137. Tag - Zündkerzen / Spark Plugs

Der Motor läuft und der Lüfter dreht jetzt ohne stehenzubleiben. Allerdings hat der Motor noch einen hohen Anteil mechanischer Geräusche. Da werde ich mich morgen drum kümmern.
The engine runs and the fan now rotates without stopping. However, the engine still has a high percentage of mechanical noise. I will take care of that tomorrow.

Zuerst kümmere ich mich um die Zündkerzen. Die Zündkerzenmulde des zweiten Zylinders ist immer mit Öl verspritzt. Offensichtlich ist das Gewinde der Zündkerze nicht dicht.
First I take care of the spark plugs. The spark plug well of the second cylinder is always splattered with oil. Obviously, the thread of the spark plug is not tight.

Ich werde die Zündkerze erst mal durch eine neue austauschen. Die neue Champion Zündkerze hat ein unterschiedliches Design als die als die alte Motorcraft Zündkerze. Bei der Champion Zündkerze fängt das Gewinde nicht direkt an der Elektrode an. Wird sie darum tiefer in den Zylinder hereinragen?
I will replace the spark plug with a new one for now. The new Champion spark plug has a different design than the old Motorcraft spark plug. On the Champion spark plug, the thread does not start directly at the electrode. Is that why it will go deeper into the cylinder?

Die neue Champion Zündkerze scheint dicht zu sein. Beim ersten Testlauf habe ich noch keine Öl in der Zündkerzenmulde gesehen. Hoffentlich bleibt das so.
The new Champion spark plug seems to be tight. On the first test run, I haven't seen any oil in the spark plug cavity yet. Hopefully it stays that way.

Es fällt allerdings auf, dass sich die neuen Zündkerzen unterschiedlich tief in die Gewinde drehen lassen. Ob das nicht Einfluss auf den Motorlauf nimmt?
However, it is noticeable that the new spark plugs can be turned to different depths in the threads. I wonder if that doesn't affect the engine running.

Trotz allen offenen Fragen läuft der Motor.

136. Tag - Kühlereinbau / Radiator Assembly

Ich bin jetzt an dem Punkt angelangt, wo ich endlich die Baustelle Kühler und Lüfter abschließen möchte. Jetzt kommt das neue Messingwasserrohr, neue Schläuche und neue Schlauchklemmen zum Einsatz.
I'm now at the point where I finally want to finish the radiator and fan job site. Now comes the new brass water pipe, new hoses and new hose clamps to use.

Leider habe ich kein Silikon mehr. Aber warum sollte das Kühlsystem nicht auch ohne Silikon dicht werden. Das hat doch 1916 auch funktioniert.
Unfortunately, I no longer have silicone. But why shouldn't the cooling system be tight without silicone? That also worked in 1916.

Um den Einbau des Kühlers zu erleichtern, montiere ich den Lüfter nochmal ab.
To make the installation of the cooler easier, I remove the fan again.

Am oberen Anschluss hatte ich den dünneren Schlauch vom unteren Anschluss montiert. Auch dieser wird  durch den richtigen ersetzt. Der richtige Schlauch ist auch länger.
At the upper connection I had mounted the thinner hose from the lower connection. This is also replaced by the correct one. The correct hose is also longer.

Sieht doch gut aus. Der richtige Schlauch ist sowohl am Kühler, als auch am Motor bis zum Anschlag auf die Flansche geschoben.
Looks good after all. The correct hose is pushed all the way onto the flanges on both the radiator and the engine.

Nachdem alles montiert ist, kann ich das Wasser wieder einfüllen.
After everything is mounted, I can fill the water again.

Und doch ist der obere Schlauchanschluss wieder nicht dicht. Mit einer zweiten Schlauchschelle konnte das Problem behoben werden. Ich werde diese Schnittstelle aber unter Beobachtung halten.
And yet the upper hose connection is not tight again. With a second hose clamp the problem could be solved. However, I will keep this interface under observation.

