148. Tag - Sicherung / Fuse

Ich möchte das Model-T nicht mit modernen Bauteilen tunen, sondern den Wagen so fahren wie er 1916 konstruiert wurde. Wenn mir das nicht gefallen würde, könnte ich ja ein moderneres Auto fahren, z.B. ein Model A.
Es gibt nur wenige Ausnahmen. Da sind die für den heutigen Verkehr vorgeschriebenen Dinge, wie Blinker und Bremslicht und die 12 Volt Batterie, die gerade den kaputten Magneto ersetzt.
Und es gibt noch ein weiteres Bauteil, eine Sicherung. Ich möchte nicht, dass der Wagen irgendwann abbrennt. Da ich schon am fünften Tag einen Kabelbrand und am 141. Tag einen Kurzschluss mit Potential zum Kabelbrand hatte, denke ich dass eine Sicherung wirklich akzeptabel und notwendig ist.
Die 6 Volt Batterie habe ich mit einer normalen KFZ Sicherung abgesichert.

Die 12 Volt Batterie wollte ich mit einem Sicherungsautomaten absichern und habe einen speziellen 12 Volt Sicherungsautomaten aus China besorgt. Der hat 15€ gekostet und ist kaputt gegangen bevor ich ihn überhaupt eingebaut hatte.

Dann ist mir die Idee gekommen einen ganz normalen Sicherungsautomaten aus der Haustechnik zu verwenden. Der kostet nur 2,19€. Eine kurze Internetrecherche hat ergeben, dass diese Sicherungsautomaten tatsächlich mit 12 Volt Gleichstrom funktionieren. Eventuell ist die Lebensdauer aus technischen Gründen etwas geringer, aber ich will ja auch nicht jeden Tag einen Kabelbrand verhindern.

Ein solcher Sicherungsautomat ist eigentlich für die Montage auf einer Hutschiene gedacht, hat aber auch zwei Bohrungen und kann mit Schrauben an einer Fläche montiert werden. Man kann flexible Kabel bis 25 Quadratmillimeter am Sicherungsautomat anschließen. Der Sicherungsautomat ist gleichzeitig ein guter Hauptschalter.

I don't want to tune the Model-T with modern parts, but drive the car as it was designed in 1916. If I didn't like it, I could drive a more modern car, e.g. a Model A.
There are only a few exceptions. There are the things that are mandatory for today's traffic, like turn signals and brake lights, and the 12 volt battery that just replaced the broken magneto.
And there's another component, a fuse. I don't want the car to burn out at some point. Since I've already had a cable burn on the fifth day and a short circuit with potential for cable burn on the 141st day, I think a fuse is really acceptable and necessary.
I fused the 6 volt battery with a normal automotive fuse.

The 12 volt battery I wanted to protect with a circuit breaker and I got a special 12 volt circuit breaker from China. It cost 15€ and broke before I even installed it.

Then I had the idea to use a normal circuit breaker from the home automation. It costs only 2,19€. A short internet search showed that these circuit breakers actually work with 12 volts DC. Possibly the life span is somewhat smaller for technical reasons, but I do not want to prevent a cable fire each day.

Such a circuit breaker is actually designed to be mounted on a DIN rail, but it also has two holes and can be mounted on a surface with screws. You can connect flexible cables up to 25 square millimeters to the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker is also a good main switch.

147. Tag - Geräusche / Noises

Heute war ich auf Fehlersuche. Ich habe den Eindruck, dass der Motor beim Laufen klappert. Das hat sich ein wenig, aber nicht wirklich verbessert nachdem ich das Ventilspiel eingestellt habe. Das Klappern ist vor dem Kühler am besten zu hören. Darum habe ich vermutet, dass es vielleicht der Lüfter ist. Ich habe versucht das Geräusch im Video aufzunehmen.
Today I was troubleshooting. I have the impression that the engine rattles when running. This has improved a little, but not really after I adjusted the valve clearance. The rattling is best heard in front of the radiator. That's why I suspected it might be the fan. I tried to record the noise in the video.

