81. Tag - Fehlzündungen / Backfires

Heute hatte ich zwei besondere Begegnungen mit Model-T interessierten Leuten. Bevor ich losfuhr, kam ein Nachbar vorbei. Der ältere Herr arbeitete 25 Jahre im Fordwerk Saarlouis. Daraus entwickelte sich ein Gespräch über die Entwicklung der Autos in den letzten 100 Jahren.
Today I had two special encounters with Model-T interested people. Before I left, a neighbor came by. The elderly gentleman worked for 25 years in the Fordwerk Saarlouis. From this a conversation developed about the development of cars in the last 100 years.

Danach bin ich nach Illingen gefahren. Ein Ort ca 20km von Saarbrücken entfernt. Normalerweise nehme ich die Autobahn dorthin. Heute habe ich gedacht, dass ich die Landstraße nehme und zwar ohne GPS-Navi. Ich wollte mal sehen ob das noch funktioniert. Die Strecke habe ich mir vorher auf der Karte angeschaut. Auf der Hinfahrt ging alles gut. Die Rückfahrt wurde ein Desaster. Um Illingen sind auf der Landstraße nur die kleinen Orte ausgeschildert, deren Namen ich vorher nie bewußt gehört habe. Die mir bekannten Orte waren nur auf den Autobahnschilder zu finden. Naja in der Region war ich schon lange nicht mehr oder habe ich es nach 20 Jahren GPS Nutzung einfach verlernt?
Afterwards I drove to Illingen. A town about 20km away from Saarbrücken. Normally I take the highway there. Today I thought I would take the country road without GPS navigation. I wanted to see if it still works. I looked at the route on the map before. On the way there everything went well. The return trip was a disaster. Around Illingen there are only the small towns on the road that are signposted, whose names I never heard before. The places I knew were only to be found on the highway signs. Well, I haven't been in this region for a long time or have I simply forgotten it after 20 years of using GPS? 

Seit gestern läuft der Motor nicht mehr richtig. Da der Zylinderkopf um die zweite Zündkerze mit Öl verschmutzt war, habe ich vor der Fahrt die Zündkerze nachgezogen und den Zylinderkopf gereinigt. 
Since yesterday the engine has not been running properly. Because the cylinder head around the second spark plug was soiled with oil, I retightened the spark plug before driving and cleaned the cylinder head. 

Leider war die undichte Zündkerze nicht die Ursache für den schlechten Motorlauf. Auf den 90km heute lief der Motor immer schlechter. Der Motor hatte einen deutlichen Leistungsverlust und viele Fehlzündungen. Ich habe unentwegt die Gemischschraube des Vergasers nachgestellt - kein Erfolg. Jeder Berg war eine Tortur und Berge gibt es dort viele. 

Zuhause bin ich dann auf Fehlersuche gegangen.
- Visueller Kabelcheck --> OK
- Batterie Spannung mit und ohne Motorlauf: 6V --> OK

- Schnelltest der Zündung durch Überbrückung der Zündkerze. Dabei wird ein isolierter Schraubendreher zwischen den Anschluss der Zündkerze und Zylinderkopf gehalten. Wenn man einen Zündfunken sieht ist das ein gutes Zeichen. Wenn es keinen Zündfunken gibt, hat man das Problem fast gefunden. Alle  Zündkabel hatten einen Funken. --> Kein Hinweis.

- Zündkerzen herausnehmen und Kerzenbild anschauen. Die erste und dritte Zündkerze waren stark verrußt, die zweite sehr stark verrußt und die vierte Zündkerze war relativ sauber.

Unfortunately the leaking spark plug was not the cause for the bad engine running. On the 90km today the engine ran worse and worse. The engine had a significant loss of power and many backfires. I constantly readjusted the mixture screw of the carburetor - no success. Every mountain was an ordeal and there are many mountains. 

At home I went troubleshooting.

- Visual cable check --> OK

- Battery voltage with and without engine running: 6V --> OK

- Quick ignition test by bridging the spark plug. An insulated screwdriver is held between the connection of the spark plug and cylinder head. If you see an ignition spark this is a good sign. If there is no spark, you have almost found the problem. All ignition cables had a spark. --> No hint.

- Take out the spark plugs and look at the plug picture. The first and third spark plug were heavily sooty, the second very heavily sooty and the fourth spark plug was relatively clean.

