122. Tag - Unboxing Snyders Antique Auto Parts delivery

Heute sind die Ersatzteile von Snyders angekommen. Eine wirklich große Lieferung, die mich über die Urlaubstage am Jahresende beschäftigen wird. 
Was mich immer wieder begeistert, ist wie schnell Snyders Antique Auto Parts liefert. Das hat jetzt gerade mal 3 Tage von Bestellung in USA bis Lieferung in Deutschland gedauert. Die Verfügbarkeit und schnelle Lieferung von Ersatzteilen ist eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für die Alltagstauglichkeit eines Autos. Vielen Dank dafür.
Ich fühle mich wie ein 5 jähriger Junge am Weihnachtsabend und lege alles schön geordnet auf den Boden. Ein Quadratmeter neue Ersatzteile für das Model-T.

I feel like a 5 year old boy on Christmas Eve and put everything nicely organized on the floor. One square meter of new spare parts for the Model-T.

Dann prüfe ich ob alles geliefert wurde. Was für ein Schreck, als ich feststelle, dass die Lederriemen für das Verdeck und die Lüfterriemen fehlen. Ich durchwühle noch mal das Verpackungspapier. Nichts. Die Teile stehen aber auf dem Lieferschein.

Ich schaue noch mal in den Karton. Und ja, die Teile stecken unten fest.
Alles ist gut. Jetzt kann ich mit den Reparaturen loslegen. 

Then I check if everything was delivered. What a shock when I notice that the leather straps for the hood and the fan belts are missing. I rummage through the packing paper again. Nothing. But the parts are on the delivery bill.

I take another look into the box. And yes, the parts are stuck at the bottom.

Everything is fine. Now I can start with the repairs. 

Heute ist übrigens schon das erste Drittel der 365 Tage Model-T erreicht. Ich freue mich auf die weiteren 243 Tage.

By the way, today is already the first third of the 365 days of Model-T. I am looking forward to the next 243 days.

121. Tag - Service Handbuch / Service Manual

Das Ford Service Buch in Deutscher Fassung von 1927 ist ein hilfreiches und unterhaltsames Buch. Man sollte das Service Buch eines über 100 jähre alten Autos durchgelesen haben um die Technik und den Umgang damit verstehen zu können. Viele Diskussionen am Stammtisch erscheinen in einem völlig anderen Licht, wenn man den zeitgemäßen Kontext berücksichtigt. Ein Beispiel: Die Diskussionen, welche Ölsorte man verwenden sollte, sind oft unendlich lange. Es gibt viele Oldtimer Besitzer die der Meinung sind, dass man unbedingt ein Einbereichsöl wie damals üblich verwenden sollte. Das Argument hierbei ist, dass diese Öle die kleinen Partikel nicht in der Schwebe halten und das bei einem Motor ohne Ölfilter von Vorteil ist. Das hört sich erst mal logisch an. Oft wird dabei aber nicht berücksichtigt, dass sich dann diese Partikel in irgendwelchen Ecken des Motors absetzen. Darum war es damals üblich, nach einem Ölwechsel den Motor mit Petroleum zu spülen. Wer macht das aber heute?
Das Buch ist unterhaltsam, da es einen Einblick in die damaligen Umstände gibt.

The Ford Service Book in German version from 1927 is a helpful and entertaining book. You should have read the service book of a more than 100 year old car to understand the technology and how to use it. Many discussions at the regulars' table appear in a completely different light when you consider the contemporary context. An example: The discussions about which type of oil to use are often endless. There are many vintage car owners who think that you should definitely use a single-grade oil as was customary at the time. The argument here is that these oils do not keep the small particles in suspension and this is an advantage in an engine without an oil filter. This sounds logical at first. But often there is no consideration of the fact, that then these particles will settle in any corner of the engine. That's why it was common at that time to flush the engine with petroleum after an oil change. But who does that today?
The book is entertaining because it gives an insight into the circumstances of that time.

119 Tag - Große Einkaufsliste / Big Shopping List

Die nächsten Wochen habe ich viel vor und brauche dafür viele Teile. Hier ist die Einkaufsliste.
Es gibt alle Teile um die Vorderachsträger zu überholen, am nervige Lüfter wird gearbeitet, ich möchte die Rückleuchte auf zwei elektrische Lichter und das originale Rücklicht mit Petroleum umbauen, der Bremslichtschalter wird neu gemacht, alle Lederriemen am Verdeck werden erneuert, der Blinkerschalter muss besser an der Lenksäule befestigt werden und viele Teile die ich auf Lager legen werde.
I have a lot of plans for the next weeks and need many parts for it. Here is the shopping list.
There are all parts to overhaul the front axle carriers, the annoying fan is being worked on, I want to change the rear light to two electric lights and the original rear light with kerosene, the brake light switch will be made new, all leather straps on the top will be renewed, the turn signal switch has to be fixed better on the steering column and many parts I will put in stock.

