switch. For this I want to weld a nut to the remaining piece of the shortened screw. I must get me times urgently an assortment inch screws, so that I do not have to do something like that. But in the end I hold a working screw in my hand and can mount the brake light switch. The brake light now works great.

153. Tag - Bremslichtschalter / Stop Light Switch

Diesen Umbau habe ich schon lange geplant. Die alte Bastellösung wird ersetzt und das Model T bekommt jetzt einen neuen Bremslichtschalter. Der neue Schalter besteht aus einem Metallbügel und einem Druckschalter. Der Bügel wird quer über den Servicedeckel des Getriebes montiert und platziert den Schalter links neben die Achse des Bremshebels. Die Konstruktion nutzt den Umstand aus, dass sich die Bremshebelachse bei Betätigung der Bremse nach links verschiebt. Diese Bewegung spannt das Bremsband um die Bremstrommel. Diese Lösung ist wirklich gut, da sie keine lange Zugfeder benötig, die  irgendwie an den Bremshebel befestigt werden muss. Das ist eine andere Lösung, die oft bei Oldtimer zur Anwendung kommt.
I have planned this conversion for a long time. The old tinker solution is replaced and the Model T now gets a new brake light switch. The new switch consists of a metal bracket and a pressure switch. The bracket is mounted across the transmission door and places the switch to the left of the axle of the brake lever. The design takes advantage of the fact that the brake lever axle moves to the left when the brake is applied. This movement tightens the brake band around the brake drum. This solution is really good because it doesn't require a long tension spring that somehow has to be attached to the brake lever. This is another solution that is often used on vintage cars.

Allerdings gibt es zwei Dinge zu beachten.
Falls man einen gebogenen Servicedeckel hat muss man ihn herumdrehen, damit der Buckel des Deckels nicht nach außen, sondern in das Getriebe hinein ragt. Nur so liegt der Metallbügel dann flach auf und kann festgeschraubt werden.
However, there are two things to keep in mind. 

If you have a curved transmission door, you have to turn it around so that the hump of the door does not protrude outward but into the gearbox. This is the only way to ensure that the metal bracket lies flat and can be screwed tight.

Dann fällt einem auf, dass die originalen Schrauben des Servicedeckels zu kurz sind um den Metallbügel festzuschrauben. Sehr schade, dass nicht gleich zwei passende Schrauben mitgeliefert werden. Das würde die Kundenzufriedenheit sicher erhöhen. 
Then you notice that the original screws of the transmission door are too short to tighten the metal bracket. It is a pity that two matching screws are not included. That would certainly increase customer satisfaction. 

Und schon wieder habe ich das Problem eine passende Zollschraube zu finden. Eine fand ich sogar und muss morgen versuchen daraus zwei Schrauben zu basteln.
And again I have the problem to find a suitable inch screw. One I even found and must try tomorrow to make two screws from it.

Hier kommt jetzt der Funktionstest. Die Konstruktion funktioniert auf Anhieb.

152. Tag - Ölverlust / Oil Leckage

Es regnet seit Tagen und nasse Straßen zeigen einen Öl- oder Benzinverlust mit schönen schillernden Farben. So bin ich auf einen Ölverlust am Getriebeausgang aufmerksam geworden. Diesem Problem werde ich mich die nächsten Tagen widmen müssen. Vielleicht hat ja jemand einen Lösungsvorschlag.
It's been raining for days and wet roads show an oil or gasoline leak with beautiful iridescent colors. So I became aware of an oil loss at the gearbox. I will have to devote the next few days to this problem. Maybe someone has a solution suggestion.

151. Tag - Model T driving in smartphone mode

Winterzeit ist doof! Ständig ist es dunkel, man braucht Licht am Auto und es fährt immer die Angst mit, dass die Batterien leer werdend. Habe ich schon mal erwähnt, dass mein Magneto nicht funktioniert? Also lade ich nach jeder Fahrt die Batterie wieder auf. Da das Kabel vom Ladegerät nach vorn zur Steckdose führt, stolpere ich auch mindestens einmal am Tag darüber und reiße den Stecker aus der Steckdose.

Das ist ja genauso nervig wie ein Smartphone, welches man auch bei jeder sich bietenden Gelegenheit ans Ladegerät anschließen muss. Hoffentlich ist bald der Winter wieder vorbei. Im Moment behindern nämlich die Corona-Regeln meinen ursprünglichen Plan im Dezember wieder den originalen Motor einzubauen. Ich kann nämlich nicht für eine Woche zu Werner nach Mönchengladbach fahren um den Motor wechseln. Vielleicht geht das im Januar. So lange fahre ich das Model-T noch im Smartphonmodus.
Wintertime is stupid! It's constantly dark, you need light on the car and there is always the fear that the batteries empty. Have I ever mentioned that my magneto does not work? So I recharge the battery after every ride. Since the cable from the charger goes forward to the outlet, I also trip over it at least once a day and rip the plug out of the outlet. That's just as annoying as a smartphone, which you also have to plug into the charger every chance you get. Hopefully, winter will soon be over again. Right now, the Corona rules are getting in the way of my original plan to re-install the original engine in December. I can't go to Werner in Mönchengladbach for a week to change the engine. Maybe I can do it in January. So long I still drive the Model-T in smartphone mode.

150. Tag - Klappernder Scheinwerfer / Rattling Headlight

Haben sie schon mal einen LKW Fahrer auf dem Rastplatz gesehen, der mit einem Hammer auf die Reifen klopft? Heute habe ich im Vorbeigehen kurz an das rechte Hinterrad getreten und - es rappelte vorn am Wagen. Uppps! Noch mal an den Reifen geklopft und wieder rappelt es vorn am Wagen. Nach dem ich den Fensterrahmen und den Kotflügel geprüft hatte, fand sich die Ursache im rechten Scheinwerfer. Das Scheinwerferglas rappelt im Scheinwerferring.
Have you ever seen a truck driver at the rest area who knocks on the tires with a hammer? Today, in passing, I briefly kicked the right rear wheel and - it rattled the front of the car. Oops! Another knock on the tire and again it rattles the front of the car. After checking the window frame and the fender, the cause was found in the right headlight. The headlight glass rattles in the headlight ring.

Eigentlich sollte der Federring hinter dem Reflektor, diesen an die Scheibe drücken. Das funktioniert auch so weit. Der Reflektor wird vom Federring ganz nach vorn gedrückt.
Actually, the spring washer behind the reflector should press it against the disk. This also works so far. The reflector is pressed all the way forward by the spring washer.

Danach habe ich beide Lampenringe geprüft. Die Scheiben werden in die Lampenringe gelegt und mit umgebogene Blechlaschen fixiert. Die Gläser liegen relativ lose in den Lampenringen. Das ist aber bei beiden Scheinwerfer gleich.
I then checked both headlight rims. The glasses are placed in the rims and fixed with bent-over sheet metal tabs. The lenses are relatively loose in the rims. But this is the same for both headlights.

Am Ende wechsele ich einfache die Scheinwerferringe von links nach rechts und das klappern ist weg.
In the end, I simply change the headlight rims from left to right and the rattling is gone.