Danach habe ich den Lüfterriemen abgenommen, um ein Geräusch vom Lüfter auszuschließen.
I then removed the fan belt to rule out any noise from the fan.

Hier nun der Motorlauf ohne Lüfter. Leider ist das Klappern immer noch vorhanden. Der Lüfter ist also nicht die Ursache. Ich bin mir auch nicht mehr sicher, ob sich der Motor nicht schon vorher so angehört hat.
Here now the engine run without fan. Unfortunately, the rattling is still present. So the fan is not the cause. I'm also not sure anymore if the engine didn't sound like this before.

Die Abdichtung der Zündkerze mit Teflonband funktioniert übrigens. Es gibt keine Löspritzer am 2. Zylinder mehr.
By the way, sealing the spark plug with Teflon tape works. There is no more solvent splashing on the 2nd cylinder.

146. Tag - Allein im Dorf / Allonge in the village

Heute habe ich die Ventile des 4. Zylinder eingestellt. Damit das Thema nicht auf zwei Blogs verteilt ist, habe ich es im 145. Tag zusammen gefasst.

Danach habe ich eine Probefahrt im Dunkeln durch das Dorf unternommen. Das hat viel Spaß gemacht, war aber auch ein wenig surreal. Es gab keine Leute auf der Straße und lange Zeit auch keine Autos. Ich fuhr in einem 104 Jahre alten Auto und es fühlte sich an, als wäre alles eine Kulisse. Eine Kulisse des Jahres 2020, in dem die ganze Welt stehen geblieben zu sein schien. Das hatte einen besonderen Reiz.

Today I adjusted the valves of the 4th cylinder. So that the topic is not spread over two blogs, I summarized it in the 145th day.

After that, I took a test drive in the dark in the village. It was a lot of fun, but also a little surreal. There were no people on the road and no cars for a long time. I was driving in a 104 year old car and it felt like everything was a backdrop. A backdrop of the year 2020, where the whole world seemed to have stopped. That had a special charm.

145. Tag - Ventile einstellen / Adjusting Valve

Am 118. Tag hatte ich die Ventile des ersten und zweiten Zylinders eingestellt. Die Ventile des dritten und vierten Zylinders hast ich aufgeschoben um erst neue Dichtungen und neues Silikon zu besorgen. Heute werde ich die restlichen Ventile einstellen.
Die Ventildeckel befinden sich hinter dem Ansaugkrümmer. Hinter dem linken Deckel befinden sich die Ventile des dritten und vierten Zylinders. Um diesen zu öffnen, muss man erst ein wenig Platz schaffen. Das ist aber hier keine großer Aufwand.
On the 118th day, I had adjusted the valves of the first and second cylinders. The valves of the third and fourth cylinder I have postponed to get new seals and new silicone. Today I will adjust the remaining valves.
valve covers are located behind the intake manifold. Behind the left cover are the valves of the third and fourth cylinder. To open this one, you have to make a little space first. But that is not a big effort here.

Zuerst wird die Regelstange für die Gemischeinstellung des Vergasers nach oben weggezogen.
First, the control rod for the mixture adjustment of the carburetor is pulled away upwards.

Dann wird das Blechrohr für die Luftvorwärmung des Vergasers entfernt.

Danach kommt man sehr gut an die zentrale Verschlussschraube des Ventildeckels.

Ich fange mit dem 4. Zylinder an. Hier gibt es etwas Arbeit. Das Auslassventil hat ein Spiel von 1,15mm, das Einlassventil 0,9mm. Das Ventilspiel soll zwischen 0,4 und 0,8mm betragen. Vielleicht ist das die Ursache des Motorklapperns.

Leider bin ich heute nicht fertig geworden und werde morgen daran weiterarbeiten.
I'll start with the 4th cylinder. There is some work to be done here. The exhaust valve has a clearance of 1.15mm, the intake valve 0.9mm. The valve clearance should be between 0.4 and 0.8mm. Maybe that is the cause of the engine chatter.

Unfortunately, I didn't finish today and will continue working on it tomorrow.