Sehr erfreulich. Die richtige Lüfterriemenscheibe und der passende Lüfterriemen positionieren den Lüfter genau mittig zwischen der Anlasserkurbelratsche und dem oberen Kühlerschlauch. Der Lüfter hat zu beiden Bauteilen ca. 15mm Abstand. Na also, geht doch!
Very pleasing. The correct fan pulley and fan belt position the fan exactly centered between the starter crank ratchet and the upper radiator hose. The fan has about 15mm clearance to both components. Well, there you go!

Der Motor läuft. Doch höre ich immer noch das Klackern und entdecke auch etwas an der Zündkerze des zweiten Zylinder, was ich morgen näher untersuchen muss.
The engine runs. But I still hear the clacking and also discover something on the spark plug of the second cylinder, which I will have to examine more closely tomorrow.

135. Tag - Verdeckriemen / Top to windschield straps

Der Verdeckriemen ist noch nicht montiert, da die Schrauben in der Holzleiste völlig verrostet waren und nicht mehr genutzt werden konnten. Leider habe ich keine passende neue Schraube gefunden und darum eine andere Lösung gewählt: Eine Gewindehülse mit einem Holzgewinde außen und einem Metallgewinde innen. Diese wird in das bestehende Loch im Holz eingeschraubt und erlaubt dann die Verwendung einer Maschinenschraube.
The soft top belt is not yet mounted, because the screws in the top bow were completely rusted and could no longer be used. Unfortunately, I did not find a suitable new screw and therefore chose another solution: A threaded sleeve with a wooden thread on the outside and a metal thread on the inside. This is screwed into the existing hole in the wood and then allows the use of a machine screw.

Zuerst werden die Gewindehülsen in den Holzspriegel geschraubt. 
First, the threaded sleeves are screwed into the top bow. 

Dann kann der Bügel mit den Metallschrauben befestigt werden. Es funktioniert. 
Then the bracket can be fixed with the metal screws. It works.

134. Tag - Kurbelratsche / Starting Crank Ratchet

Bevor der Kühler wieder montiert wird, hat man noch einen schönen Blick auf die Kurbelratsche und die Lüfterriemenscheibe. Die Lüfterriemenscheibe hat zwei Funktionen:
- der Antrieb des Lüfterriemens
- die Verbindung zur Ratsche der Anlasserkurbel
Before the radiator is mounted again, you have a nice view of the starting crank ratchet and the crank pulley. The crank pulley has two functions:
- the drive of the fan belt
- the connection to the starting crank ratchet

Die Ratsche greift in die Spannhülse der Lüfterriemenscheibe. Das ist eine ganz schön raffinierte Konstruktion.
The ratchet engages in the tension sleeve of the fan pulley. This is quite a clever design.

133. Tag - Ist Messing erstrebenswert? / Is brass desirable?

Als ich ein Model-T zum kaufen suchte war ein Suchkriterium, dass es mindestens 100 Jahre alt sein sollte. Damit kam nur ein Messingmodell in Frage. Eigentlich gefielen mir die späteren Modelljahre, welche komplett schwarz lackiert sind besser. Ich dachte, dass die Messingteile irgendwie kitschig aussehen. Außerdem muss man sie ständig putzen. Besonders cool fand ich das Coupe oder den Roadster.
Jetzt fahre ich ein 1916 Touring, also das viersitziges Cabrio als letztes Modell mit Messingkühler.
When I was looking for a Model-T to buy, one search criterion was that it should be at least 100 years old. So only a brass model came into question. Actually, I liked the later model years, which are painted completely black better. I thought the brass parts looked kind of tacky. Plus, you have to clean them all the time. I thought the coupe or roadster was especially cool.Now I drive a 1916 Touring, so the four-seat convertible as the last model with brass radiator. 

In der Zwischenzeit habe ich mein Messing-T aber sehr lieb gewonnen. Es ist doch ein schöner Kompromiss zwischen den früheren Vollmessingmodellen und den komplett schwarzen Modellen. Außerdem habe ich inzwischen gelernt Messing zu lackieren. Das macht es echt einfacher. 
In the meantime, however, I have grown very fond of my brass T. It's a nice compromise between the earlier all-brass models and the all-black models. I've also learned to paint brass in the meantime. That makes it really easier. 

