135. Tag - Verdeckriemen / Top to windschield straps

Der Verdeckriemen ist noch nicht montiert, da die Schrauben in der Holzleiste völlig verrostet waren und nicht mehr genutzt werden konnten. Leider habe ich keine passende neue Schraube gefunden und darum eine andere Lösung gewählt: Eine Gewindehülse mit einem Holzgewinde außen und einem Metallgewinde innen. Diese wird in das bestehende Loch im Holz eingeschraubt und erlaubt dann die Verwendung einer Maschinenschraube.
The soft top belt is not yet mounted, because the screws in the top bow were completely rusted and could no longer be used. Unfortunately, I did not find a suitable new screw and therefore chose another solution: A threaded sleeve with a wooden thread on the outside and a metal thread on the inside. This is screwed into the existing hole in the wood and then allows the use of a machine screw.

Zuerst werden die Gewindehülsen in den Holzspriegel geschraubt. 
First, the threaded sleeves are screwed into the top bow. 

Dann kann der Bügel mit den Metallschrauben befestigt werden. Es funktioniert.

129. Tag - Verdeckriemen / Top to Windshield straps

Bevor der Lüfter wieder eingebaut wird, möchte ich noch schnell die Verdeckriemen zur Windschutzscheibe erneuern. Diese sind gerissen, als ich versuchte mit geschlossenem Verdeck in die Garage zu fahren. Eine Arbeit die schnell in einer Stunde zu erledigen ist. Einfach die Haltebügel abschrauben und die Lederriemen austauschen. 
Aber was ist das? Die Schrauben lassen sich nicht herausdrehen.
Before the fan is installed again, I would like to renew the top straps to the windshield. They tore when I tried to drive into the garage with the top closed. A job that can be done quickly in one hour. Just unscrew the brackets and replace the leather straps.
But what is this? The screws can not be unscrewed.

Als ich sie dann endlich in der Hand halte wird klar, dass hier Ersatz notwendig ist.

Zumindest ist die Schnalle noch zu verwenden. Sie ist sogar viel schöner als die Neuteile im Katalog.
At least the buckle can still be used. It is even much nicer than the new parts in the catalog.

126. Tag - Verdecksplinte / Top Bow Side Straps

4 Splinte halten das Dach in Position und werden selbst von kleinen Lederriemen gehalten. Naja, sie wurden gehalten. Dieser Teil einer Restauration macht wirklich Spaß: Ersatzteil im Internet mit einem Klick bestellen und in 3 Tagen kann man das Teil austauschen. Hierzu muss man nur eine gut zugängliche Schraube in Schulterhöhe herausschrauben, den neuen Lederriemen kürzen, anbohren und mit der kleinen Schraube wieder am Dachgestänge befestigen. Man braucht keinen Wagenheber oder Hebebühne, man macht sich die Finger nicht ölig oder muss auf dem Boden rumkrappeln, man kann nichts kaputt machen und wenn etwas nicht funktionieren sollte hat das eigentlich keine Auswirkungen. So macht Vorkriegstechnik richtig Spaß.
4 cotter pins hold the roof in position and are even held in place by small leather straps. Well, they were held. This part of a restoration is really fun: Order spare parts on the internet with one click and in 3 days you can replace the part. All you have to do is unscrew an easily accessible screw at shoulder height, shorten the new leather strap, drill a hole in it and fasten it to the roof frame again with the small screw. You don't need a jack or a lifting platform, you don't make your fingers oily or have to crawl around on the floor, you can't break anything and if something doesn't work it doesn't really have any effect. So pre-war technology is really fun.

Der neue Riemen wird auf die passende Länge gekürzt.

Leider ist der neue Riemen etwas zu lang. Also noch etwas mehr kürzen und ein neues Loch für die Schraube reinbohren.
Unfortunately the new belt is a bit too long. So shorten it a bit more and drill a new hole for the screw.

Beim zweiten Gelenk passt es gleich beim ersten Versuch.

Und auch der dritte und vierte Lederriemen ist jetzt in wenigen Minuten ersetzt.