118. Tag - Ventile einstellen / Adjusting valves

Heute habe ich die Ventile des ersten und zweiten Zylinders eingestellt. Klar, wollte ich alle einstellen, aber es hat zu lange gedauert. Der Deckel ist schnell abmontiert. Ich musste aber versuchen die Papierdichtung nicht zu zerstören, da ich keine Ersatzdichtung vorrätig habe. Die Einkaufsliste wird immer länger.
Dann erst mal die Zündkerzen herausnehmen. 

Today I adjusted the valves of the first and second cylinder. Sure, I wanted to adjust them all, but it took too long. The cover is quickly removed. But I had to try not to destroy the paper seal, because I don't have a spare seal in stock. The shopping list is getting longer and longer.

Then first take out the spark plugs. 

Ich habe immer noch das Problem, dass es beim zweiten Zylinder irgend eine Undichtigkeit gibt. Die Mulde der Zündkerze ist verölt. Vielleicht ist es ja auch die Zündkerze selbst. Ich werde einfach mal die Zündkerze des ersten und zweiten Zylinders vertauschen und beobachten was dann passiert.
I still have the problem that there is some kind of leak on the second cylinder. The hollow of the spark plug is oiled. Maybe it is the spark plug itself. I'll just swap the spark plug of the first and second cylinder and see what happens then.

Die Ventile sind mit einer Verstellschraube nachgerüstet. Der Sechskant unter dem Federteller ist die Einstellschraube und der untere Sechkant ist die Feststellmutter oder Kontermutter. Der Einstellvorgang ist etwas aufwändiger, als bei anderen Motoren. Der Ventilstößel hat zwei gegenüberliegende Flächen für einen 3/8 Zoll Gabelschlüssel. Diese Schlüsselfläche kommen aber erst aus dem unteren Sockel heraus, wenn das Ventil geöffnet ist. Dann kann man die Feststellmutter gegen den Ventilstößel kontern. Bei geöffnetem Ventil kann man aber das Spiel nicht messen. Das bedeutet, dass man drei Arbeitsschritte braucht:
- Motor in Position bringen in der die Ventile geschlossen sind und das Spiel messen und nachstellen.
- Motor drehen bis das Ventil geöffnet ist und die Feststellmutter gegen den Ventilstößel kontern.
- Motor weiterdrehen und nochmal das Spiel nachmessen.
The valves are retrofitted with an adjustable tappets. The hexagon below the valve spring retainer is the adjusting screw and the lower hexagon is the lock nut. The adjustment process is somewhat more complex than with other engines. The valve tappet has two opposite faces for a 3/8 inch open-end wrench. However, these wrench surfaces only come out of the lower socket when the valve is open. Then you can lock the locking nut against the valve tappet. But you cannot measure the clearance when the valve is open. This means that three steps are required:

- Move the engine to the position where the valves are closed and measure and adjust the clearance.

- Turn the engine until the valve is open and lock the locking nut against the valve tappet.

- Continue turning the engine and measure the clearance again.

Eine einfache Methode die richtige Stellung zum Messen des Ventilspiels zu finden ist übrigens den Motor so zu stellen, dass die zugehörige Zündkerze bei später Zündeinstellung funkt. Das ist jetzt wieder ein Vorteil der Summerzündung.
A simple method to find the correct position for measuring the valve clearance is to adjust the engine so that the corresponding spark plug sparks when the ignition is adjusted later. This is now again an advantage of the buzzer ignition.

Aber es gibt offenbar kein neuer Arbeitsschritt ohne neue Probleme. Hier waren es sogar drei.

- Keine Papierdichtung vorrätig.
- Silikon zum sicheren Abdichten ist in der Tube ausgehärtet
- Kein 3/8 Zoll Gabelschlüssel im Werkzeugkasten.
Die Papierdichtung konnte ich nach vorsichtigem entfernen des alten Silikons wiederverwenden und aus der ausgehärteten Tube konnte ich mit dem Schraubstock noch etwas frisches Silikon herauspressen. Dabei ist die Tube seitlich aufgerissen und etwas verwendbares Silikon kam heraus. Übrigens eine gute Gelegenheit sich mit der aufgeplatzten Tube in den Finger zu schneiden.
But apparently there is no new work step without new problems. Here there were even three.

