272. Tag - Pleuellager Check / Connecting rod bearing check

Was mich schon eine ziemlich lange Zeit stört ist ein klapperndes Motorgeräusch, dass ich nur höre, wenn ich vor dem Kühler stehe. Außerdem hatte ich bei jedem Ölwechsel Bruchstücke von Sicherungssplinte gefunden. Es wird mal Zeit, dass ich mir das näher anschauen.
What has been bothering me for quite a long time is a rattling engine noise that I only hear when standing in front of the radiator. Also, I had found broken pieces of fuse splinters every time I changed the oil. It's about time I took a closer look.

Zuerst lasse ich das Öl ab und entferne dann die 3 Verschlusskappen der Partikelfallen an der Revisionsklappe. Diese Partikelfallen sind nicht original, sondern eine Idee von Werner Straube. Ich muss sagen, dass diese sehr gut funktionieren. Beim ersten Ölwechsel hatte ich verschiedene Metallteile und Ölschlamm darin gefunden. Beim zweiten Ölwechsel gab es auch Metallteile und Wasser, dass sich darin abgesetzt hat. Mal sehen was ich heute darin finde.
First I drain the oil and then remove the 3 caps of the particle traps on the inspection door. These particle traps are not original, but an idea of Werner Straube. I must say that these work very well. At the first oil change I had found various metal parts and oil sludge in them. At the second oil change there were also metal parts and water that settled in it. Let's see what I find in it today.

Ich schraube die ganze Revisionsklappe ab und bin sehr überrascht. in der zweiten Partikelfalle hat sich ein Sicherungsdraht verfangen. Er hat einen Durchmesser von 1mm und eine Länge von 70mm. Ohne die Partikelfalle, wäre der Draht irgendwo sonst im Motor gelandet. Werner, deine Konstruktion ist sehr nützlich. Leider habe ich Moment keine Idee wo der Sicherungsdraht fehlt.
I unscrew the whole inspection flap and am very surprised. in the second particle trap, a safety wire has become entangled. It has a diameter of 1mm and a length of 70mm. Without the particle trap, the wire would have ended up somewhere else in the engine. Werner, your construction is very useful. Unfortunately, at the moment I have no idea where the fuse wire is missing.

Werner hat bei der Instandsetzung des Motors die Ölwanne um die Revisionsklappe mit Silikon aufgefüllt, damit sich dort kein Ölschlamm mehr absetzen kann. Das funktioniert auch. Ich finde an diesen Stellen kein Ölschlamm. Allerdings gibt es noch zwei Bruchstücke der Sicherungssplinte.
When Werner repaired the engine, he filled the oil pan around the inspection flap with silicone so that no more oil sludge can settle there. This also works. I can't find any oil sludge in these places. However, there are still two broken pieces of the securing cotter pins.

Ich reinige die Revisionsklappe und bereite sie für den Einbau vor.
I clean the access panel and prepare it for installation.

Tatsächlich fehlt beim dritten Pleuel ein kompletter Sicherungssplint und am vierten Pleuel Teile eines Sicherungssplintes. Die Schrauben sind aber noch fest angezogen.
In fact, the third connecting rod is missing a complete locking cotter pin and the fourth connecting rod is missing parts of a locking cotter pin. However, the screws are still tight.

Die Pleuel lassen sich von Hand axial verschieben. Ich kann kein radiales Lagerspiel feststellen, wobei man aber ein Spiel unter 0,05mm nicht mit der Hand spüren kann. Das Öl auf der Gleitfläche verhindert das.  Die Lagerschalen sehen gut aus.
The connecting rods can be moved axially by hand. I can't detect any radial bearing play, although you can't feel any play below 0.05mm with your hand. The oil on the sliding surface prevents that.  The bearing shells look good.

