359. Tag - Motor Demontage / Engine disassembly

Zum Transport des Motors werde ich ihn auseinander bauen. ich fange mit dem Krümmer und Vergaser an.
To transport the engine I will disassemble it. i will start with the manifold and carburetor.

Danach wird die Ölwanne entfernt. Da Motor und Getriebe im gleichen Öl laufen, gibt es auch nur eine Ölwanne. Es fällt auf, dass die Schrauben mit nur wenig Drehmoment angeschraubt sind. Vermutlich hat das zusätzliche Silikon auf der Dichtfläche mit der Zeit nachgegeben.
The oil pan is then removed. Since the engine and transmission run in the same oil, there is also only one oil pan. It is noticeable that the screws are screwed on with only little torque. Presumably, the additional silicone on the sealing surface has given way over time.

Mit dem Silikon hat Werner die kritischen Stellen ausgefüllt um zu verhindern, dass sich dort Ölschlamm sammelt. Es ist kein Ölschlamm zu sehen. 
Werner filled the critical areas with silicone to prevent oil sludge from collecting there. There is no oil sludge to be seen. 

Nachdem die Ölwanne entfernt ist kann man das Getriebe abnehmen. Es ist mit nur 4 Schrauben an der Kurbelwelle angeschraubt.
After the oil pan is removed, the gearbox can be taken off. It is bolted to the crankshaft with only 4 screws.

Auf der Rückseite des Getriebes sind die Magnete für den Magneto aufgeschraubt.
The magnets for the magneto are screwed onto the back of the gearbox.

Der Isolierlack des Spulenkranzes weißt einige Beschädigungen auf.
The insulating lacquer of the mag coil has some damage.

Das ist der Trichter, welcher das durch die Schwungscheibe aufgewirbelte Öl einfängt und es nach vorn zu den ersten Lager führt. Das ist die originale Ölleitung im Motor, nicht die zusätzliche, welche außen am Motor angebracht ist.
This is the funnel that catches the oil swirled up by the flywheel and carries it forward to the first bearings. This is the original oil line in the engine, not the additional one attached to the outside of the engine.

Und jetzt kommt die Überraschung: Der Trichter hat nicht nur Öl, sondern auch Isolierlack des Spulenkranz eingefangen. Dieser Lack hat den Trichter verstopft. Ohne der zusätzlichen High Volume Schmierung, hätte die Ölversorgung der vorderen Lager nicht mehr funktioniert. Der sich ablösende Isolierlack ist Grund genug den Spulenring auszutauschen.
And now comes the surprise: The funnel has caught not only oil, but also insulating varnish of the mag coil. This varnish has clogged the funnel. Without the additional high-volume lubrication, the oil supply to the front bearings would no longer have worked. The peeling insulating lacquer is reason enough to replace the magneto coil.

Jetzt suche ich das beschädigte Lager von dem das Stück Weißmetall stammt, welches ich beim Ölwechsel gefunden habe. Die Pleuellager sehen alle gut aus.
Now I'm looking for the damaged bearing that the piece of white metal I found during the oil change came from. The connecting rod bearings all look good.

Nur beim ersten Pleuellager fehlt links ein kleines Stück.
Only the first connecting rod bearing is missing a small piece on the left.

Hier sieht man das zweite Hauptlager der Kurbellwelle. Dieses befindet sich zwischen dem zweiten und dritten Zylinder. Hier bin ich mit nicht sicher, ob in dem Spalt links und rechts nicht Weißmetall des Lagers sein sollte. Vielleicht stammen die Bruchstücke von diesem Lager.
Here you can see the second main bearing of the crankshaft. This is located between the second and third cylinder. Here I'm not sure if there shouldn't be white metal of the bearing in the gap left and right. Maybe the broken pieces are from this bearing.

Der neue Motorständer ist schon sehr nützlich. Ich kann damit den Motor aus der Garage rollen.
The new engine stand is already very useful. I can roll the engine out of the garage with it.

358. Tag - Brennender Magneto / Burning Magneto

Die Überprüfung des Magnetos steht noch aus. Der Magneto hat schon nicht richtig funktioniert nachdem der Motor Überholt worden ist. Der Motor ist zwar mit dem Magneto gelaufen, sobald aber das Licht angeschaltet wurde reichte die Spannung nicht mehr aus und der Motor ist abgestorben. Es hatte dann nicht lange gedauert, bis der Magneto überhaupt keinen Strom mehr lieferte.
The magneto has yet to be checked. The magneto did not work properly after the engine was overhauled. The engine ran with the magneto, but as soon as the light was turned on, the voltage was no longer sufficient and the engine died. It was not long before the magneto no longer supplied any current.

Zuerst prüfe ich die Kraft der Magnete. Bei meinem originalen Motor hatte ich ein ähnliches Problem, welches aber mit einer Aufmagnetisierung der Magnete behoben werden konnte. Es ist ein gutes Indiz für funktionierende Magnete, wenn ein Schraubendreher an den Magneten haften bleibt. Das ist hier der Fall. Für das Bild habe ich eine Schraube an den Magneten gehalten. Die Schraube fällt nicht herunter. Die Magnetkraft sollte ausreichend sein.
First I check the force of the magnets. I had a similar problem with my original motor, but it was solved by magnetizing the magnets. It is a good indication of working magnets if a screwdriver sticks to the magnets. That is the case here. For the picture, I held a screw to the magnets. The screw does not fall down. The magnetic force should be sufficient.