- No paper seal in stock.

- Silicone for safe sealing is cured in the tube

- No 3/8 inch wrench in the toolbox.

The paper gasket I could reuse after carefully removing the old silicone and I could press out some fresh silicone from the cured tube with the vice. The tube was torn open on the side and some usable silicone came out. By the way a good opportunity to cut your finger with the broken tube.

Der fehlende Gabelschlüssel war schon ein größeres Thema. Ein 10mm Schlüssel ist zu groß und ein 9mm Schlüssel zu klein. 3/8 Zoll sind halt 9,4mm. Außerdem sind die Gabelschlüssel zu dick für die Schlüsselfläche des Ventilstößels. Ich habe entschieden einen 9mm Gabelschlüssel zu opfern und ihn passend zu feilen. Das hat schon ganz gut funktioniert, ich brauche aber noch einen zweiten Gabelschlüssel.
The missing open-end wrench was already a major issue. A 10mm wrench is too big and a 9mm wrench too small. 3/8 inches are 9.4mm. Also the open-end wrenches are too thick for the wrench flat of the valve tappet. I have decided to sacrifice a 9mm wrench and file it to fit. This worked quite well, but I still need a second wrench.

 

Ich besorge jetzt erst mal das notwendige Werkzeug, bevor ich die Ventile des dritten und vierten Zylinders einstellen.
Im übrigen hatten die Ventile zum Teil ein größeres Ventilspiel als 0,8mm. Vorgegeben sind 0,4 bis 0,8mm.
Die Ventile könnten also tatsächlich der Grund des klappenden Motorgeräusches sein.
I will now get the necessary tools before I adjust the valves of the third and fourth cylinder.

By the way, some of the valves had a bigger valve clearance than 0.8mm. The default is 0.4 to 0.8mm.
So the valves could be the reason for the engine noise.

117. Tag - Ventile einstellen / Adjusting valves

Das Model-T ist jetzt vorbereitet, um das klappernde Geräusch im Motorlauf zu suchen. Ich vermute, dass es nur die Ventile sind, die neu eingestellt werden müssen. Ich hoffe, dass ich morgen die Ursache finden werde.
The Model-T is now prepared to search for the rattling noise when the engine is running. I suspect that it is only the valves that need to be readjusted. I hope that I will find the cause tomorrow.

116. Tag - Bremsfeder / Brake Shoe Springs

Es gibt seltsame Geräusche beim Fahren. Es ist ein schabendes Geräusch, das man besonders in Kurven hört. Das macht mir Sorgen und ich versuche die Ursache zu finden.
Ich bocke den Wagen auf und untersuche die einzelnen Räder. Die Vorderräder sind unauffällig.
There are strange noises while driving. It is a scraping noise that you hear especially in curves. That worries me and I try to find the cause.
I jack up the car and examine the individual wheels. The front wheels are inconspicuous.

Am linken Hinterrad fällt mir auch nichts auf. Aber beim letzten, dem rechten Hinterrad stimmt etwas nicht.
I don't notice anything on the left rear wheel either. But on the last one, the right rear wheel, something is wrong.

Das Rad ist ja schnell demontiert. Zuerst wird die Messingkappe runtergeschraubt und die Mutter mit dem Splint gelöst. Dann kann man das Rad herunterziehen, wenn es nicht auf dem Konus klemmt. Das tut es aber.
The wheel is quickly dismantled. First the brass hub cap is screwed down and the castle nut with the cotter pin is loosened. Then you can pull the wheel down if it does not stick on the cone. But it does.

Macht nichts, dafür gibt es einen speziellen Abzieher.
Never mind, there is a special puller for this.

Und schon sieht man die Ursache des Geräusches. Eine Bremsfeder hat sich gelöst und wurde in der Bremstrommel zermalmt.
And you can already see the cause of the noise. A brake spring has come loose and was crushed in the brake drum.

Was ein Glück, dass ich die Federn schon neu gekauft habe. Sie ist schnell eingebaut. Zuerst habe ich versucht sie mit einem Schraubendreher auf die Bremsbacken zu hebeln. Dabei ist sie zweimal weggeflogen. Es ist viel einfacher die Feder und die Bremsbacken außerhalb der Bremstrommel zu montieren und dann beides zusammen in die Bremstrommel einzusetzen.
What a luck that I have already bought the springs new. It is quickly installed. First I tried to lever them onto the brake shoes with a screwdriver. Thereby it flew away twice. It is much easier to mount the spring and the brake shoes outside the brake drum and then put both together into the brake drum.