Die Lager werden übrigens mit Shims eingestellt. Shims sind Messing Unterlagsscheiben, die aus mehreren 0,05mm dünnen Bleche gepresst sind. Man kann mit dem Messer jeweils eine dünne Lage entfernen und so das Lagerspiel einstellen. Entfernt man nur eine Lage eines Shims, reduziert sich das Lagerspiel um 0,025mm. Das habe ich auch so gemacht und versucht die Lagertoleranzen zu reduzieren.
Ich konnte die Lagerspiele der ersten 3 Pleuel um jeweils eine Shimlage verringern. Bei mehr, konnte ich die Lager nicht mehr axial schieben, also habe ich es erst mal so gelassen. Ich werde noch mal im Reparaturhandbuch nachlesen ob das so richtig ist.

By the way, the bearings are adjusted with shims. Shims are brass washers pressed from several 0.05mm thin sheets. You can remove one thin layer at a time with a knife to adjust the bearing clearance. If you remove only one layer of a shim, the bearing clearance is reduced by 0.025mm. I did the same and tried to reduce the bearing tolerances.

I was able to reduce the bearing clearances of the first 3 connecting rods by one layer of shim each. With more, I could not push the bearings axially, so I left it that way for now. I will check the repair manual to see if this is correct.

Hier habe ich noch einen Fehler gemacht, den ich anschließend korrigierte. Die Markierungen (eingeschlagene Punkte) auf den beiden Lagerschalen sollten auf der gleichen Seite sein. Der erste Pleuel und seine Schale sind jeweils mit einem Punkt gekennzeichnet, das zweite Pleuel mit 2 Punkten usw.. Die Markierungen befinden sich auf der rechten Seite. Auf dem ersten Bild sieht man also das 3. Pleuel, bei dem ich zuerst die Lageschale falsch montiert habe. Das zweite Bild zeigt das erste Pleuel mit richtig montierter Lagerschale. Auf dem zweiten Bild sieht man auch gut das Shim zwischen Pleuelstange und Lagerschale.
Here I made mistake, which I subsequently corrected. The markings (hammered points) on the two bearing shells should be on the same side. The first connecting rod and its shell are each marked with one dot, the second connecting rod with 2 dots, and so on. The markings are on the right side. So in the first picture you can see the 3rd connecting rod where I first mounted the bearing shell incorrectly. The second picture shows the first connecting rod with the bearing shell mounted correctly. On the second picture you can also see the shim between connecting rod and bearing shell.

Jetzt wieder die Serviceklappe montieren. Ich habe zur Dichtung noch zusätzlich UHU Flächendichtung verwendet. Die Tube ist übrigens eine Mogelpackung. Sie ist nur zu einem Drittel gefüllt.
Now mount the service flap again. I also used UHU surface sealant for the seal. By the way, the tube is a deceptive package. It is only one third full.

Beim Probelauf klappert der Motor subjektiv etwas weniger. Vielleicht bilde ich mir das aber auch nur ein.
Jetzt werde ich erst mal klären, wie eng man die Toleranzen der Pleuellager einstellt und woher der Sicherungsdraht stammt.

Zurück aus der Werkstatt nehme ich mir das Ford Reparaturhandbuch und lese noch mal die Einstellung der Pleuellager nach: "Die Stange soll so auf die Kurbelwelle angepaßt werden, daß sie sich leicht auf der Welle bewegt, wenn der Lagerdeckel seitlich mit einem kleinen Messinghammer beklopft wird. Die Verschiebung der Stange auf der Welle kann bemerkt werden, wenn man einen Finger an die eine Seite des Deckels hält während man die andere Seite beklopft."
Das Lagerspiel ist also zu groß, wenn man die Pleuelstange einfach mit der Hand bewegen kann. Ich werde die Lager also noch einmal einstellen müssen.

Ich habe auch gerade mit Werner telefoniert und ihm von dem klackenden Geräusch des Motors berichtet. Er hat mich darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass von den 14 Schrauben der Revisionsklappe eine gibt, die kürzer ist. Diese muss hinten in der Mitte eingeschraubt werden, da eine lange Schraube mit der 4. Pleuellagerschale kollidieren könnte und dann genau so ein Geräusch verursachen könnte. Die kurze Schraube ist mir auch aufgefallen, war aber links vorn eingeschraubt. Ich bin gespannt, ob das die Lösung sein könnte.