63. Tag - Verdeckreparatur Teil 2 / Hood Repair Part 2

Heute habe ich die Reparatur des Spriegels fertiggestellt. Ich habe etwas Bedenken, dass die Stahlstäbe aus dem Holz ausbrechen können. Um das möglichst zu vermeiden habe ich das Holz mit Draht bandagiert. Ich denke das könnte helfen. Außerdem habe ich den Spalt mit Epoxy ausgefüllt. Today I finished the repair of the bow. I have some concerns that the steel bars might break out of the wood. To avoid this I bandaged the wood with wire. I think this could help. I also filled the gap with epoxy.

Das Dach ist repariert. Es hat insgesamt 3,5 Stunden gedauert. Mal sehen wie lange es hält. Entweder bricht es zum ungünstigsten Moment aus oder es hält als Provisorium ewig. Ich bin gespannt. The roof is repaired. It took 3.5 hours in total. Let's see how long it lasts. Either it breaks out at the worst possible moment or it lasts forever as a temporary solution. I am curious.

62. Tag - Verdeckreparatur / Hood Repair

Heute gibt es fast eine Live Berichterstattung vom Versuch das Verdeck zu reparieren. Hier könnt ihr das Ersatzteil sehen. Es kostet ca. 60€ und muss nicht kureingebaut werden, sondern auch noch an den Enden angepasst werde, damit es in die Rohre passt. Heute ist ein verregneter, kalter Tag. Wenn ich schon in der ungeheizten Werkstatt arbeiten muss, sollt ihr die Möglichkeit haben vor dem warmen Kaminfeuer eine anspruchsvolle Unterhaltung zu genießen.  Ich werde versuchen jede Stunde ein Update zu posten. 

Today there is almost a live coverage of the attempt to repair the top. Here you can see the spare part. It costs about 60€ and not only has to be installed, but also the ends have to be adjusted to fit into the tubes. Today is a rainy and cold day. If I already have to work in the unheated workshop, you should have the possibility to enjoy a sophisticated entertainment in front of the warm fireplace.  I will try to post an update every hour. 

Also 12:40: Abfahrt zur Garage. Vorher muss ich noch in der anderen Werkstatt Werkzeug mitnehmen. Ich hoffe nur, dass ich das richtige Werkzeug haben werde und nicht wieder zurück muss. Ich habe ca. 6 Stunden Zeit. Ich könnte wetten, dass die Zeit nicht ausreicht.

Zuerst brauche ich passende Musik. Leider habe ich mein Grammophon nicht dabei. Aber Bix Beiderbecke hat es irgendwie ins Bluetooth-Zeitalter geschafft.

14:22: Ich realisiere den notwendigen Arbeitsaufwand. Das Verdeck ist mit 3 Lagen Klammern an den Holzspriegel geklammert! Die Ummantelung des Spriegels, das Verdeck und der darüber liegende.

15:00: Ich versuche den alten Spriegel zu reparieren, um nicht das ganze Verdeck demontieren zu müssen. Das haben vermutlich schon sehr viele Model-T Fahrer vor mir versucht. Ich frage mich mit welchem Erfolg. Ich hatte schon mit Werner darüber gesprochen. Er meinte, dass solche Reparaturen nicht lange halten. Vermutlich hat er Recht. Aber mir fehlt gerade die Motivation, den ganzen Spriegel heraus zunehmen, ohne es versucht zu haben das Problem mit einer kleinen Reparatur zu beheben. Schade, dass die Amerikanischen Mitglieder der Facebookgruppe " Model T Ford Owners" noch nicht online sind. 

15:00: I try to repair the old roof bow so that I don't have to remove the whole top. Probably many Model-T drivers before me have tried this. I wonder with what success. But I just lack the motivation to take out the whole bow without having tried to fix the problem with a small repair. Ich habe das Verdeck probeweise geschlossen und die Länge des Spiegels nachgemessen. Ich Muss ihn noch 20mm kürzen.

I closed the top on a trial basis and measured the length of the mirror. I still have to shorten it 20mm.

