290. Tag - Ich bin so glücklich / I'm so happy

Jetzt kann ich wieder parken, ohne was unterlegen zu müssen. Das macht den Model-T Fahrer richtig glücklich. Hier stand der Wagen 5 Stunden ohne dass es ein Tropfen Öl den Motor verlassen hätte.

Als ich ankam hing hier an der gestern abgedichteten neuralgischen Stelle ein Tropfen Öl. Auf der anderen Seite auch. Diese habe ich abgewischt. Außer zwei Tropfen Wasser war danach hier nichts mehr zu sehen. Vielleicht bekomme ich die Stelle noch 100% dicht oder ich montiere eine kleine Wanne.

289. Tag - gehärtete Pedalwellen / Hardened Pedal Shafts

Normalerweise sind die 3 Pedalwellen die Hauptursache für Ölverlust. Bei der Motorüberholung hat Werner hier aber 3 gehärtete Wellen und Wellendichtringe eingebaut. Nicht original, aber aus heutiger Sicht eine sehr sinnvolle Verbesserung. Und tatsächlich die 3 Wellen sind dicht.
Normally, the 3 pedal shafts are the main cause of oil loss. But during the engine overhaul Werner has installed here 3 hardened shafts and shaft seals. Not original, but from today's point of view a very useful improvement. And indeed the 3 shafts are tight.

288. Tag - Motorgehäuse abdichten / Seal Motor Housing

Ich möchte nicht aufgeben den Motor ganz abzudichten. Zuerst versuche ich den Getriebedeckel ganz dicht zu bekommen. Ich versuche den Deckel leicht anzuheben und an der undichten Stelle noch etwas Klebstoff hinein zu spritzen. Der Deckel lässt sich aber nicht abheben ohne die Dichtung zu beschädigen. Entweder kann ich den Deckel von außen abdichten oder ich muss die Dichtung komplett erneuern. Ich versuche erst mal den Deckel von außen abzudichten.
I don't want to give up on sealing the engine all the way. First I try to get the gearbox cover completely tight. I try to lift the door slightly and squirt some more glue in at the leaky spot. But the cover can't be lifted off without damaging the seal. Either I can seal the door from the outside or I have to replace the gasket completely. I'll try to seal the lid from the outside first.

Die beiden undichten Stellen an der Ölwanne sind eigentlich beim Zusammenbau des Motors abzudichten. Da ich gerade keine Zeit und Lust habe den Motor auszubauen und zu zerlegen versuche ich erst mal ihn von außen abzudichten.
The two leaks on the oil pan are actually to seal when assembling the engine. Since I do not have time and desire to remove the engine and disassemble it, I'll try to seal it from the outside.

Zuerst löse ich die beiden Schrauben und entferne das Silikon. Dann reinige ich die Stelle mit Nitro Verdünner und dichte die Stelle erneut ab. 
First, I loosen the two screws and remove the silicone. Then I clean the spot with nitro thinner and seal the spot again.

Nach 7 km weiterer Fahrt hier nun das vorläufige Ergebnis. Die Stellen am Motorblock sind noch nicht ganz dicht, der Ölverlust ist aber noch mal reduziert. Auf dem nachfolgenden Bild gibt es zwei ganz kleine Öltropfen zu finden.

Nachdem ich den Wagen in die Garage gefahren habe, finde ich noch einen Tropfen Öl an der Kardanwelle. Die Relativbewegung der Kardanwelle hat die Abdichtung etwas aufgerissen.  
After 7 km of further driving here now the preliminary result. The spots on the engine block are still not completely tight, but the oil loss is reduced again. On the following picture there are two very small oil drops to find.
After driving the car into the garage, I find another drop of oil on the drive shaft. The relative movement of the drive shaft has torn open the seal a bit.  

Wenn ich ehrlich bin, habe ich nicht gedacht, dass eine nachträgliche äußere Abdichtung funktioniert.
If I'm honest, I didn't think retrofitting exterior waterproofing would work.

287. Tag - Überprüfung des Ölverlustes / Oil Leackage Check

Jetzt wird es spannend. Ist es mir gelungen den Getriebedeckel komplett abzudichten und was passiert jetzt an der Kardanwelle. 

Zuerst lasse ich den Motor im Stand laufen. Nach 10 Minuten ist kein Öl am Getriebedeckel und auch nicht an der Kardanwelle zu sehen.
Now it's getting exciting. Did I manage to seal the transmission cover completely and what happens now at the drive shaft. 
First I let the engine run at standstill. After 10 minutes, there is no oil on the gearbox cover or on the drive shaft.