Nächster Tag: Zuerst habe ich mir zwei Schraubenschlüssel angefertigt mit denen ich die Ventile einstellen kann. Die Schraubenschlüssel habe ich mit dem Winkelschleifer dünner geschliffen und die Maulweite von 9mm auf 5/16'' (9,5mm) aufgefeilt.
Next day: First I made myself two wrenches with which I can adjust the valves. I ground the wrenches thinner with the angle grinder and filed the jaw width from 9mm to 5/16'' (9.5mm).

Der Deckel beim dritten und vierten Zylinder ließ sich viel besser abnehmen. Die Dichtung konnte ich wieder verwenden.
The cover on the third and fourth cylinders came off much better. I was able to use the gasket again.

Die Ventile wurden mit einstellbare Ventilstößel ausgestattet. Das ist nicht original, aber sehr hilfreich. Es gibt zwei Varianten der einstellbaren Ventile. Eine Schraube mit Kontermutter und eine Schraube ohne Kontermutter. Bei der Schraube ohne Kontermutter ist das Gewinde so schwergängig, dass die Kontermutter nicht notwendig ist. Werner hat mir beide Varianten eingebaut. Ich muss ihn mal bei Gelegenheit fragen ob er sich hier einen Spaß erlaubt hat. Macht aber nichts, so können wir hier beide Varianten direkt vergleichen. Ich habe im folgenden Bild die Einstellschrauben mit grünen Pfeile, die Kontermutter mit blauen Pfeile und die Stößel mit gelbe Pfeile markiert.

Ganz links beim Auslass des 4. Zylinders ist die Variante ohne Kontermutter eingebaut. Alle anderen Ventile haben die Variante mit Kontermutter.
The valves were equipped with adjustable valve lifters. This is not original, but very helpful. There are two variants of the adjustable valves. A screw with lock nut and a screw without lock nut. The screw without lock nut has such a heavy thread that the lock nut is not necessary. Werner has installed both versions for me. I must ask him on occasion whether he has allowed himself a joke here. But it doesn't matter, so we can compare both variants directly here. In the following picture I marked the adjusting screws with green arrows, the lock nut with blue arrows and the tappets with yellow arrows.

On the far left at the outlet of the 4th cylinder the variant without lock nut is installed. All other valves have the variant with lock nut.

Allerdings ist das Einstellen der Ventile beim Model-T kein Spaß. Der Grund ist ein Konstruktionsfehler. Die Stößel haben eine Schlüsselfläche. Diese verschwindet aber bei geschlossenen Ventil in dem Sockel. Die Schlüsselfläche sieht man auf dem Bild gerade beim Auslass des 3. Zylinders und Einlass des 4. Zylinders. Diese Konstruktion führt dazu, dass man das Ventilspiel nur bei geschlossenem Ventil messen und nur bei geöffnetem Ventil einstellen kann. Man muss also ständig an der Anlasserkurbel drehen um die Ventile zu schließen und zu öffnen. Außerdem braucht man beim Kontern der Muttern drei Schraubenschlüssel: Zwei Schraubenschlüssel um die Kontermutter gegen den Ventilstößel festzuziehen und der dritte Schraubenschlüssel um die Einstellschraube festzuhalten, damit sich das Ventilspiel nicht verstellt. Das ist der Grund, warum ich gestern mit dem Ventileinstellen nicht wurde.

However, adjusting the valves on the Model-T is no fun. The reason is a design flaw. The tappets have a wrench flat. However, this disappears into the base when the valve is closed. You can see the wrench flat on the picture just at the outlet of the 3rd cylinder and inlet of the 4th cylinder. This construction leads to the fact that one can measure the valve clearance only with closed valve and adjust only with opened valve. So you have to constantly turn the starter crank to close and open the valves. Also, you need three wrenches to tighten the nuts: two wrenches to tighten the jam nut against the valve lifter and the third wrench to hold the adjustment screw tight so the valve lash doesn't adjust. This is the reason why I did not become yesterday with the valve adjustment.

Beim Montieren der Zündkerzen habe ich die zweite Zündkerze mit Teflonband abgedichtet.