Back from the shop, I take the Ford repair manual and reread the connecting rod bearing adjustment: "The rod should be adjusted to fit the crankshaft so that it moves slightly on the shaft when the bearing cap is tapped on the side with a small brass mallet. The shifting of the rod on the shaft can be noticed by holding a finger to one side of the cover while tapping the other side."

So the bearing play is too much if you can just move the connecting rod by hand. So I will have to adjust the bearings again. I also just got off the phone with Werner and told him about the engine clacking noise. He pointed out to me that of the 14 screws of the revision cover, there is one that is shorter. This one has to be screwed in the middle at the back, because a long screw could collide with the 4th connecting rod bearing shell and then cause exactly such a noise. I also noticed the short screw, but it was screwed in on the left front. I am curious if this could be the solution.

271. Tag - Nicht mehr allein / No longer alone

Ab heute bin ich nicht mehr allein auf der Straße. Ich bin heute einem Käfer und einem Jaguar E-Type Coupe begegnet. Außerdem gab es noch einen Porsche 944, Toyota MR2 und einem Audi 100 aus den 80er. 

Da ist aber noch etwas passiert: Ich habe die 2000km heute erreicht. Seit dem Anfang des Blogs bin ich jetzt 2033km mit dem Model T gefahren.
As of today, I am no longer alone on the road. I encountered a Beetle and a Jaguar E-Type Coupe today. There was also a Porsche 944, Toyota MR2 and an Audi 100 from the 80s. But something else happened: I reached the 2000km today. Since the beginning of the blog I have now driven 2033km with the Model T.

270. Tag - Go Pro Zubehör / Go Pro Accessories

Ich habe mich gestern schon gewundert warum das Video der Kamera an der Wagenseite so verwackelt ist. Heute weiß ich den Grund. Das Mittelteil des Halters ist durchgebrochen. Ein Glück, dass es nicht am Wagen komplett durchgebrochen ist. Dann wäre die Kamera verloren.
Diese Teil ist übrigens kein GoPro Originalteil, sondern ein auf Ebay gekaufte Nachfertigung. Ich dachte das Originalzubehör ist zu teuer. Jetzt wäre fast die Nachfertigung richtig teuer geworden.

Yesterday I wondered why the video of the camera on the side of the car is so blurred. Today I know the reason. The middle part of the holder is broken through. It's a good thing it didn't break through completely on the cart. Then the camera would be lost.
By the way, this part is not a GoPro original part, but a replica bought on Ebay. I thought the original accessories are too expensive. Now almost the replica would have been really expensive.

269. Tag - Klingt so ein Motorschaden? / Is that what engine damage sounds like?

Eigentlich sollte heute ein ganz normaler Freitag sein. Ich wollte jemand besuchen und zur Arbeit fahren. Insgesamt 29km bei bestem Wetter.
Unterwegs gab es eine kleine lustige Szene mit Hund.
Actually, today was supposed to be a normal Friday. I wanted to visit someone and drive to work. A total of 29km in the best weather.
On the way there was a small funny scene with dog.

Und dann der große Schreck. Klingt so ein kapitaler Motorschaden?
And then the big shock. Is that what a major engine failure sounds like?

Sofort anhalten und schauen wo das Wasser oder Öl rausläuft. Da ist aber kein Öl, auch kein Wasser. Stattdessen macht die Tachowelle eine lustige Figur. Da das Tachogetriebe gerade ausgebaut ist, hängt die Tachowelle nur mit einem Kabelbinder an der Achse. Nur, der Kabelbinder ist verschwunden und die Welle hat sich zwischen dem großen Zahnrad des Tachoantriebes und dem Rad verfangen und schlägt an die Speichen des Zahnrades. Es ist kein Schaden entstanden, es war nur ein großer Schreck.
Stop immediately and look where the water or oil is running out. But there is no oil, and no water either. Instead, the speedometer cable cuts a funny figure. Zur Weiterfahrt lege ich die Tachowelle unter die Blattfeder und über die Achse. Leider funktioniert das nur eine kurze Zeit.