Auch nach 20 Minuten gibt es noch kein Ölaustritt.
Even after 20 minutes, there is still no oil leakage.

Dann fahre ich 25 Kilometer. Oben ist der Getriebedeckel sauber.
Then I drive 25 kilometers. The transmission door is clean at the top.

Es gibt kein Ölverlust an der Kardanwelle.
There is no oil loss from the drive shaft.

Es gibt aber noch drei undichte Stellen.
Der Getriebedeckel ist auf der linken Seite noch etwas undicht.
However, there are still three leaks.

The transmission door is still leaking a bit on the left side.

Und an der Ölwanne gibt es zwei undichte Stellen. Es sind die Ecken an denen der Motorblock, die Ölwanne und der Getriebedecke aufeinander treffen. Diese Ecken links und rechts hinter dem Anlasser und dem Vergaser sind ganz schwer abzudichten, da sich hier jeweils zwei Dichtungen treffen. 
And there are two leaks on the oil pan. These are the corners where the engine block, oil pan and transmission cover meet. These corners on the left and right behind the starter and the carburetor are very difficult to seal because two seals meet here. 

Trotzdem ist es ein riesen Erfolg. Der Ölverlust ist um 95% reduziert. Es gibt nur noch zwei kleine Tropfen auf dem Asphalt.
Nevertheless, it is a huge success. The oil loss is reduced by 95%. There are now only two small drops on the asphalt.

286. Tag - Kardanwelle abdichten / Seal Drive Shaft

Das ist sicher nicht die Lösung, aber ich wollte einfach mal versuchen was passiert, wenn ich den Spalt zwischen dem Kugelgehäuse und der Kardanwelle mit Klebstoff abdichte. Der Spalt ist wichtig, da die Kardanwelle das Einfedern der Hinterachse ausgleichen muss. Darum gibt es hier auch keine Dichtung. Aber es gibt Einlagebleche um das Spiel zu reduzieren. Warum also nicht einfach mal eine Dichtmasse dazwischen spritzen. Vermutlich wird sie ja auch nicht wegen der Bewegung der Kardanwelle dicht bleiben. Mal sehen was die Dichtmasse bewirkt. Vielleicht reduziert sie ja den Ölaustritt.
Es kann aber auch sein, dass das Öl statt hier herauszulaufen nun durch das Kardanrohr ins Getriebe läuft und dann an den Bremsen herausläuft.

This is certainly not the solution, but I just wanted to try what happens when I seal the gap between the ball housing and the cardan shaft with adhesive. The gap is important because the cardan shaft must compensate for the deflection of the rear axle. That's why there is no seal here. But there are insert plates to reduce the play. So why not just spray a sealant in between. Probably it will not stay tight because of the movement of the cardan shaft. Let's see what the sealant does. Maybe it reduces the oil leakage.
It may also be that the oil instead of running out here now runs through the cardan tube into the gearbox and then runs out at the brakes.

285. Tag - Ölleck gefunden / Oil leak found

Nachdem ich die Schrauben der Ölwanne am 275. Tag nachgezogen hatte, ist der Ölverlust entlang der Ölwannendichtung mehr geworden. Das Fahren hat so keinen Spaß mehr gemacht, da bei jedem Stopp unter dem Wagen lag und den Motor mit einem Lappen säuberte um zu vermeiden, dass das Öl auf die Straße läuft. Das war natürlich keine Lösung. Also habe ich mir für heute vorgenommen der Sache näher auf den Grund zu gehen. Die undichte Stelle solle doch in der Werkstatt bei laufendem Motor zu finden sein. Sicher ist es auch unwahrscheinlich, dass das Öl überall entlang der Ölwannendichtung herausläuft.
Ich nehme die Bodenplatten vorn heraus und bin ziemlich überrascht was ich da sehe. Das Getriebe ist oben komplett mit Öl benetzt. Sogar der Magnetokontakt ist voller Öl. 

After I tightened the oil pan bolts on the 275th day, the oil loss along the oil pan gasket has become more. Driving was no longer fun this way, as at every stop I lay under the car and cleaned the engine with a rag to prevent the oil from running onto the road. This was of course no solution. So I decided to get to the bottom of it today. The leak should be found in the workshop with the engine running. Surely it is also unlikely that the oil runs out everywhere along the oil pan gasket.
I take out the front floor pans and am quite surprised at what I see. The top of the gearbox is completely wet with oil. Even the magneto contact is full of oil. 