Beim Probelauf hat sich der Motor besser angehört als vor dem Einstellen der Ventile. Auch hat der Motor jetzt gefühlt eine bessere Leistung. Ich konnte im schnellen Gang mit dem Wagen jetzt Steigungen hochfahren, wo er zuvor Probleme hatte. Trotzdem gibt es immer noch das Klappern aus dem Motor. Es ist besonders laut, wenn man vor dem Kühler steht. Ich habe jetzt den Lüfter in Verdacht. Das werde ich morgen mal prüfen.

Ich habe noch eine Probefahrt gemacht. Davon berichte ich im nächsten Blog.
During the test run, the engine sounded better than before the valves were adjusted. Also, the engine now feels like it has better power. I was able to drive the car up hills in fast gear now where it had problems before. However, there is still the rattling from the engine. It is especially loud when standing in front of the radiator. I now suspect the fan. I will check that out tomorrow.

I did another test drive. I will report on this in the next blog.

144. Tag - Qualmender Motor / Smoking Engine

Als ich heute das Garagentor öffnete und das Model-T mit laufenden Motor in der Einfahrt stand bin ich etwas erschrocken. Der Auspuff qualmte stark. 
When I opened the garage door today and the Model-T was standing in the driveway with the engine running, I was a bit startled. The exhaust smoked strongly. 

Ich habe ja schon von dem zweiten Zylinder berichtet, der durch starke Verschmutzung und verölter Zündkerze aufgefallen ist. Ich habe deswegen die Zündkerzen durch neue ausgetauscht und werde das jetzt kontrollieren. Die Zündkerzenmulde des zweiten Zylinders ist auch mit der neuen Championkerze verölt.
I have already reported about the second cylinder, which was noticed due to heavy contamination and oily spark plugs. I have therefore replaced the spark plugs with new ones and will now check this. The spark plug well of the second cylinder is also oily with the new champion plug.

Man sieht es auch an den Zündkerzen. Das Gewinde der zweiten Zündkerze ist verölet, die erste Zündkerze ist trocken. Man hat mir erzählt, dass beim Model-T die Zündkerzengewinde nicht unbedingt dicht sind. Man kann das mit Teflonband abdichten. 
You can also see it on the spark plugs. The thread of the second spark plug is oily, the first spark plug is dry. I was told that on the Model-T, the spark plug threads are not necessarily tight. You can seal that with Teflon tape. 

Allerdings ist weniger das Öl in der Zündkerzenmulde das Problem, sondern viel mehr, dass überhaupt soviel Öl im Zylinder ist. Vielleicht ist ein Kolbenring gebrochen, oder ein Schaden im Zylinder. Das würde auch die starke Rauchentwicklung erklären, die ich stellenweise beobachte.

Zum Glück, qualmt der Motor nicht immer so stark.
However, it's not so much the oil in the spark plug well that's the problem, but rather that there's so much oil in the cylinder in the first place. Perhaps a piston ring is broken or there is damage in the cylinder. That would also explain the heavy smoke I'm seeing in places.

Fortunately, the engine does not always smoke so strongly.

Das ist jetzt schon neben dem kaputten Magneto der zweite Grund den Motor zu öffnen.
This is now already the second reason to open the engine besides the broken magneto.

143. Tag - Bremsentest / Brake Test

Die gestern eingebauten neuen Bremsbacken möchte ich heute testen. Nachdem die Verschleißhülse auf dem Bremsnocken auf der rechten Seite entfernt sind, bremsen beide Räder im aufgebockten Wagen ungefähr gleich früh. Allerdings rubbelt es im linken Rad. Darum nehme ich das Rad noch mal ab und schleife die die Bremstrommel nochmal mit Schleifpapier aus. 
I would like to test the new brake shoes installed yesterday today. After removing the brake camshaft sleeve on the right side, both wheels brake about the same time when the car is jacked up. However, there is rubbing in the left wheel. Therefore, I take the wheel off again and grind the brake drum again with sandpaper. 

Nach dem Abschleifen sieht man noch deutliche Einlaufspuren, aber das Rubbeln beim Bremsen ist danach nicht mehr aufgetreten.
After grinding, you can still see clear traces of running-in, but the rubbing during braking did not occur afterwards.