Vermutlich, war die heruntergesprungene Feder auch der Grund, warum die Handbremse beim Fahren immer gequietscht hatte. Ich bin gespannt ob das so war.
Probably, the spring was also the reason why the handbrake had always squeaked while driving. I am curious if that was the case.

115. Tag - LED Scheinwerfer / LED Headlights

Heute habe ich den Spannungswandler eingebaut. Er wandelt die 6 Volt auf 12 Volt. Damit funktionieren die LED Lampen. Ich muss jetzt zwar die Scheinwerfer einzel schalten, kann damit aber nachts  wesentlich länger fahren. Allerdings sieht das Licht doch wesentlich anders aus. Es hat einen kälteren Farbton und man erkennt deutlich die einzelnen LED Punkte. Naja, bis der Magneto repariert ist kann man das so lassen.
Today I installed the voltage transformer. It converts the 6 Volt to 12 Volt. So the LED lamps work. Now I have to switch the headlights individually, but I can drive much longer at night. But the light looks much different. It has a colder color tone and you can clearly see the individual LED points. Well, until the magneto is repaired you can leave it like this.

114. Tag - Die Werkstatt hat jetzt Licht / The workshop now has light

Alle Deckenleuchten der Werkstatt sind jetzt angeschlossen. Das ist jetzt kein spektakulärer Blog-Bericht, aber notwendig, da die Werkstatt für das Model-T und damit für den Blog wichtig ist und es jetzt abends immer früh dunkel wird. :-)
All ceiling lights of the workshop are now connected. This is not a spectacular blog report now, but necessary, because the workshop is important for the Model-T and therefore for the blog and it is getting dark early in the evening. :-)

Trotzdem ist es ein interessantes Thema in Bezug auf die Alltagstauglichkeit des Model-Ts. Ist es normal, dass man genau soviel reparieren muss, wie man fährt? Im Moment ist es zumindest so. Trotzdem glaube ich nicht, dass es typisch für das Model-T ist, sondern dass ich es mit einem 104 Jahre alten Auto zu tun habe, welches halt eben einen Wartungsstau hat. Wenn das so ist, sollte es mit der Zeit immer besser werden. Ich freue mich schon drauf.
Nevertheless, it is an interesting topic with regard to the Model-T's suitability for everyday use. Is it normal that you have to repair as much as you drive? At least it is at the moment. However, I don't think it's typical for the Model-T, but I think I'm dealing with a 104 year old car that has a maintenance jam. If that is the case, it should get better and better over time. I am looking forward to it.

Trotzdem werde ich meine Werkstatt noch weiter auf die Bedürfnisse des Model-Ts ausrüsten. Dann macht das Reparieren ja vielleicht genau soviel Spaß wie das Fahren.
Nevertheless, I will continue to equip my workshop to the needs of the Model-T. Then maybe repairing will be just as much fun as driving.

113. Tag - LED Lampen / LED Lights

LED Lampe kaufen, Scheinwerfer öffnen, LED rein, Scheinwerfer schließen und schon kann ich 3mal so lang mit Batteriestrom in der Nacht fahren. So habe ich mir das vorgestellt am 111. Tag des Blogs. 
Es war aber nichts. Dunkel war es. Sehr, sehr dunkel.
Buy LED lamp, open headlight, put LED in, close headlight and I can drive 3 times as long with battery power at night. This is how I imagined it on the 111th day of the blog.
But it was nothing. It was dark. Very, very dark.

Meine erste Vermutung war, dass die LED entgegen der Spezifikation (6-30 Volt) nicht mit 6 Volt funktioniert. Das Problem hatte ich schon bei meinem Motorrad.

Ein zweites Problem könnte auch sein, dass die LED falsch angeschlossen habe. Also habe ich heute die die LED Lampe durchgemessen.
Dass ein China-Produkt nicht der eigenen Spezifikation der Betriebsspannung entspricht, habe ich schon überwunden. Was ich jetzt aber festgestellt habe schießt den Vogel ab.
My first guess was that contrary to the specification (6-30 volts) the LED does not work with 6 volts.  I already had this problem with my motorcycle.

A second problem could also be that the LED was connected incorrectly. So I measured the LED lamp today. 

I have already overcome the fact that a China product does not correspond to the own specification of the operating voltage.But what I have found now, however, shoots the bird (Can you say that in English so? I mean it is crazy.)

Mein Testaufbau ist etwas improvisiert. Ich habe ein 18 Volt Netzteil und ein Draht zur Verfügung. Der Draht verbinde ich mit dem innenliegenden Stecker Pluspol.