Die Ursache ist schnell gefunden. Der Getriebedeckel ist nicht dicht. Das öl läuft auf allen Seiten heraus. Von unten sieht das dann aus, als würde das Öl aus der Ölwannendichtung herauslaufen.
The cause is quickly found. The transmission door is not tight. The oil is leaking out on all sides. From below, it looks as if the oil is leaking out of the oil pan gasket.

Selbst oben am Deckel kommt Öl heraus. Das ist auch der Grund warum nicht nur der Magnetokontakt sondern auch die Bodenbretter von unten mit Öl benetzt sind.
Oil even comes out of the top of the transmission door. This is also the reason why not only the magneto contact but also the bottom boards are wetted with oil from below.

Es reicht nicht den Deckel nur mit einer Papierdichtung abzudichten. Das Hauptproblem ist der Deckel selbst. Dieser ist nicht ganz eben und kann darum nicht sauber abdichten.
It is not enough to seal the transmission door with a paper gasket only. The main problem is the door itself. It is not completely flat and therefore cannot seal properly.

Ich nehme den Deckel ab, reinige ihn und versuche ihn so gut wie möglich wieder zu richten. 
I take the transmission door off, clean it, and try to straighten it as best I can.

Die alte Dichtung wird durch eine neue Dichtung ersetzt und mit einem flüssigen Dichtstoff auf beiden Seiten wieder montiert. Ich lasse den Wagen jetzt bis morgen stehen und teste dann die Dichtigkeit des Deckels.
Replaced the old gasket with a new one and reinstalled it with a liquid sealant on both sides. I will now leave the car until tomorrow and then test the tightness of the transmission door.

275. Tag - Ölverlust / Oil Leckage

Jetzt geht es dem Ölverlust an den Kragen. Es gibt den Ölverlust am Getriebeausgang. Da das Öl zwischen dem Kugelgehäuse und dem Kardan austritt, ist die undichte Stelle wohl das hintere Hauptlager. Daran kann ich erst mal nicht viel ändern, ohne den Motor oder zumindest die Antriebswelle auszubauen. Den zur Zeit in Reparatur befindlichen Motor, lasse ich aber lieber mit einem abgedichteten Kugellager ausstatten. Das ist zwar nicht original, einen solchen Ölverlust finde ich aber ist auch nicht akzeptabel.

Beim Versuch die 4 Schrauben des Kugelgehäuses anzuziehen, habe ich das Gefühl, dass die Schrauben nicht mehr richtig greifen. Vielleicht sollte ich die Gewinde auf das nächst größere metrische Maß schneiden. 
Now it's time to get to grips with the oil loss. There is the oil loss at the gearbox outlet. Since the oil leaks between the ball housing and the gimbal, the leak is probably the rear main bearing. I can't do much about that for now without removing the engine or at least the drive shaft. However, I prefer to have the motor, which is currently under repair, fitted with a sealed ball bearing. This is not original, but I find such an oil loss is also not acceptable.
When trying to tighten the 4 screws of the ball housing, I feel that the screws no longer grip properly. Maybe I should cut the threads to the next larger metric size. 

Aber Öl tritt nicht nur an der Antriebswelle aus, sondern auch entlang der Dichtung der Ölwanne zum Motorblock. Dieser Ölverlust ist mehr geworden. 
But oil is leaking not only from the drive shaft, but also along the oil pan gasket to the engine block. This oil leakage has become more. 

Ich ziehe alle Schrauben der Ölwanne nach und bin erstaunt, dass sich jede Schraube mehr als eine Umdrehung nachdrehen läßt. Vermutlich ist das zusätzlich zur Abdichtung genutzte Silikon der Grund.
I retighten all the screws of the oil pan and am amazed that each screw can be retightened more than one turn. Presumably, the silicone used additionally for sealing is the reason.

Die erste Probefahrt zeigt aber noch nicht den gewünschten Erfolg. Noch immer tritt Öl an der Ölwanne aus. Der Wagen bleibt jetzt erst mal in der Werkstatt, bis das Problem zufriedenstellend gelöst ist.
However, the first test drive does not yet show the desired success. Oil is still leaking from the oil pan. The car now remains in the workshop until the problem is solved satisfactorily.