Die Einstellung der Bremse musste ich nicht nachstellen. Der Handbremshebel kuppelt auf halber Stellung den schnellen Gang aus und bremst, wenn der Hebel ganz nach hinten gezogen wird. Im Unterschied zu den originalen Bremsbacken, braucht man jetzt mehr Kraft um den Hebel zu betätigen. Dieser Unterschied ist auf den größeren Durchmesser der neuen Bremsbacken zurückzuführen. Die Bremskraft ist aber auch deutlich stärker geworden. Der Wagen steht jetzt auch am Berg sicher und rollt nicht weg.
Kann man den Wagen auch aus der Fahrt mit der Feststellbremse abbremsen? Der folgende Test soll es zeigen.
I did not have to readjust the brake setting. The handbrake lever disengages the fast gear at half position and brakes when the lever is pulled all the way back. Unlike the original brake shoes, it now takes more force to apply the lever. This difference is due to the larger diameter of the new brake shoes. However, the braking force has also become much stronger. The car now stands securely on hills and does not roll away.

Is it possible to brake the car with the parking brake while driving? The following test should show it.

Die Bremswirkung ist so stark, dass die Räder schnell blockieren. Blockierende Hinterräder bewirken aber ein Ausbrechen des Wagens. Darum ist die Bremskraft bei modernen Autos zu 70-80% auf der Vorderachse und nur 20-30% auf der Hinterachse um ein Blockieren der Hinterachse zu vermeiden und den Wagen in der Spur zu halten. Da das Model-T sowohl mit der Getriebebremse, als auch mit der Feststellbremse auf die Hinterräder wirkt, ist es wichtig, dass diese gut zu dosieren sind. Mit der Feststellbremse muss man das erst üben.
The braking effect is so strong that the wheels lock quickly. However, locking rear wheels cause the car to swerve. That's why the braking force on modern cars is 70-80% on the front axle and only 20-30% on the rear axle to prevent the rear axle from locking and to keep the car on track. 142. Tag - Neue Bremsen / New Brake

Es gibt wieder seltsame Geräusche in Linkskurven. Die gleichen wie am 116. Tag, als sich eine Feder der Bremsbacken löste und in der Bremstrommel geschreddert wurde. Nur heute finde ich keine mögliche Ursache in der Bremstrommel des rechten Hinterrades. Alles ist so wie es sein sollte.
There are strange noises in left turns again. The same as the 116th day when a spring of the brake shoes came loose and shredded in the brake drum. Only today I can't find a possible cause in the brake drum of the right rear wheel. Everything is as it should be.

Wenn ich aber schon das Rad demontiert habe, kann ich auch gleich die neue Bremsbacken einbauen. Diese haben im Gegensatz zu den originalen Bremsbacken Bremsbeläge und kann sie auch zum Bremsen des fahrenden Autos nutzen.

Die alten Bremsbacken haben kleine Erhebungen an der Seite, die sie auf etwas Abstand zur Bremsplatte halten. Die neuen Bremsbacken haben diese Abstandshalter nicht.
The old brake shoes have small elevations on the side that keep them at some distance from the brake plate. The new brake shoes do not have these spacers.

Da die neuen Bremsbacken aus einem Stück sind, lassen sich die Rückstellfedern gut im ausgebauten Zustand montieren.
Since the new brake shoes are in one piece, the brake shoe springs can be mounted well in the dismantled state.

Wobei die zweite Feder auf der Seite der Befestigungsschraube eigentlich keinen Sinn macht. Die Feder ist sicher nicht so stark, dass sie die Bremsbacke mit diesem kleinen Hebelarm zusammenziehen kann. Trotzdem montiere ich diese Feder. Es könnte ja sein, dass auch die neue Bremsbacke irgendwann mal an der Schraube bricht. 
Whereas the second spring on the side of the brake shoe support screw actually makes no sense. The spring is certainly not so strong that it can pull the brake shoe together with this small lever arm. Nevertheless, I mount this spring. It could be that even the new brake shoe breaks at some point at the screw. 