Meine Erwartung ist, dass
- die LED über die beide Kontakte funktioniert.
- die Polarität keine Rolle spielen sollte. Normalerweise haben LED eine Polarität, aber der Sockel hat die beiden Stifte auf der gleichen Höhe und kann darum um 180° gedreht in zwei Positionen eingebaut werden. Das bedeutet, dass der Sockel keine definierte Polarität ermöglicht.

- der Sockel keine Funktion haben sollte, also nicht mit dem Minus-Kontakt verbunden ist. Wenn das so wäre, würde man in der falschen Einbauposition einen Kurzschluss verursachen.
My test setup is somewhat improvised. I have an 18 Volt power supply and a wire available. I connect the wire to the inside plug plus pole.

My expectation is that 

- the LED with the two contacts is working. 

- the polarity should not matter. Normally LEDs have one polarity, but the base has the two pins at the same height and can therefore be installed in two positions turned by 180°. This means that the socket does not allow a defined polarity.

- the socket should have no function, i.e. it is not connected to the minus contact. If this were the case, you would cause a short circuit in the wrong installation position.

Die LED funktioniert nicht wenn man sie über die beiden Kontakte anschließt. Unabhängig von der Polarität.
The LED does not work if you connect it via the two contacts. Regardless of the polarity.

Die LED funktioniert mit dem Pluspol auf einem Kontakt und dem Minuspol auf dem Sockel. Das ist schon mal nicht schlecht.
The LED works with the positive pole on one contact and the negative pole on the base. This is not bad.

Mit dem Pluspol auf dem anderen Kontakt funktioniert die LED nicht. 
With the positive pole on the other contact the LED will not work. 

Das bedeutet, dass der eine Kontakt gar keine Funktion hat. Zur Sicherheit überprüfe ich noch ob die Kontakte miteinander oder die Kontakte mir dem Sockel verbunden sind. Das ist nicht der Fall.
This means that the one contact has no function at all. To be on the safe side I check if the contacts are connected to each other or to the socket. This is not the case.

Dieser Aufbau der LED entspricht nicht der Funktion des Sockels. Der Pluspol der LED ist nicht markiert und es gibt auch kein Bedienungsanleitung dazu. Das ist sehr ärgerlich.

Das Positive ist, dass die LED kein Kurzschluss verursachen kann und mit einer höheren Spannung und der richtigen Einbauposition auch funktionieren kann.

Der nächste Schritt ist der Einbau eines Spannungswandlers (6 Volt auf 12 Volt). Damit sollte es dann funktionieren.
This construction of the LED does not correspond to the function of the socket. The positive pole of the LED is not marked and there are no operating instructions. This is very annoying.

The positive thing is that the LED can't cause a short circuit and can also work with a higher voltage and the correct installation position.

The next step is to install a voltage converter (6 volts to 12 volts). With this it should work then.

112. Tag - Alte Zündspule / Old Coil

Im Moment bin ich sehr mit dem Ausbau der Wohnung beschäftigt und konnte noch nicht an die Ventileinstellung des Motors gehen. So beschäftige ich mich gerade mit den kleinen Dingen des Model-Ts. Hier ist die alte Zündspule, die zwar noch einen Zündfunken gebracht hatte, der aber etwas schwach und immer wieder unterbrochen war. Ich wollte die Spule zur Reparatur bei Michael Deichmann schicken und habe sie erst mal durchgemessen.

Der obere (auf dem Bild rechte) Anschluss ist die Primärwicklung und der untere (auf dem Bild linke) Anschluss die Sekundärwicklung.
The upper (right in the picture) terminal is the primary winding and the lower (left in the picture) terminal is the secondary winding.

Der untere Kontakt ist der Minuspol.
The lower contact is the negative pole.

Die Primärwicklung hat Durchgang und einen Widerstand von 5 Ohm.
The primary winding has continuity and a resistance of 5 Ohm.

Leider hat die Sekundärwicklung keinen Durchgang. Trotzdem funktioniert die Spule noch. Das wurde so erklärt, dass der Spulendraht der Hochspannungsspule unterbrochen ist, so dass man zwar keinen Durchgang mehr messen kann, aber der Strom noch überspringen kann.
Unfortunately the secondary winding has no electrical continuity. Nevertheless the coil still works. This was explained by the fact that the coil wire of the high voltage coil is broken, so that one cannot measure any more continuity, but the current can still skip.

Damit ist die Zündspule leider nicht mehr zu reparieren, da man alle Teile austauschen kann, nur nicht die eigentliche Spule.

So the ignition coil is unfortunately no longer repairable, because you can replace all parts, except the actual coil.
