48. Tag - Kühlermontage 2. Teil / Radiator Mounting Part 2

Heute kommt der zweite Versuch den Kühler zu montieren.

Zuerst reinige und lackiere ich den Kühler. Ich bringe nur eine Schicht auf. Aber leider geht auch heute wieder einiges schief. Beim Versuch alle Seiten des Kühlers nacheinander zu lackieren gibt es Farbläufer. Also wieder runter mit dem Lack und wieder von vorn. Insgesamt habe ich jetzt sechs mal den Kühler lackiert, bis das Ergebnis akzeptabel ist. 

Den Wasserzulaufstutzen am Motor werde ich noch austauschen. Der alte Stutzen ist außen schon stark gerostet. Ich habe Bedenken, dass das zu Undichtigkeiten führen könnte. Zur Sicherheit benutze ich noch temperaturbeständiges Silikon bei der Montage des Stutzens und später bei der Montage der Schläuche.

Today comes the second attempt to install the cooler.

First I clean and paint the cooler. I only apply one coat. But unfortunately today again a lot goes wrong. When I try to paint all sides of the cooler one after the other there are color runners. So again down with the paint and again from the front. I painted the radiator six times until the result is acceptable. 

I will replace the water inlet on the engine. The old connection is already rusted on the outside. I am concerned that this could lead to leaks. To be on the safe side, I will use temperature resistant silicone when installing the nozzle and later when installing the hoses.

I am also painting the upper socket so that there is a uniform image.
Gestern hatte ich beim Anziehen der Muttern Probleme. Die Muttern waren so schwergängig, dass sich zuerst die Schraube in die untere Metallplatte drehte und die Feder auf Anschlag zusammenpresste. Damit  ist die Feder ohne Funktion. Heute habe ich zuerst die obere Mutter eingefettet. Jetzt funktioniert es.

Yesterday I had problems tightening the nuts. The nuts were so stiff that first the screw turned into the lower metal plate and the spring compressed to stop. So the spring is without function. Today I greased the upper nut first. Now it works.

Ich fülle den Kühler erst mit normalem Wasser um die Dichtigkeit zu prüfen. Alles ist dicht. 

Jetzt möchte ich das Wasser wieder ablassen, um es durch destilliertes Wasser zu ersetzen. Da der Motor gerne überhitzt und öfter Wasser nachgefüllt werden muss, ist es besser destilliertes Wasser zu verwenden und eine Verkalkung des Kühlers zu vermeiden.

Doch es gibt eine Überraschung: Obwohl das Absperrventil unten am Kühler geöffnet ist, fließt das Wasser nicht heraus. Mit einem Nagel prüfe ich das Ventil. Es hat Durchgang, aber der Stutzen nicht. Vermutlich wurde das Loch beim Lackieren verschlossen. Mit einem Hammer kann ich den Nagel durchschlagen und das Wasser läuft heraus.

I first fill the radiator with normal water to check the tightness. Everything is tight. 

Now I want to drain the water again to replace it with distilled water. Since the engine likes to overheat and needs to be refilled with water more often, it is better to use distilled water and avoid calcification of the radiator.

But there is a surprise: Although the shut-off valve at the bottom of the radiator is open, the water does not flow out. With a nail I check the valve. It has passage, but the nozzle does not. Probably the hole was closed during painting. With a hammer I can hammer through the nail and the water runs out.

 

Nachdem das normale Wasser abgelassen und das destillierte Wasser aufgefüllt ist, montiere ich noch den Choke des Vergasers. Dieser ist einfach ein Draht, der durch den Kühler geführt wird. Den Draht kann man ziehen und gleichzeitig den Motor ankurbeln um den Vergaser mit Benzin zu füllen. Die Zündung bleibt dabei natürlich ausgeschaltet.

Ich starte den Motor und er läuft. Der Lüfter hält gebührenden Abstand vom Kühler. :-)

ich habe heute 6 Stunden am Wagen gearbeitet. Leider ist keine Zeit mehr um eine Probefahrt zu unternehmen. Wir sehen uns morgen wieder.

I start the engine and it runs. The fan keeps a proper distance from the radiator. :-)

47. Tag - Kühlermontage / Radiator Mounting

Heute möchte ich den Kühler montieren und eine Probefahrt machen.

Ich fange mit dem Kühler Montage Kit an. Mit diesem Kit wird der Kühler mit Federspannung auf dem Chassis montiert.

Today I want to mount the radiator and do a test drive.

I start with the radiator mounting kit. With this kit the cooler is mounted on the chassis with spring tension.

Der Kühler ist schnell montiert. Allerdings werde ich beim unteren Wasserrohr nachdenklich. Soll ich oder soll ich nicht? OK, ich lackiere ihn neu.

The cooler is quickly mounted. However, I become thoughtful with the lower water pipe. Should I or should I not?  OK, I'll repaint it.