Dann muss ich die Tachowelle doch mit Kabelbinder fixieren. Kabelbinder sind im Moment die größte Abweichung vom Originalzustand des Wagens.

Was ist sonst noch passiert? Heute wurde ich zweimal gefragt, ob der Wagen auf der Autobahn fahren darf. Ja klar!

268. Tag - Die kleinste Tankstelle in der Stadt / The smallest gas station in the city

Ich glaube heute die perfekte Tankstelle für mein Model T gefunden zu haben. Vielleicht sogar die beste Tankstelle für jeden hier. Es ist nicht so, dass sie besseres Benzin für ein Auto aus 1916 haben oder etwa der Zapfhahn besser passen würde. Nein es geht um die Tankstelle als ganzes. Es ist eine freie Tankstelle und sieht schon mal völlig anders aus, als die großen Tankstellenbetreiber in blau, gelb oder grün.
Diese Tankstelle hat genau eine Zapfsäule an der zwei Autos gleichzeitig tanken können. Sie gehört zu einer kleinen Werkstatt mitten in Bischmisheim, einem Stadtteil von Saarbrücken. Das ganze Umfeld ist eigentlich ein Dorf. Die Zapfsäule hat kein Stahldach wie es sonst üblich ist, sondern eine Zeltkonstruktion.
Eigentlich sieht sie genau so aus, wie die Tankstellen aus den alten Filmen. Auch in den Filmen gab es immer nur eine Zapfsäule, die von einer kleinen Werkstatt betrieben wurde. Zum Beispiel in "The Great Gatsby". Und genau so ist es auch hier. Besonders schön ist die Lage an einer kleinen Straßenkreuzung. Gegenüber gibt es dann auch noch ein kleiner Laden in dem man ... hmmmm ich habe gar nicht richtig geschaut, da ich leider nicht soviel Zeit hatte. Das mache ich dann mal beim nächsten Tanken.
Das Model T an der Tankstelle war ein schönes Bild.

I think I found the perfect gas station for my Model T today. Maybe even the best gas station for everyone here. It's not that they have better gas for a 1916 car or, say, that the nozzle would fit better. No it's about the gas station as a whole. It is a free gas station and looks completely different than the big gas station operators in blue, yellow or green.
This gas station has exactly one pump where two cars can fill up at the same time. It belongs to a small garage in the middle of Bischmisheim, a district of Saarbrücken. The whole area is actually a village. The gas pump does not have a steel roof as is usually the case, but a tent construction.
Actually, it looks exactly like the gas stations from the old movies. Also in the movies there was always only one gas pump, which was operated by a small workshop. For example, in "The Great Gatsby." And that's exactly how it is here. Especially nice is the location at a small street crossing. Opposite there is also a small store where you can ... hmmmm I have not really looked, because I unfortunately did not have so much time. I'll do that at the next refueling.

Zu einer solch kultigen Tankstelle und Werkstatt gehören natürlich auch die entsprechenden Fahrzeuge dazu. Ein alter Golf und ein Oldtimer Traktor. Der Traktor hat schon gewisse Designmerkmale mit dem Model T gemein. Ein hervorragendes Ambiente um mit dem Inhaber etwas über Oldtimer zu fachsimpeln. Zum Beispiel warum war eigentlich früher Blei im Benzin?
Such an iconic gas station and workshop naturally includes the appropriate vehicles. An old Golf and a vintage tractor. The tractor has certain design features in common with the Model T. Wenn der Tank voll ist geht es natürlich zum Bezahlen. Die Preise sind super und günstiger als bei den großen Tankstellenketten. Aber wo bringt man das Geld nach dem Tanken hin? In der Werkstatt ist gerade niemand und die kleine Tür führt nicht zur Kasse. Die Auflösung: es ist die linke Tür und schon steht man im Kassenraum. Die Leite sind super nett und es gibt einen jungen Hund. Der ist aber völlig aus dem Häuschen und es ist ganz schwierig ein scharfes Bild von ihm zu machen.