Der zweite Zylinder ist auch am Zündkerzengewinde stark verschmutzt. Ich habe eine Probe des Schmutzes vom Kolbenboden entnommen. Die anderen Zylinder sind sauberer. Vielleicht hat das was mit der undichten Zündkerze zu tun? 
The second cylinder is also very dirty at the spark plug thread. I took a sample of the dirt from the piston crown. The other cylinders are cleaner. Maybe this has something to do with the leaking spark plug?

Nach dem Säubern der Zündkerzen habe ich den Zündfunken überprüft. Die Zündkerze des dritten Zylinders hatte einen schwachen Zündfunken,  der auch immer wieder kurz stoppte. Hierzu muss man wissen, das das Model-T eine ungewöhnliche Zündanlage hat. Jede Zündkerze hat ihre eigene Zündspule. Die Zündspule haben integrierte Unterbrecher, die nicht nur einen Funken erzeugen. Solange die Zündspule eingeschaltet ist, erzeugt die Zündkerze eine Folge von Zündfunken. Beim Öffnen des Spulenkastens wird ersichtlich, dass  tatsächlich die Zündspule des dritten Zylinders die letzte alte Spule ist. Alle anderen hatte ich schon ersetzt. Diese eine Zündspule funktioniert zwar, ist aber in einem schlechten visuellen Zustand und ihr Summierten hat eine viel höhere Frequenz als die anderen Spulen.  
After cleaning the spark plugs I checked the ignition spark. The spark plug of the third cylinder had a weak ignition spark, which also stopped briefly again and again. You have to know that the Model-T has an unusual ignition system. Each spark plug has its own ignition coil. The ignition coils have integrated breakers, which do not only produce a spark. As long as the ignition coil is on, the spark plug produces a sequence of sparks. When opening the coil box, you can see that in fact the ignition coil of the third cylinder is the last old coil. I had already replaced all others. This one ignition coil does work but is in a bad visual condition and its summed up frequency is much higher than the other coils.

Im direkten Vergleich sieht man auch, dass die defekte Spule eine ältere Konstruktion ist.

Vor der Probefahrt habe ich noch das Provisorium entfernt, mit dem ich die klappernde Scheibe ruhig gestellt habe.

Ach ja, die zweite interessante Begegnung heute. Ein älterer Herr auf einem E-Bike. 

Die erste Frage: "Wie alt ist der Wagen?" 

Ich:" Baujahr 1916"

Die zweite Frage: "Wofür ist das Zahnrad am vorderen Rad?"

Ich musste lachen: "Sie halten sich genau an die Regeln."

Er: "Wie meinen sie das?"

Ich: " Die erste Frage ist immer das Baujahr, die zweite Frage betrifft das Zahnrad. Das Zahnrad gehört zum Tachometer."

Er: "Die vordere Achse ist sehr leicht konstruiert. Die Verwendung nur einer Blattfeder pro Achse erlauben es den Rädern unabhängig voneinander stark einzufedern."

Ich: "Sie unterscheiden sich von den üblichen Fragenden. Haben sie eine technische Ausbildung?"

Er: "Maschinenbau. Ich bin Professor im Ruhestand."

Es wurde eine lange Unterhaltung. :-)

Oh yes, the second interesting encounter today. An older man on an e-bike. 

The first question: "How old is the car?" 

I:" Year of manufacture is 1916"

The second question: "What is the cogwheel on the front wheel for?

I had to laugh. "You follow the rules to the letter."

He said, "What do you mean?"

Me: " The first question is always the year of construction, the second question is about the cogwheel. The cogwheel goes with the speedometer."

He: "The front axle is very light. The use of only one leaf spring per axle allows the wheels to spring strongly independently of each other."

Me: "They are different from the usual questioners. Do you have a technical education?"

He: "Mechanical engineering. I am a retired professor."

It became a long conversation. :-)

80. Tag - Der Winter naht / Winter is coming

Der Winter naht. Mit dem Kühlerschutz beim Auto ist es wie mit der Rettungsweste beim Segeln. Kümmere dich drum, wenn du das erste mal darüber nachdenkst, sonst ist es zu spät. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, dass der Kühlerschlauch immer noch undicht ist.
Winter is coming. With the radiator antifreeze on a car it is like with a life jacket on a sailboat. Take care of it the first time you think about it, otherwise it's too late. I noticed that the radiator hose is still leaking.