Dann stehe ich vor dem Kühler und - nein er gefällt mir nicht. Es gibt einige Stellen, an denen man die Pinselstriche sieht. Die Qualität der Lackierung wird dem Kühler nicht gerecht. 

Ich möchte am Sonntag die Oldtimer Rallye meines Vereines mitfahren. Dort wird dann bestimmt jeder nach dem Kühler schauen und die Lackierung bemängeln ;-)

Ich schraube ihn wieder runter und fange an den Lack mit Lösungsmittel zu entfernen.

Zwischenzeitlich habe ich noch mal mit Werner telefoniert. Ich berichtete ihm, dass ich immer Schwierigkeiten mit der zweiten Lackschicht habe. Er hat mir bestätigt, dass er immer nur eine Lackschicht aufträgt. So werde ich es morgen auch machen. Der fünfte Versuch den Kühler zu lackieren.

Then I stand in front of the radiator and - no, I don't like it. There are some places where you can see the brush strokes. The quality of the paint does not do justice to the radiator. I would like to join my club's classic car rally on Sunday. There everyone will look for the radiator and complain about the paint :-(

I screw it down again and start to remove the paint with solvent.

In the meantime I have talked to Werner on the phone again. I told him that I always have difficulties with the second coat of paint. He confirmed that he always applies only one coat of paint. I will do the same tomorrow. The fifth attempt to paint the radiator.

Ach ja, die Probefahrt? Vielleicht morgen.

Oh yes, the test drive? Maybe tomorrow.

46. Tag - Kühler lackieren / Paint the radiator

Heute möchte ich den Kühler lackieren. Zuerst reinige ich ihn mit Universal-Verdünnen und pinsele dann die erste Lackschicht auf. Ich habe extra einen passenden Pinsel gekauft. 

Today I want to paint the radiator. First I clean it with universal thinner and then I brush on the first layer of paint. I have bought a suitable brush. 

  

Die erste Schicht sieht ganz gut aus. The first layer looks quite good.

Allerdings gibt es auf der Oberseite sichtbare Pinselstriche.

However, there are visible brush strokes on the upper side.

Der Versuch eine zweite Schicht aufzubringen, verbessert es nicht.

Trying to apply a second layer does not improve it.

Jetzt entferne ich alles wieder mit Lösungsmitte (was sehr gut geht), poliere den Kühler mit "Never Dull"  und lackiere ihn wieder. Dieses mal verdünne ich den Lack. Allerdings ist das Ergebnis auch nicht besser. Jetzt gibt es Lackläufer. Also wieder runter mit dem Lack und alles noch mal von vorn. Diesmal achte ich darauf, gleich beim ersten Pinselstrich die Fläche abzudecken. Die Probleme fingen immer an, als ich ein zweites mal über die gerade lackierte Fläche gestrichen habe. Jetzt sieht es besser aus. Ich lasse es erst mal trockenen, was übrigens sehr schnell geht. Morgen geht es weiter.

Now I remove everything again with solvent (which works very well), polish the radiator with "Never Dull" and paint it again. This time I dilute the paint. But the result is not better either. Now there are paint runners. So down with the paint again and everything again from the beginning. This time I make sure to cover the surface with the first brush stroke. The problems always started when I stroked a second time over the just painted area. Now it looks better. I let it dry first, which by the way is very fast. Tomorrow I will continue.

45. Tag - Messing lackieren / Paint Brass

Der Lack für den Kühler wurde geliefert. Jetzt dauert es nicht mehr lang, bis der Wagen wieder fährt. :-)

The paint for the radiator was delivered. Now it won't take long until the car is running again. :-)

Werner Straube hat gute Erfahrung mit dem Produkt der Firma Edelweiss Industrielacke (Pantarol) gemacht und mir den Lack empfohlen. Trotzdem muss ich erst testen, wie ich ihn am besten verarbeite. Darum lackiere ich erst mal ein kleines Messingteil, bevor ich mich an den Kühler wage. Ich versuche es mal mit dem Deckel des Lenkradgetriebe:

Werner Straube had good experience with the product of the company Edelweiss Industrielacke (Pantarol) and recommended the paint to me. Nevertheless, I first have to test how to apply it best. That's why I first paint a small brass part before I dare to touch the radiator. I try it with the steering gear cover:

Zuerst versuche ich den Deckel mit der Polierwolle "Never Dull" zu polieren.

First I try to polish the steering gear cover with the polishing wool "Never Dull".

Nach 15 Minuten Arbeit ist das Ergebnis nicht ausreichend, um es in Lack zu konservieren.

After 15 minutes of work, the result is not sufficient to preserve it in paint.