Falls sie sich für bei dem nächsten Tankstellenbesuch für den jungen Hund entscheiden, dann nicht zwischen 12:00 und 13:00. Da gibt es nämlich eine Mittagspause. Ansonsten ist die Tankstelle wirklich gut besucht. Es gab immer mindestens ein Auto an der Säule.

Aber leider gibt es auch was nicht so schönes zu berichten. Das ist der Geiselberg, über den man nach Bichmisheim kommt. Über 1km geht es steil bergauf. 7° oder 12% Steigung. Da kommt ein Model T ganz schön ins schwitzen.  Aber oben angekommen gibt es ja was zu trinken für das Auto.

If they decide for the young dog at the next gas station visit, then not between 12:00 and 13:00, because there is a lunch break. Otherwise, the gas station is really well attended. There was always at least one car at the gas pump.

But unfortunately there is also something not so nice to report. This is the Geiselberg, over which one comes to Bichmisheim. Over 1km it goes steeply uphill. 7° or 12% gradient. A Model T can really work up a sweat. But at the top there is something to drink for the car.

267. Tag . Stewarts Speedometer

Ich habe den Tachometer aus dem Wagen ausgebaut und möchte ihn erst überprüfen, bevor ich ihn später in Betrieb nehme. Zum Modell und Baujahr kann ich keine Hinweise finden. Eine kurze Internetrecherche läßt mich aber vermuten, dass er zum Baujahr des Wagens passt. Oft haben die Stewart Speedometer das Baujahr auf dem Zifferblatt. Bei meinem kann ich keinen Baujahr finden.
Der Speedometer hat eine Geschwindigkeitsanzeige (miles per hour)  und zwei Anzeigen für die Strecke in Meilen. Die Anzeige "Season Milage" zählt die Gesamtstrecke bis zu 9999 Meilen und die Anzeige "Trip" kann 99 Meilen messen. Die Tripanzeige kann manuell genullt werden.
I have removed the speedometer from the car and would like to check it first before I put it into operation later. I can't find any clues about the model and year of manufacture. However, a quick internet search leads me to believe that it matches the year of manufacture of the car. Often the Stewart speedometers have the year of manufacture on the dial. On mine I can't find a year of manufacture.
The speedometer has a speed display (miles per hour) and two displays for the distance in miles. The Season Milage display counts the total distance up to 9999 miles and the Trip display can measure 99 miles. The Trip display can be manually zeroed.

An diesem Stift, kann die Anzeige "Trip" vor- und zurück gedreht werden. Wenn man den Stift zieht, kann man die Anzeige direkt auf Null zurückstellen. Das funktioniert aber nicht immer richtig.

An der Unterseite ist der Anschluss für die Tachowelle. Das sieht soweit gut aus.

Jetzt möchte ich das Gehäuse öffnen um mir ein Bild über den technischen Zustand zu machen.

Ich löse die drei Schrauben um den hinteren Deckel zu öffnen.

Die hintere Platte ist aber nicht der Deckel des Gehäuses, sondern nur ein Adapterplatte zum Aufschrauben des Speedometers auf das Armaturenbrett. Die Funktion der kleinen schraube in der Mitte des Gehäuses ist nicht ersichtlich.
The rear plate is not the cover of the housing, but only an adapter plate for screwing the speedometer onto the dashboard. The function of the small screw in the middle of the housing is not obvious.

Ich schraube alles wieder zusammen. Zum Öffnen des Gehäuses muss ich den Messingring vorn abziehen. Das funktioniert aber nicht so einfach. Ich beschließe den Speedometer nicht zu öffnen um eine Beschädigung zu vermeiden. 
I screw everything back together. To open the housing, I have to pull off the brass ring at the front. But that does not work so easily. I decide not to open the speedometer to avoid damage. 