Davor habe ich mich aber um das hintere Bodenbrett gekümmert. Die originalen Bretter sind wunderschön. Die kommen nach dem Winter auch wieder rein. Bis das Problem mit dem Magneto gelöst ist, möchte ich aber eine zweite Batterie für die Lichter haben. Die originale Batteriehalterung habe ich noch nicht bekommen können, darum möchte ich einen Kasten unter das Bodenbrett schrauben. Und das möchte ich nicht mit den originalen Bretter machen.
Die 4 Bretter liegen einfach in einem Rahmen und werden mit zwei Leisten links und rechts fixiert. Eine schöne Lösung. Leider ist eine Leiste gebrochen. Die habe ich auch noch nachgebaut, muss mit dem Einbau aber warten bis der Lack getrocknet ist.
But before that I took care of the rear floorboard. The original boards are beautiful. They will come back in after the winter. But until the problem with the magneto is solved, I want to have a second battery for the lights. I haven't been able to get the original battery holder yet, so I want to screw a box under the bottom board. And I don't want to do that with the original boards.
The 4 boards just lie in a frame and are fixed with two strips left and right. A nice solution. Unfortunately one of the strips is broken. I made a copy of it, but I have to wait until the paint is dry.

So sieht das ohne Bodenbretter aus. Die Batterie soll auf die linke Seite zwischen die Kardanwelle und dem Rahmenlängsträger, dort wo man das Laub sieht.

So sieht das jetzt aus. Leider ist die Ästhetik verloren gegangen, dafür kann ich aber jetzt eine Klappe für die Batterie einbauen. Fortsetzung folgt.

79. Tag - Leergut / Empty Bottles

Heute habe ich zuerst die Bodenbretter fertiggestellt. Die Bilder habe ich im Blog von Gestern gepostet. Während ich zwischen Wagen und Säge hin und her renne um das Brett passgenau herzustellen, habe ich die Batterie geladen. So lange der Magneto nicht funktioniert, muss ich jede Gelegenheit nutzen ein Ladegerät anzuschließen.
Today I finished the floorboards first. I posted the pictures in yesterday's blog. While I am running back and forth between the car and the saw to make the board fit exactly, I charged the battery. As long as the magneto is not working I have to use every opportunity to connect a charger.

Als es dunkel wurde, habe ich die Cowl Lights angezündet. Einfach nur weil ich sie schön finde. Außerdem verbreiten sie einen Petroleumduft um den Wagen und werfen ein interessantes Licht auf 100 Jahre technische Entwicklung. Die Öllampen muss ich nicht bei jeder Gelegenheit auffüllen, wie die Akkus der modernen Geräte. Allein heute habe ich 6 verschiedene Geräte zum Aufladen ans Netz gehängt. Irgendwie hat man sich schon daran gewöhnt.
When it got dark I lit the cowl lights. Simply because I find them beautiful. They also spread a petroleum scent around the car and cast an interesting light on 100 years of technical development. I don't have to refill the oil lamps at every opportunity, like the batteries of modern devices. Today alone I have 6 different devices connected to the mains for recharging. Somehow one has already got used to it. 

Als das Bodenbrett fertig war, fing es an zu regnen. Super, da kann ich noch mal den Scheibenwischer mit dem intelligenten Antrieb testen. ;-)
Die senkrechte Windschutzscheibe erlaubt es auch mit Tropfen fahren zu können. Ich hatte das mal bei einem modernen Auto mit schräger Scheibe probiert. Da ging es nicht. Also muss man beim Model-T nicht ständig den Scheibenwischer bedienen. Trotzdem war der elektrische Scheibenwischer schon eine sinnvolle Entwicklung.
When the floorboard was finished, it started to rain. Great, so I can test the windshield wiper with the intelligent drive again. ;-)
The vertical windshield allows to drive even with drops. I tried this once on a modern car with a sloped windshield. It did not work. So with the Model-T you don't have to use the wiper all the time. Nevertheless, the electric windshield wiper was already a sensible development.