Den Lederriemen repariere ich mit einer 5mm Schraube. Nur solange bis ich einen neuen Riemen besorgt habe.

I repair the leather strap with a 5mm screw. Only until I get a new strap.

Ich werde die Reparaturstelle morgen noch mit einem Blech verstärken und das Verdeck und den Keder wieder annageln.

57. Tag - Nachtfahrt mit Crash / Night drive with crash

Heute habe ich meine erste Nachtfahrt absolviert. Da der Magneto ausgefallen ist, sind die Lampen auf die Batterie geschaltet. Ich weiß nicht wie lange das funktioniert aber ich bin mutig 39km in die Nacht gefahren. Die halbe Zeit konnte ich noch ohne Licht fahren. Allerdings haben sich die Autofahrer in den letzten 104 Jahren erheblich geändert. Es ist noch fast taghell und doch gibt es viele Taglichtfahrer, die mir mit Lichthupe signalisieren wollen, dass ich das Licht vergessen habe. Today I made my first night drive. Because the magneto failed, the lights are switched to the battery. I don't know how long this works but I bravely drove 39km into the night. Half of the time I could still drive without lights. However, the drivers have changed a lot in the last 104 years. It is still almost daylight and yet there are many LED-daylight drivers who want to signal me with their headlights flashing that I have forgotten the lights.

Ich konnte sogar meinen Geschwindigkeitsrekord von 78,9 km/h übertreffen: 81,5 km/h auf leicht abschüssiger Straße. Auf der Ebene schafft der Wagen deutlich über 70km/h. I even managed to beat my speed record of 78.9 km/h: 81.5 km/h on a slightly sloping road. On the flat the car manages well over 70km/h.

Die Lampen funktionieren erstaunlich gut mit 6V aus der Batterie. Da die Scheinwerfer aber keine Fernlicht und Abblendlicht haben, ist die Straße nicht besonders gut ausgeleuchtet. Aber es ist ausreichend. Vielleicht sieht man das auf dem Video. The lamps work surprisingly well with 6V from the battery. But because the headlights have no high beam and low beam, the road is not very well illuminated. But it is sufficient. Maybe you can see that on the video.

Ich bin durch die Stadt und auf der Landstraße gefahren. Gerade auf der Landstraße war es zum Teil richtig dunkel. Ich überlege, ob ich die Öllampen vorn und vielleicht auch hinten wieder nutzen soll. Ich werde mich die nächsten Tage mal darum kümmern. Original hatte der 1916er Touring hinten nur eine Öllampe. Für die Zulassung des Wagens musste ich diese Lampe mit einer elektrischen Birne ausrüsten und noch eine zweite Rückleuchte installieren. Dazu habe ich die originale Lampe der späteren Modelle verwendet. Ich werde eine zweite Öllampe suchen. I drove through the city and on the country road. Especially on the country road it was sometimes really dark. I consider whether I should use the oil lamps in front and maybe also in the back again. I will take care of it the next days. Originally the 1916 Touring had only one oil lamp in the back. For the registration of the car I had to equip this lamp with an electric bulb and install a second rear light. For this I used the original lamp of the later models. I will look for a second oil lamp.

Und dann ist es passiert. Der erste Unfall! Es war schrecklich, richtig dramatisch. Beim Einfahren in die Garage habe ich nicht daran gedacht, dass ich dort nie mit geschlossenem Verdeck reingefahren bin. Im dunkeln, habe ich wirklich nicht an das geschlossene Verdeck gedacht. And then it happened. The first accident! It was terrible, really dramatic. When I drove into the garage, I didn't think about the fact that I never drove in there with the top closed. In the dark, I really did not think about the closed top.

Dabei hatte ich noch Glück. die zwei Lederriemen vorn sind gerissen und die vordere Holzstange ist gebrochen. Der Stoff ist nicht beschädigt. Werner hat noch eine Stange übrig und wird sie mir schicken. Das wird mindestens ein Tag Arbeit. But I was still lucky. The two leather straps in front are torn and the wooden bar in front is broken. The fabric is not damaged. Werner has one rod left and will send it to me. That will be at least one day's work.