266. Tag - Ungebetene Besucher / Uninvited visitors

Heute ist es wieder passiert. Es war schon das vierte mal. Auf einmal sitzen fremde Menschen in meinem Auto. Die ersten drei mal waren es Eltern, die ihre Kinder einfach in den Wagen gesetzt haben und sie dort spielen ließen oder fotografierten. Heute saßen auf einmal zwei erwachsene Männer im Auto für ein Photoshooting. Ich habe sie auf ihr Verhalten angesprochen. Die Antwort war, dass sie ja nur mal ein Photo machen wollten.
Ist dieses Verhalten normal? Habt ihr auch schon mal Leute in Euren Autos sitzen gehabt, die da nicht hingehören?

Today it happened again. It was already the fourth time. All of a sudden, strangers are sitting in my car. The first three times it was parents who just put their children in the car and let them play there or took pictures. Today, all of a sudden, two grown men were sitting in the car for a photo shoot. I asked them about their behavior. The answer was that they just wanted to take a photo.
Is this behavior normal? Have you ever had people sitting in your cars who don't belong there?

265. Tag - Gewebeband / Fabric Tape

Im Baumarkt habe ich ein interessantes Isolierband gefunden. Es ist nicht das normale PVC Klebeband, sondern ein Textilklebeband. Es kostet 3,95€. Die original Kabelbäume sind mit einem ähnlichen Klebeband umwickelt. Vielleicht gelingt es mir damit meine Kabel eine zeitgemäße Optik zu geben.
In the hardware store I found an interesting insulating tape. It is not the normal PVC tape, but a textile tape. It costs 3,95€. The original wiring harnesses are wrapped with a similar tape. Maybe I can use it to give my cables a contemporary look.

Ich versuche es mal mit den Kabeln des Scheinwerfers. Diese habe ich irgendwann mal mit PVC Klebeband umwickelt. Das sieht ziemlich schlimm aus. Der Stecker ist auch nicht mehr schön. Aber zum üben ist es ein gutes Kabel.
I'll try it with the cables of the headlight. I wrapped these with PVC tape at some point. That looks pretty bad. The plug is also not nice anymore. But for practice it is a good cable.

Im Gegensatz zum PVC Klebeband ist das Textil Klebeband nicht so elastisch. Man muss also sehr genau beim Umwickeln arbeiten. Wenn man es richtig machen will, muss man das Kabel abbauen und in Ruhe auf der Werkbank bearbeiten. Die Optik des Kabels ist jetzt aber schon mal viel passender für das Model T. Ich bin gespannt ob das Klebeband auch wetterfest ist. Das PVC Band war es nicht und fing sich schon an abzulösen.
Unlike PVC tape, textile tape is not so elastic. So you have to work very precisely when wrapping. If you want to do it right, you have to dismantle the cable and work on it in peace on the workbench. The look of the cable is now but already much more suitable for the Model T. I am curious whether the tape is also weatherproof. The PVC tape was not and began to peel off.

264. Tag - Schreihals im Zündspulenkasten / Sreamer in the coil box

Da habe ich jetzt eine Zündspule im Zündspulenkasten die sich sehr auffällig benimmt. Sie ist laut, ein richtiger Schreihals. Es ist die Zündspule, welche ich am 258. Tag auf der Straße nach Gehör eingestellt habe. Also kein Wunder, dass sie laut ist. Aber sie ist viel lauter als die anderen 3 Zündspulen zusammen und sogar lauter als der Motor im erhöhten Leerlauf, zumindest im Innenraum. Ich glaube nicht, dass das normal ist und werde die Zündspule die nächsten Tage noch mal im Testgerät überprüfen. Aber der Wagen fährt damit super.
Vielleicht war so ein Schreihals aber auch der Grund, warum der Zündspulenkasten am Ende der Bauzeit des Model Ts in den Motorraum verbannt wurde. 

Now I have an ignition coil in the ignition coil box that behaves very conspicuously. It is loud, a real screamer. It is the ignition coil which I adjusted by ear on the 258th day on the road. So no wonder it's loud. But it is much louder than the other 3 ignition coils combined and even louder than the engine at elevated idle, at least inside. I don't think this is normal and will check the ignition coil again in the tester the next few days. But the car drives great with it.
But maybe such a screamer was the reason why the ignition coil box was banished to the engine compartment at the end of the Model T's build. 