In dem Blog geht es ja darum wie alltagstauglich ein 104 Jahres Auto ist. Dazu gehört auch eine Einkaufsfahrt oder Leergut wegzubringen. Leider passen die Bierkisten nicht auf das Trittbrett, aber transportieren kann man sie trotzdem gut. Diese Fahrt hat 10 Euro und einen Cent in die Kasse gespült. Da kann ich wieder mit zur Tankstelle fahren. :-)
The blog is about how suitable for everyday use a 104 year old car is. This also includes a shopping trip or taking away empties. Unfortunately the beer crates do not fit on the running board, but you can still transport them well. This trip cost 10 Euro and one Cent. So I can go to the gas station again. :-)

78. Tag - Bodenbretter / Floor Boards

 Diese Woche möchte ich drei Punkte klären, die mich im Moment am meisten an dem Model-T beschäftigen:
- der undichte Tank
- die klappernde Scheibe
- die Bodenbretter

Ich fange mit den Bodenbretter an. Der erste Versuch sie neu zu bauen ist daran gescheitert, dass das normale Brett beim Versuch die Schlitze für die Pedale auszusägen durchgebrochen ist. Ich habe jetzt ein Mehrschichtbrett genommen und angefangen die Bretter ein zweites mal angefertigt. Das dritte Brett fehlt noch. Aber ich habe schon mal die Bleche abgeschliffen. 

This week I would like to clarify three points that I am currently most interested in the Model-T:

- the leaking tank
- the rattling window
- the floorboards

I start with the floorboards. The first attempt to rebuild them failed because the normal board broke through the slots for the pedals when I tried to saw them out. I have now taken a multilayer board and started building the boards a second time. The third board is still missing. But I have already sanded the boards.

Morgen mache ich weiter.
Tomorrow I will continue.

Jetzt mache ich das komplizierte dritte Brett. Das braucht vorn drei Ausschnitte für den Tacho und das Getriebe. Am Ende passt alles. Ich muss aber oft zum Auto laufen, um das Brett einzupassen.
Now I do the complicated third board. It needs three cutouts in the front for the speedometer and the gearbox. In the end everything fits. But I often have to walk to the car to fit the board.

Leider habe ich mich beim mittleren Brett ein wenig vermessen. Das kann ich ja beim dritten Versuch besser machen. :-) Aber die originale Gummimatte verdeckt den Faux Pass schön. 
Unfortunately I measured myself a little bit with the middle board. I can do it better on the third try. :-) But the original rubber mat hides the mistake nicely.

Jetzt fehlen nur noch die Blechabdeckungen. Die müssen aber erst lackiert werden. 
Now only the sheet metal covers are missing. But they have to be painted first.

77. Tag - Museumsbesuch / Visit to the museum

Gestern haben wir mit dem Model-T das "Historische Museum Saar" besucht. Während der T draußen mehr Interessierte anlockte, als zur gleichen Zeit im Museum waren, haben wir die Ausstellung "20er Jahre" und die ständigen Ausstellungen besucht. Wir haben es nicht bereut. Ich möchte Euch hier ein paar ausgesuchte Exponaten vorstellen. Yesterday we visited the "Historical Museum Saar" with the Model-T. While the T outside attracted more interested people than were in the museum at the same time, we visited the exhibition "20's" and the permanent exhibitions. We did not regret it. I would like to present a few selected exhibits to you here.

Für alle, die schon immer ein Vorkriegs-Mercedes haben wollten: 

"Die fahrbare Kreissäge. Zusammengestellt aus dem Chassis eines Wehrmachts-Mercedes, einem 5 PS-Dieselmotor mit Verdampfer-Kühlung und einer Tischkreissäge verdankt ihre Entstehung dem Erfindungsreichtum dreier Brüder, die damit in der brennstoffarmen Nachkriegszeit ein kleines Unternehmen gründeten." For all those who have always wanted a pre-war Mercedes: 

"The mobile circular saw. Assembled from the chassis of a Wehrmacht Mercedes, a 5 HP diesel engine with evaporator cooling and a table circular saw, it owes its creation to the inventiveness of three brothers, who used it to found a small company in the fuel-poor post-war period".

Der gepflegte Model-T-Fahrer trägt natürlich Hut. Bevorzugt einen Bowler. Das hier ist eine dampfbetriebene Hutpresse aus den 50er.  Die Formen wurden entsprechend der neuesten Mode in Paris gekauft. Damit konnte man neue Hüte herstellen oder alte umformen. The well-groomed Model-T driver wears a hat of course. Prefers a bowler. This is a steam powered hat press from the 50s.  The molds were bought in Paris according to the latest fashion. With it you could make new hats or reshape old ones.