132. Tag Buchvorstellung / Book Presentation

Was macht ein Model-T Fahrer, wenn er nicht Model-T fahren kann?
Er liest ein Buch über Model-T Fahrer :-)
Ich bin beruflich unterwegs und konnte mein Lieblingsauto (noch) nicht mitnehmen, da es gerade nicht fahrfähig ist. Ich konnte aber ein schönes Buch mitnehmen.

I'm traveling for work and couldn't take my favorite car with me (yet) because it's not drivable right now.
I was able to take a nice book with me though.

Tim Moore fährt mit einem Model-T von der Ost- zur Westküste der USA. Das spannende daran, er hat davor noch nie was mit dem Model-T zu tun gehabt. Er hat weder eines gefahren, noch sich mit der Technik auseinandergesetzt. Das gute an der Story ist die Erkenntnis, dass es noch wesentlich verrücktere Menschen gibt als mich. Das beruhigt mich irgendwie.
Tim Moore drives a Model-T from the east to the west coast of the USA. The exciting thing is that he has never had anything to do with the Model-T before. He has neither driven one nor dealt with the technology. The good thing about the story is the realization that there are a lot crazier people than me. That somehow reassures me.

Das Buch im Englischen Original "Another fine mess. across Trumpland in a Ford Model T" beschreibt die Fahrt im Model-T durch die Länder der USA, welche 2016 Donald Trump gewählt haben. Es ist also eine Art Sozialstudie mit vielen mir bereits bekannten Erfahrungen mit dem Auto. Und es werden auch viele Hintergrundinformationen der Entwicklung und Produktion des Model-Ts geliefert. Das alles mit britischem Humor.
The book in English original "Another fine mess. across Trumpland in a Ford Model T" describes the drive in the Model-T through the countries of the USA, which have elected Donald Trump in 2016. So it's a kind of social study with a lot of experiences with the car that I already know. And it also provides a lot of background information of the development and production of the Model-T. All of this with a British sense of humor.

131. Tag Lüftermontage / Fan Assembly

Im Moment ist meine Zeit sehr knapp bemessen. Wäre der Wagen gerade fahrbereit, hätte ich viel Spaß und viel zu erzählen. Doch so ist es nicht und ich versuche das Model-T so schnell wie möglich wieder auf die Straße zu bekommen. Ich denke das wird nächsten Donnerstag sein. 
Eben konnte ich noch schnell den Lüfter wieder anbauen. Die Einstellbare Riemenscheibe mit dem Schlitz und der Inbusschraube zum Spannen funktioniert prima. Nach Festziehen der Schraube hat die Riemenscheibe kein Spiel mehr. Beste Vorraussetzung für einen problemlosen Betrieb des Lüfters. Dieser war dann auch noch schnell montiert.
At the moment my time is very limited. If the car was just ready to drive, I would have a lot of fun and a lot to tell. But it is not like that and I try to get the Model-T back on the road as soon as possible. I think that will be next Thursday.
Just now I was able to quickly put the fan back on. The adjustable crankshaft pulley with the slot and the hex screw works great.  After tightening the screw the pulley has no more play. Best condition for a problem-free operation of the fan. The fan was mounted very fast.

130. Tag - Zoll Inbusschlüssel / Inch Hex Wrenches

Heute sind die Zoll Inbusschlüssel geliefert worden. Damit habe ich alle Teile und Werkzeuge zusammen um den Lüfter und Kühler morgen wieder zu montieren.
Today the inch hex wrenches have been delivered. So I have all parts and tools together to reassemble the fan and cooler tomorrow.