263. Tag - Baustellenfahrt / Construction Site Drive

Es gibt nichts, was man mit dem Model T nicht machen kann. Heute muss ich eine Brandschutztür und anderes Baumaterial transportieren, damit ich zuhause weiter an der Hausrenovierung arbeiten kann. Die Tür kann man gerade so allein heben, ist aber für den T kein Problem. Sogar eine 3 Meter lange Leiste läßt sich einfacher transportieren als mit meinem modernen Auto. Just do it!
Im Baumarkt kennen sie schon den Verrückten mit dem alten Auto. Die Mitarbeiter grüßen mich schon persönlich.

There's nothing you can't do with the Model T. Today I have to transport a fire door and other building materials so that I can continue working on the house renovation at home. The door can just about be lifted on its own, but is no problem for the T. Even a 3 meter long bar is easier to transport than with my modern car. Just do it!
At the hardware store, they already know the crazy guy with the old car. The employees already greet me personally.

262. Tag - Night cruise through the city

Es ist ein Traum, wenn man nach tagelangem Ärger mit der Zündung wieder hinter dem Lenkrad einer schnurrenden Tin Lizzy sitzt.
Gibt es was schöneres, als nachts durch die regennassen Straßen der Altstadt zu cruisen? Völlig entspannt, es gibt kaum Verkehr auf der Straße. Der Wagen gleitet fast schon im Leerlauf über die Kreuzungen. Langsam an den Radfahrern vorbei fahren, sie grüßen und ich grüße zurück.
Der Geruch des frischen Regens im offenen Wagen ist durch nichts zu übertreffen. Wissen die Fahrer klimatisierter Autos, in denen sie abgeschottet von der Welt sitzen, überhaupt was sie gerade verpassen?
Ich glaube nicht und das ist gut so. 😉

It's a dream come true to be back behind the wheel of a purring Tin Lizzy after days of trouble with the ignition.
Is there anything better than cruising through the rain-soaked streets of the old town at night? Completely relaxed, there's hardly any traffic on the road. The car glides through the intersections almost at idle. Slowly passing the cyclists, they greet and I greet back.
Nothing can beat the smell of the fresh rain in the open car. Do the drivers of air-conditioned cars, in which they sit isolated from the world, even know what they are missing?
I don't think so, and that's a good thing. 😉

261. Tag - Doch wieder Holzzündspule / But again wood ignition coil

Es braucht eine leere Batterie, ein Kontaktfehler in der Zündspulenbox und eine verstellte Zündspule um ein Model T auszubremsen.
Vielleicht war aber auch die Zündspule aus Holz gar nicht wirklich ein Problem. Egal, eigentlich hatte ich sie auf der Straße wieder eingestellt und dann gegen die Zündspule mit dem Kunsstoffgehäuse ausgetauscht. Nachdem sich aber die leere Batterie als eigentlicher Fehler herausgestellt hatte, kann ich ja nochmal versuchen ob die Holzzündspule jetzt funktioniert.
It takes a dead battery, a contact failure in the ignition coil box, and a misaligned ignition coil to slow a Model T down.
But maybe the wooden ignition coil wasn't really a problem at all. No matter, I had actually readjusted it on the road and then replaced it with the ignition coil with the plastic housing. But after the empty battery had turned out to be the actual error, I can try again whether the wooden ignition coil now works.

Vermutlich ist das Model T der einzige Wagen auf der Welt, bei dem man mit laufendem Motor eine Zündspule wechseln kann.
Probably the Model T is the only car in the world where you can change an ignition coil with the engine running.

Zuerst tausche ich die Holzzündspule mit den flachen Kontakten aus.
First I replace the wooden ignition coil with the flat contacts.

Jetzt kommt die Probefahrt und .... Der Wagen fährt wie ein Rennwagen. 
Now comes the test drive and .... The car drives like a race car. 

Danach tausche ich wieder die Kunsstoffzündspule gegen zuvor ausgebaute Holzzündspule aus. Der Wagen fährt genau so gut.
Then I replace the plastic ignition coil with the previously removed wooden ignition coil. The car runs just as well.