In den 20er wurde das Automobil immer mehr zum allgemeinen Fortbewegungsmittel Darum wurden auch Brettspiele, wie "Eine Autofahrt durch das Saargebiet" beliebt. In the 20's the automobile became more and more the general means of locomotion. That's why board games like "A car trip through the Saar area" became popular.

Trotzdem waren Zweiräder, wie die französische Velo Solex (ein Hybrid-Allradfahrzeug mit Reibrollenmotor am Vorderrad und Muskelantrieb am Hinterrad) oder die italienische Vespa, noch die Fahrzeuge, welche sich die Bevölkerung leisten konnte. Nevertheless, two-wheelers, such as the French Velo Solex (a hybrid all-wheel drive vehicle with a friction roller motor on the front wheel and muscle drive on the rear wheel) or the Italian Vespa, were still the vehicles that the population could afford.

Wer etwas mehr Geld übrig hast konnte sich vielleicht eine Ardie 750 CC from 1928 aus Nürnberg leisten. Sie hat einen Zweizylinder-Motor mit 750ccm und 19 PS. Das ist fast soviel wie das Model-T mit 20 PS. Die Ardie fährt aber 110km/h. If you have a little more money left, you might have been able to afford an Ardie 750 CC from 1928 from Nürnberg. It has a two-cylinder engine with 750ccm and 19 HP. That is almost as much as the Model-T with 20 HP. But the Ardie drives 110km/h.

76. Tag - Stadtrundfahrt / Sightseeing Tour

Direkt im Anschluss an unsere Drachenbootveranstaltung kam auch der Ford wieder zum Einsatz. Bei schönstem Sonnenwetter habe ich mit zwei Freunden eine Stadtrundfahrt gemacht und hier bei selbst zum ersten mal die Sehenswürdigkeiten meiner Stadt richtig gesehen.

Aber erst mal der Reihe nach. Ein Model-T ist eigentlich das beste Auto, welches man sich für eine Stadtrundfahrt vorstellen kann. Man sitzt hoch, die Sicht ist unversperrt egal ob das Dach offen oder geschlossen ist, man fährt langsam und das Beste: wenn man gerade nichts über die Stadt zu berichten hat, kann man Fragen zum Auto beantworten. Eigentlich könnte man daraus ein Geschäft machen.
Directly after our dragon boat event the Ford was used again. In beautiful sunny weather I made a city tour with two friends and saw the sights of my city for the first time.

But first of all one after the other. A Model-T is actually the best car you can imagine for a city tour. You sit up high, the view is unobstructed, no matter if the roof is open or closed, you drive slowly and best of all: if you don't have anything to tell about the city, you can answer questions about the car. Actually you could make a business out of it. 

Saarbrücken hat eine Vielzahl barocker Architektur vorzuweisen. Die Ludwigskirche, eines der Wahrzeichen der Stadt wurde 1775 fertiggestellt. Heute hatte ich zum ersten mal die Gelegenheit die Kirche von innen zu sehen. Das Model-T stand solange neben dem Bau und hat vor den anderen barocken Gebäuden eine verdammt gute Figur gemacht. 
Saarbrücken has a great deal of baroque architecture to show for itself. The Ludwigskirche, one of the city's landmarks, was completed in 1775. Today I had the opportunity to see the church from the inside for the first time. The Model-T stood next to the building for so long and cut a very fine figure in front of the other baroque buildings.

 

Danach haben wir das Saarbrücker Schloss und die Ausgrabungen darunter besichtigt. Die Ausgrabungen sind beeindruckend. Untererdig wurde der Schlossgraben freigelegt. Die Ausgrabungen sind mehrere Stockwerke hoch. Ohne das Model-T und die Stadtrundfahrt hätte ich das alles wahrscheinlich noch immer nicht gesehen. 
Afterwards we visited the Saarbrücken Castle and the excavations below. The excavations are impressive. Underground the moat was uncovered. The excavations are several stories high. Without the Model-T and the city tour I probably still wouldn't have seen all this.

Danach haben wir noch das Historische Museum besucht. Dort gibt es gerade eine Ausstellung über die 20er Jahren. Davon werde ich dann morgen berichten, da ich heute schon ziemlich müde bin.

Der Model-T Effekt: Immer wieder passiert es, dass man zum Wagen zurück kommt und sich eine Menge Schaulustiger sich darum gebildet hat.