Nachtrag 05.12.2020:
Das neue Werkzeug musste gleich ran ans Auto. Zur Qualität der Inbusschlüssel kann ich noch nicht viel sagen. Der passende Inbusschlüssel steckte sehr stramm in der Schraube, aber es ging. Der Plastikköcher ist auffallend billig konstruiert und gefertigt. Doof konstruiert, da man sie Inbusschlüssel nicht von oben einschieben kann sondern mit viel Kraft seitlich einklinken muss. Das ist nervig. Das Spritzteil kommt sichtlich aus einem nicht professionell gefertigten Werkzeug.

Die Qualität der Inbusschlüssel kann ich (noch) nicht beurteilen. Es fällt auf, dass die Oberflächen unterschiedlich sind.
Aber für 11,49€ ist das völlig OK. Bis jetzt habe ich auch nur eine Innensechskannt Zoll Schraube, die ich vermutlich erst wieder in 2 Jahren aufschrauben muss.
Supplement 05.12.2020:

The new tool had to get right to the car. I can't say much about the quality of the hex wrenches yet. The right hex  wrench was very tight in the screw, but it worked. The plastic quiver is remarkably cheaply designed and manufactured. It is stupidly constructed, because you cannot insert it from the top, but have to use a lot of force to latch it laterally. That is annoying. The molded part obviously comes from a non-professional tool.

I cannot (yet) judge the quality of the Allen wrench. It is noticeable that the surfaces are different.
But for 11,49€ that is completely OK. Until now I have only one hexagon socket inch screw, which I will probably have to unscrew again in 2 years.

129. Tag - Verdeckriemen / Top to Windshield straps

Bevor der Lüfter wieder eingebaut wird, möchte ich noch schnell die Verdeckriemen zur Windschutzscheibe erneuern. Diese sind gerissen, als ich versuchte mit geschlossenem Verdeck in die Garage zu fahren. Eine Arbeit die schnell in einer Stunde zu erledigen ist. Einfach die Haltebügel abschrauben und die Lederriemen austauschen. 
Aber was ist das? Die Schrauben lassen sich nicht herausdrehen.
Before the fan is installed again, I would like to renew the top straps to the windshield. They tore when I tried to drive into the garage with the top closed. A job that can be done quickly in one hour. Just unscrew the brackets and replace the leather straps.
But what is this? The screws can not be unscrewed.

Als ich sie dann endlich in der Hand halte wird klar, dass hier Ersatz notwendig ist.
When I finally hold it in my hand it becomes clear that replacement is necessary.

Zumindest ist die Schnalle noch zu verwenden. Sie ist sogar viel schöner als die Neuteile im Katalog.
At least the buckle can still be used. It is even much nicer than the new parts in the catalog.

128. Tag - Wasserrohr lackieren / Paint Water Pipe

Das neue Wasserrohr aus Messing ist jetzt nicht nur poliert, sondern auch lackiert. Mit den Erfahrungen von der Kühlerlackierung, ging das ganz schnell. Das Rohr ist jetzt bereit zum Einbau.
The new brass water pipe is now not only polished but also painted. With the experience of the radiator painting, this was done very quickly. The pipe is now ready for installation.

127. Tag - Lüfterlager / Fan Bearing

Heute soll das Lüfterlager final repariert werden. Dazu habe ich 3 Ersatzteile gekauft:
- Lüfterschaft
- Schmiernippel aus Messing
- ein Kugellagereinsatz für die Lüfternabe
Leider gab es ein wichtiges Ersatzteil nicht zu kaufen: Eine Messinglagerbuchse für die Lüfternabe des Baujahres 1916 oder die Lüfternabe mit einer passenden Lagerbuchse. Eine neue Nabe gibt es nur mit Kugellager oder einen Kugellagereinsatz zum Einkleben. Das ist sehr schade, da ich eigentlich nicht beabsichtigt hatte den Wagen technisch zu modernisieren. Aber bevor ich ohne eine Möglichkeit den Lüfter zu reparieren vor der Werkbank stehe, habe ich den Kugellagereinsatz gekauft.
Today the fan bearing is to be finally repaired. Therefore I bought 3 spare parts:
- Fan shaft
- Fun grease cup brass
- Fun hub insert with ball bearing
Unfortunately there was an important spare part not to buy: A brass bearing bush for the fan hub of the model year 1916 or the fan hub with a suitable bearing bush. A new hub is only available with a ball bearing or a ball bearing insert to be glued in. This is a pity, because I did not intend to modernize the car technically. But before I stand in front of the workbench without a possibility to repair the fan, I bought the ball bearing insert.