Als nächstes möchte ich eine 12 Volt Batterie an den Magneto anschließen. Es gibt zwei mögliche Fehler: Entweder ist der Stromkreis der Spulen unterbrochen oder es gibt einen Kurzschluss zur Masse. In beiden Fällen wird der Magneto keinen Strom liefern.
Prüfung auf Unterbrechung: Sollte es beim Kontakt der Batterie mit dem Magneto keine Funken geben, ist der Stromkreis unterbrochen (eher unwahrscheinlich).
Prüfung auf Kurzschluss: Ein Kurzschluss wird Wärme erzeugen. Wahrscheinlich würde dann das Öl verdampfen. So kann man den Kurzschluss lokalisieren.
Next, I want to connect a 12 volt battery to the magneto. There are two possible faults: either the coil circuit is broken or there is a short to ground. In both cases, the magneto will not supply current.

Testing for open circuit: If there are no sparks when the battery contacts the magneto, the circuit is broken (rather unlikely).

Testing for short circuit: A short circuit will generate heat. Probably the oil would then evaporate. This is how to locate the short circuit.

Bevor ich die 12 Volt Batterie an den Magneto anschließe, ermittle ich die Polung der Magnete und der Spulen. Die Magnete sollten genau vor den Spulen positioniert werden und umgekehrte Polung haben. Dann werden sie durch anschließen der Batterie zusätzlich magnetisiert. Sollten sie die gleiche Polung haben, würden die Magnete entmagnetisiert.
Die Polung prüfe ich mit einem Stabmagneten aus dem Schulunterricht.
Before I connect the 12 volt battery to the magneto, I determine the polarity of the magnets and the coils. The magnets should be positioned exactly in front of the coils and have reversed polarity. Then they are additionally magnetized by connecting the battery. If they should have the same polarity, the magnets would be demagnetized.

I check the polarity with a bar magnet from school lessons. 

Dieser Magnet der Schwungscheibe stößt den Südpol des Stabmagneten ab und zieht den Nordpol an. Der Magnet der Schwungscheibe zeigt also mit seinem Südpol zur Spule.
This magnet of the flywheel repels the south pole of the bar magnet and attracts the north pole. The magnet of the flywheel thus points with its south pole to the coil.

Die benachbarten Spulen sind umgekehrt gepolt.
The adjacent coils are reversed in polarity.

Jetzt schaue ich mit den Kontakt des Spulenkranzes an. Dieser ist beschädigt. Die Isolierung ist gebrochen und der ganze Kontakt lässt sich heraus biegen. Das muss noch nicht die Ursache des Fehlers sein, jedoch ist das alles andere als gut.
Now I look at the contact of the mag coil. This is damaged. The insulation is broken and the whole contact can be bent out. This is not necessarily the cause of the fault, but it is anything but good.

Zuerst teste ich den Stromkreis des Spulenkranzes auf Durchgang. Der Minuspul der Batterie ist mit dem Motorgehäuse verbunden und den Pluspol halte ich kurz an den Pluspol. Dabei gibt es Funken und das bedeutet, dass der Stromkreis nicht unterbrochen ist.
First I test the circuit of the mag coil for continuity. The negative coil of the battery is connected to the motor housing and I briefly hold the positive pole to the positive pole. There are sparks and that means that the circuit is not broken.

Noch weiß ich aber nicht, ob der Spulenkranz einen Kurzschluss zur Masse hat. Das prüfe ich durch längerer Bestromung des Spulenkranzes.

Es ist tatsächlich so, dass die erste Spule anfängt zu qualmen. Das würde nicht passieren, wenn die Isolierung intakt ist. Hier gibt es einen Kurzschluss zur Masse. Vielleicht kann man das noch reparieren?
However, I still do not know whether the mag coil former has a short circuit to ground. I will check this by applying current to the coil former for a longer time.

It is indeed the case that the first coil starts to smoke. This would not happen if the insulation is intact. There is a short to ground here. Maybe this can still be repaired?

Beim weiteren Testen passiert jetzt etwas Unerwartets. Der Spulenkranz fängt an zu brennen und ich beschließe den kompletten Spulenkranz auszutauschen.
During further testing, something unexpected happens. The mag coil starts to burn and I decide to replace the complete coil ring.

357. Tag - Motorständer / Motor Stand

Heute habe ich den Motorständer zum Auto gebracht um zu schauen, ob die Grundkonstruktion passt. Die beiden werden noch um ein Vierkantrohr ergänzt, damit man den Motor mit Schrauben an dem Ständer befestigen kann. Dann passt auch die Höhe. Die Ölablassschraube hat dann noch 2cm Luft zum Boden. Der maximale Höhe des Motors auf dem Ständer beträgt 68cm. Damit kann ich ihn gut in das Auto einladen.
Today I took the engine stand to the car to see if the basic design would fit. A square tube will be added to them so that the engine can be attached to the stand with screws. Then also the height fits. The oil drain plug has then still 2cm air to the ground. The maximum height of the engine on the stand is 68cm. So I can load it well into the car.