Polieren mit dem Polierbock dauert nur 5 Minuten und das Ergebnis ist erstklassig:

Jetzt wird der Deckel noch mit Verdünner entfettet:

Die Oberfläche ist jetzt perfekt und bereit zum Lackieren:

Nochmal mit dem trockenen Tuch poliert. Man sieht kein Fett mehr.

Polish again with the dry cloth. You will not see any more grease.

Mit dem Pinsel lackiere ich den Deckel zweimal. Die unverdünnte Farbe lässt sich sehr gut auftragen. Nach kurzer Zeit sieht man keine Pinselstriche mehr.

I paint the steering gear cover with the brush twice. The undiluted paint can be applied very well. After a short time you don't see any more brush strokes.

Der erste Versuch ein Messingteil zu lackieren war erfolgreich. Morgen werde ich den Kühler lackieren.

The first attempt to paint a brass part was successful. Tomorrow I will paint the radiator.

44. Tag - Timer & Kabel / Timer & Cable

Heute werde ich noch das Kabel des Timers austauschen.  Das neue Kabel liegt schon bereit.

Today I will replace the cable of the timer.  The new cable is already ready.

Der Kabelbaum besteht nur aus 5 einzelnen Kabel. 4 Kabel für den Timer und eines für die Scheinwerfer.  Der Kabelbaum verbindet die vier Zündspulen mit dem Timer und den Lichtschalter mit den Scheinwerfer. Er ist also nicht besonders lang.

The wiring harness consists of only 5 individual cables. 4 cables for the timer and one for the headlights.  The wire harness connects the four ignition coils with the timer and the light switch with the headlights. So it is not very long.

Die Installationsanweisung ist sehr einfach geschrieben.

The installation instructions are written very simply.

Der montierte Timer ist ein Anderson Timer. Er unterscheidet sich vom original Timer. Der Anderson Timer hat angeschraubte, abstehende Kontakte. Beim original Timer sind die Kontakte in einen Kunstoffring eingelassen. 

The mounted timer is an Anderson timer. It is different from the original timer. The Anderson Timer has screwed on, protruding contacts. With the original timer the contacts are embedded in a plastic ring. 

Beim Anderson Timer sind die Kontakte mit den Nummern der Zündspulen beschriftet.

On the Anderson Timer the contacts are labeled with the numbers of the ignition coils.

Original Timer mit Kontakten, welche in einen Kunststoffring eingelassen sind. Der sich drehende Mittelkontakt gräbt sich mit der Zeit in den Kunststoffring ein und die Funktion wird gestört.

Das alte Kabel wird entsorgt.

43. Tag - Lenkrad / Steering Wheel

Da ich noch auf den Lack für den Kühler warte, möchte ich mir mal das Lenkgetriebe anschauen. Das Lenkrad könnte auch eine kleine Auffrischung vertragen.

Das Lenkgetriebe befindet sich in der kleinen Dose hinter dem Lenkrad. Es ist übrigens ein Planetengetriebe wie im Getriebe. Da hatte Henry wohl viel Spaß mit.

Since I am still waiting for the paint for the radiator, I want to have a look at the steering gear. The steering wheel could also use a little touch-up.

The steering gear is located in the small box behind the steering wheel. By the way, it is a planetary gear like in the gearbox. Henry must have had a lot of fun with planetary gears.

Das äußere Hohlrad ist feststehend. Das innere Sonnenrad ist fest mit dem Lenkrad verbunden und läßt die Planetenräder und deren Achsen drehen. Die Lenksäule ist direkt mit den Planetenräder verbunden.

Hier muss nichts repariert werden. Nur neues Fett.

The outer ring gear is fixed. The inner sun wheel is fixed to the steering wheel and lets the planet wheels and their axes rotate. The steering column is directly connected to the planet wheels.

Nothing needs to be repaired here. Only new grease.

Der Holzreif wird abgeschliffen und neu lackiert. Mit der Lackierung habe ich einen richtigen Erfolgsmoment erlebt: Zuerst bis auf 1200er Körnung geschliffen. Dann mit dem Pinsel so dünn wie möglich lackiert. Nachdem der Lack getrocknet war noch mal mit 1200er Papier die Staubkörner weggeschliffen und noch mal ganz dünn mit dem Pinsel lackiert. Am Ende wieder mit 1200er Papier geschliffen. Ein hervorragendes Ergebnis. :-)

The steering rim is sanded down and repainted. With the varnishing I experienced a real moment of success: First I sanded down to 1200 grain. Then painted as thin as possible with a brush. After the varnish had dried the dust grains were sanded away with 1200 paper and varnished again very thin with the brush. At the end sanded again with 1200 paper. An excellent result. :-)

Die Speichen des Lenkrades habe ich mit Bürste und Schleifer bearbeitet und neu lackiert.

The spokes of the steering wheel I worked with brush and sander and repainted.

Und das Lenkrad ist wieder wie neu.

And the steering wheel is like new again.