Der neue Lüfterschaft unterscheidet sich zum alten durch das intakte Gewinde und hoffentlich größerem Durchmesser ohne Verschleiß.
The new fan shaft differs from the old one by the intact thread and hopefully larger diameter without wear.

Der neue Fettnippel hat ein schönes Detail: Einen O-Ring zur Abdichtung.
The new grease nipple has a nice detail: an O-ring for sealing.

Das ist der Kugellagereinsatz zum Einkleben. Ich habe ihn erst mal nicht ausgepackt da ich erst mal versuchen will ob es auch ohne ihn geht.
This is the ball bearing insert for gluing in. I have not unpacked it because I first want to try if it works without it.

Zuerst prüfe ich das Spiel des alten Lüfterschaftes.
First I check the play of the old fan shaft.

Der neue Schaft hat weniger als die Hälfte des Spiels. Viellicht ist es ein Versuch wert, den Lüfter erst mal ohne den Kugellagereinsatz zusammenzubauen.
The new stock has less than half the play. It might be worth a try to assemble the fan without the ball bearing insert.

Bisher hatte ich immer das Problem, dass der Lüfterschaft nicht ausreichend fixiert war. Der Schaft hat sich immer wieder in den Spannhebel geschraubt und die Lüfternabe geklemmt. Mein Spannhebel hat darum vermutlich eine kleine Feststellschraube, die aber nicht sehr gut funktioniert hat. Meine Vermutung war, dass eigentlich der Fettnippel den Schaft kontern soll. Leider war das Gewinde so kaputt, dass ich sogar den Fettnippel in der Fahrt verloren habe. Bei der Montage des neuen Schaftes und neuen Fettnippels sehe ich, dass der Fettnippel tatsächlich den Lüfterschaft kontert.
Up to now I always had the problem that the fan shaft was not sufficiently fixed. The shaft was always screwed into the clamping lever and the fan hub was clamped. Therefore my tension lever probably has a small locking screw, but it did not work very well. My guess was that the grease nipple should actually counter the shaft. Unfortunately the thread was so broken that I even lost the grease nipple while driving. When mounting the new shaft and new grease nipple I see that the grease nipple actually counters the fan shaft.

Nach der Montage aller Teile, muss das Lager gefettet werden.  Ich fülle den Fettnippel und seine Kappe mit Fett und schraube die Kappe bis zum Anschlag auf den Fettnippel.
After mounting all parts, the bearing must be greased.  I fill the grease nipple and its cap with grease and screw the cap onto the grease nipple until it stops.

Noch kommt das Fett nicht aus dem Lager heraus. Vermutlich ist aber schon die axiale Bohrung des Lüfterschaftes mit Fett gefüllt. Das Fett gelangt durch diese Bohrung zum Gleitlager. Das Fett im Deckel ist komplett in den Fettnippel gepresst.
The grease is not yet coming out of the bearing. But probably the axial bore of the fan shaft is already filled with grease. The grease reaches the plain bearing through this bore. The grease in the cover is completely pressed into the grease nipple.

Ich fülle den Deckel erneut mit Fett und schraube ihn auf den Fettnippel. Schon nach wenigen Gewindegängen kommt das Fett aus dem Lager heraus. 
I fill the lid with grease again and screw it onto the grease nipple. After only a few threads the grease comes out of the bearing. 

Der Lüfter dreht jetzt ohne das geringste Spiel im Lüfterlager. So könnte das funktionieren. Der Lüfter ist bereit zur Montage.
The fan now rotates without the slightest play in the fan bearing. This is how it could work. The fan is ready for mounting.