Die Bremsbeläge können auf die Bremsbacken genietet werden. Die Löcher für die Nieten sind schon vorhanden. Allerdings sind die Bremsbeläge hier geklebt.
The brake pads can be riveted to the brake shoes. The holes for the rivets are already present. However, the brake pads are glued here.

Die Bremsbacken werden mit einer Schraube gehalten. Die Schraube wird in die Bremsplatte eingeschraubt und von hinten mit einer Mutter gekontert.
The brake shoes are held in place with a screw. The screw is screwed into the brake plate and locked from behind with a nut.

Irgendwie kollidiert die Spannfeder mir den Befestigungsschrauben der Bremsplatte.

Als ich die Bremsbacke montiert habe, stelle ich fest, dass sie doch eine definierte Montagerichtung hat. So macht das keinen Sinn. 
When I mounted the brake shoe, I find that it does have a defined mounting direction. So that makes no sense. 

Wenn die Bremsbacke richtig herum montiert wird, ist der Schraubenkopf in der Mulde der Bremsbacke versenkt.
When the brake shoe is mounted the right way round, the screw head is recessed in the recess of the brake shoe.

Wenn das Rad demontiert ist, kommt man wunderschön an die vier Schmierstellen der Hinterachse.
When the wheel is disassembled, it is easy to get to the four lubrication points on the rear axle.

Alles ist jetzt montiert. Die Federn habe ich nochmal um 180° gedreht, damit die rechte Feder nicht an den beiden Schrauben aufliegt.

Bei der linken Bremstrommel fällt mir auf, dass der Filzring fehlt. Der kommt gleich mal auf die nächste Bestellliste.

Auf der linken Seite fehlt auch die Verschleißhülse auf dem Bremsnocken.

Auf der rechten Seite ist die Hülse vorhanden.

Darum ist es auch nicht verwunderlich, dass die rechte Bremse drei Raststellungen des Bremshebels früher blockiert. Ich habe die Hülse rechts erst mal entfernt, damit die Bremsen nicht einseitig bremsen. Die Hülsen kommen auch noch auf die Einkaufsliste.

Heute reicht die Zeit nicht mehr, aber morgen werde ich die neuen Beläge einfahren und die Bremseinstellung korrigieren. Ich bin schon gespannt ob die neuen Bremsen jetzt auch beim Fahren funktionieren.
That's why it's not surprising that the right brake locks three detent positions of the brake lever earlier. I have removed the sleeve on the right first, so that the brakes do not brake on one side. The sleeves are also still on the shopping list.

141. Tag - Kurzschluss / Short Circuit

Als ich gestern vom Baumarkt wegfahren wollte, ging plötzlich der Motor aus und lies sich nicht mehr starten. Natürlich stand ich ganz vorn in der Reihe an der Ampel und blockierte eine Grünphase lang den Verkehr. Erst als ich auf den 6 Volt Batteriekreis umschaltete, konnte ich wieder starten. Aber keine 100 Meter weiter viel das Licht aus, weil die Sicherung der Batterie durchgebrannt war. Zuhause angekommen, suchte ich sofort den Fehler und habe erst mal festgestellt, dass die 12 Volt Zusatzbatterie, welche derzeit den Magneto ersetzt und ausschließlich über den Zündungsschalter die Zündspulen betreibt wieder leer war. Das Problem hatte ich schon vor zwei Tagen. Bei der Fehlersuche ist die Sicherung des 6 Volt Batteriekreises wieder durchgebrannt und zwar genau in dem Moment, als ich die Zündung einschaltete. Damit ist der Fehler schon mal auf die Zündung eingeschränkt. Es muss ein Kurzschluss sein.
Warum aber ist die 12 Volt Batterie leer? Im Gegensatz zur 6 Volt Batterie hat sie noch keine Sicherung. Ein Kurzschluss müsste also zu einem Kabelbrand führen. Die Batterie hat noch eine Spannung von 3,97 Volt. Bei eingeschalteter Zündung, ohne dass eine Zündspule summt, hat die Batterie nur noch 0,82 Volt. Irgendwas stimmt nicht mit den Zündschalter.
When I wanted to drive away from the hardware store yesterday, the engine suddenly went out and could no longer be started. Of course, I was at the front of the line at the traffic light and blocked traffic for a green phase. Only when I switched to the 6 volt battery circuit, I could start again. But not 100 meters further on, the lights went out because the battery fuse had blown. Arrived at home, I immediately searched for the fault and first found out that the 12 volt auxiliary battery, which currently replaces the magneto and operates the ignition coils exclusively via the ignition switch, was dead again. I had this problem two days ago. While troubleshooting, the fuse of the 6 volt battery circuit blew again at the exact moment I turned on the ignition. So the fault is already limited to the ignition. It must be a short circuit.
But why is the 12 volt battery empty? Unlike the 6 volt battery, it does not have a fuse. A short circuit should lead to a cable fire. The battery still has a voltage of 3.97 volts. When the ignition is switched on, without an ignition coil humming, the battery has only 0.82 volts left. Something is wrong with the ignition switch.

Das ist der Moment, wo leichte Verzweiflung in mir aufkommt. Ich werde den Wagen nicht mehr in die Garage fahren können. Warum habe immer ich solche Probleme? Jetzt muss ich den Fehler finden und das alles im Taschenlampenlicht. 
Zuerst suche ich das wahrscheinlichste: Einen Kurzschluss im Zündschalter. Ich schraube den Deckel ab und finde erst mal nichts.
This is the moment when slight despair arises in me. I will no longer be able to drive the car into the garage. Why do I always have such problems? Now I have to find the fault and all this in the flashlight light.
First I look for the most likely thing: a short circuit in the ignition switch. I unscrew the cover and find nothing at first.

Erst als ich den Zündschalter nach links drehe finde ich den Fehler. Der Zündschalter ist mit drei Schrauben am Zündspulenkasten festgeschraubt. Eine ist locker und kann Kontakt zum beweglichen Schaltkontakt bekommen. (Der Schraubendreher zeigt die Schraube im nächsten Bild.) Bei genauerer Prüfung stelle ich fest, dass alle drei Schrauben locker sind. Ich ziehe die Schrauben fest an und schließe den Deckel. Jetzt funktioniert die Zündung wieder. Die 12 Volt Batterie muss ich erst noch laden.
Only when I turn the ignition switch to the left I find the error. The ignition switch is screwed to the ignition coil box with three screws. One is loose and can get contact to the inner lever. (The screwdriver shows the screw in the next picture.) Upon closer inspection, I find that all three screws are loose. I tighten the screws and close the cover. Now the ignition works again. I still have to charge the 12 volt battery.

Es ist schon verrückt, was es für Fehlerbilder gibt. Es ist aber auch schön, dass man viele Fehler am Model-T schnell beheben kann.

Unterwegs mit dem Model-T, kaufe ich schnell noch eine Dichtmasse. Dann kann ich in den nächsten Tagen noch das Ventilspiel des dritten und vierten Zylinders einstellen.
It's crazy what kind of error patterns there are. But it's also nice that you can quickly fix many errors on the Model-T.

On the way with the Model-T, I quickly buy another sealant. Then I can adjust the valve clearance of the third and fourth cylinders in the next few days.

140. Tag - Corona Shut Down

 Was ist die häufigst gestellte Frage im Corona Shut Down?
"Darf ich ein Foto machen?"

Aber der Reihe nach. Die zweite Welle der Pandemie kommt im Herbst und Winter, wie von allen Experten vorausgesagt. Die Ansteckungszahlen steigen. Der Wellenbrecher Shut Down Light kann zwar erst einmal den Anstieg der Ansteckungszahlen bremsen, sie verbleiben aber auf einem hohen Niveau. Wir hätten uns mehr von der Maßnahme versprochen. Als die Zahlen dann sogar weiter ansteigen, ist die Politik alarmiert. Ein kompletter Shut Down in Deutschland vom 15. Dezember bis 10. Januar wird beschlossen. Es sollen nur noch Lebensmittelgeschäfte und Geschäfte des täglichen Bedarfs offen haben. Wir haben nur noch 2 Tage um alle andere Dinge zu beschaffen. Und hier fängt die heutige T-Experiment Geschichte an:

But let's take it one step at a time. The second wave of the pandemic is coming in the fall and winter, as predicted by all the experts. The number of infections is on the rise. The Shut Down Light can slow down the increase of the number of infections for the time being, but they remain at a high level. We had expected more from the measure. When the numbers then rise even further, politicians are alarmed. A complete shutdown in Germany from December 16 to January 10 is decided. Only grocery stores and stores for daily needs are to remain open. We have only 2 days left to procure all other things. And this is where today's T-Experiment story begins:

Am Samstag hatten wir schon einen Laster voll Material für den Wohnungsausbau besorgt. Der Umbau soll bis Silvester fertig sein. Ab Mittwoch soll es einen Corona Shut Down geben. Das Material ist alles gekauft, es bleibt aber die Angst, dass nur eine Kleinigkeit fehlt und die Baustelle zum Stillstand kommt. Also beschließe ich doch noch etwas mehr Dämmmateial und andere Kleinigkeiten zu kaufen.

Als ich am Baumarkt ankomme, traue ich meinen Augen nicht. Der ganze Parkplatz ist voll. Die haben sogar die Verkehrsführung im Drive-In Bereich geädert um dem Ansturm Herr zu werden. Es sind sogar zusätzliche Kassen aufgestellt. Die Kunden werden in drei Fahrspuren kanalisiert und ich bin mitten drin.
Der Einweiser wundert sich über den Ford und sagt, dass es ein ungewöhnliches Auto sei um in den Baumarkt zu fahren. Naja soll ich das Dämmmaterial nach Hause tragen?
On Saturday, we had already procured a truck full of material for the apartment conversion. The remodeling should be finished by New Year's Eve. From Wednesday there should be a Corona Shut Down. The material is all bought, but there remains the fear that only a small thing is missing and the construction site comes to a standstill. So I decide to buy some more insulation material and other small things.

When I arrive at the hardware store, I can't believe my eyes. The whole parking lot is full. They have even changed the traffic routing in the drive-in area to cope with the rush. There are even additional cash registers set up. The customers are channeled into three lanes and I am in the middle of it.

The attendant is surprised about the Ford and says that it is an unusual car to drive into the hardware store. Well, should I carry the insulation material home?

Schon in der Schlange werden viele Fotos vom Model-T gemacht. Ich komme auch ungewöhnlich schnell in die Halle und habe das Glück, dass ich im Gang für Dämmmaterial fast alleine bin. Leider ist das Styropor ausverkauft. Ich kann nur einen Pack Glaswolle mitnehmen. Der füllt den Wagen schon gut aus. Ich hätte aber mit offenem Verdeck auch drei davon mitnehmen können.
Already in the queue, many photos are taken of the Model-T. I also get into the hall unusually quickly and am lucky to be almost alone in the aisle for insulation material. Unfortunately, the Styrofoam is sold out. I can only take one pack of glass wool. That already fills the car nicely. But I could have taken three of them with the top down.

An der Kasse werde ich von vier Leuten gefragt, ob sie ein Foto machen dürfen. Sogar von der Kassiererin. Das ist also die meistgestellte Frage im Corona Shut Down. :-) 
Die meisten fragen aber nicht, sondern machen einfach Fotos.

At the checkout, four people ask me if they can take a picture. Even from the cashier. So this is the most asked question in the Corona Shut Down. :-) 

But most do not ask, but simply take photos.

Mit Zufriedenheit stelle ich fest, dass die Kühlwassertemperatur auch bei den langen Wartezeiten mit laufendem Motor moderat bleiben. Der neue Kühler tut seinen Job.
I am pleased to note that the coolant temperature remains moderate even during the long waiting periods with the engine running. The new radiator does its job.

Als ich dann nach Hause fahren will, stirbt der Motor ab und läßt sich niche mehr starten. Ich bin der vorderste an der Ampel. Aber diese Geschichte werde ich morgen erzählen.