Vorn werde ich den Motor nicht am Lager der Anlasserkurbel abstützen, sondern an der kleinen Wanne. Das Loch darin ist sehr nützlich um den Motor mit einer Schraube am Ständer zu fixieren. Diese Lösung ist viel einfacher als eine Abstützung am Lager der Anlasserkurbel.
At the front I will not support the engine at the bearing of the starter crank, but at the small tub. The hole in it is very useful to fix the engine to the stand with a screw. This solution is much easier than supporting it at the bearing of the starter crank.

Ich konnte auch die Rollen testen. Jede der Rollen kann 80kg tragen. In der Summe also 320kg. Ich kenne das Gewicht des Motors nicht. Ich kann aber den Ständer mit dem Motor gut bewegen. Die Rollen sind wohl ausreichend dimensioniert.
I was also able to test the rollers. Each of the rollers can carry 80kg. So in total 320kg. I do not know the weight of the motor. But I can move the stand well with the motor. The rollers are probably sufficiently dimensioned.

Zurück von der Garage schweiße ich noch die letzten Teile an. Die Stützen  habe ich noch mit seitlichen Platten ergänzt, die verhindern sollen, dass die seitlichen Lager des Motors vom Ständer rutschen.
Die drei Löcher für die Schrauben werde ich bohren, wenn der Motor auf dem Ständer liegt. Dann muss der Ständer nur noch lackiert werden. Ich denke, dass der Ständer sehr nützlich in der Zukunft wird. Nicht nur für en Transport, sondern auch um meinen Ersatzmotor zu lagern.
Back from the garage I weld the last parts. I added side plates to the supports to prevent the side bearings of the engine from slipping off the stand. 
I will drill the three holes for the screws when the engine is on the stand. Then the stand just needs to be painted. I think the stand will be very useful in the future. Not only for transport, but also to store my spare engine.

Nachtrag: Die Löcher für die Schrauben sind gebohrt. Ich musst auch noch die Auflage vorn verlängern. Die Ölwanne liegt vorn aber nicht genau in der Mitte des Ständers auf. Entweder sind die Halter des Motors nicht symmetrisch oder der Ständer ist nicht genau rechtwinklig.
Addendum: The holes for the screws are drilled. I also had to extend the support in front. But the oil pan does not rest exactly in the middle of the stand at the front. Either the engine mounts are not symmetrical or the stand is not exactly square.

356. Tag - Motorständer / Motor Stand

Bevor der Motor instand gesetzt wird, brauche ich einen Motorständer für den Transport. Der Motor soll mit den beiden seitlichen Motorhalter und dem Lager der Anlasserkurbel auf dem Ständer stehen. Ich habe am Motor Maß genommen und fange an die Grundkonstruktion zu bauen. Der Motorständer bekommt vier Rollen, damit man den Motor von der Werkstatt zum Auto rollen kann. Der vordere Ständer ist noch nicht angeschweißt, da ich den Ständer erst mal unter den Motor stellen will und dann den fehlenden Ständer anpassen werde.

Before the engine is repaired, I need an engine stand for transport. The engine should stand on the stand with the two lateral engine mounts and the bearing of the starter crank. I took measurements at the engine and start to build the basic construction. The engine stand will get four casters so you can roll the engine from the shop to the car. The front stand is not welded on yet, because I want to put the stand under the engine first and then I will adjust the missing stand.

355. Tag - Die Dorfschmiede sind rar geworden / The village blacksmiths have become rare

Der Blog wurde leider unerwartet unterbrochen. Nach dem die Triple Gears Lager alle fest waren, musste ich leider feststellen, was das eigentliche Problem mit dem Model T ist: Die Dorfschmiede sind rar geworden. 

Angeblich konnte früher jeder Dorfschmied einen Ford reparieren. Heute sieht die Situation so aus, dass man mit einem solchen Auto gar nicht zu einer Autowerkstatt fahren muss. Die sind damit leider überfordert und die Dorfschmiede gibt es halt nicht mehr.

So stand der Wagen erst mal in der Garage und der Motor daneben. Leider hatte ich aus privaten Gründen auch nicht genug Zeit die Reparatur selbst anzugehen. Inzwischen ist viel passiert. Zum Beispiel hat mich die traurige Nachricht erreicht, dass Werner Straube gestorben ist. Ich hatte sehr oft mit ihm in dem vergangenen Jahr telefoniert und die verschiedenen Dinge besprochen. Das wird mir sehr fehlen. 

So konnte der Motor nicht repariert werden und der originale Motor des Wagens auch nicht fertiggestellt werden. Aber jetzt geht es weiter. Ich werde mit Unterstützung des Ford Model T Alpenchapters den Ersatzmotor in Stand setzen. Ich freue mich schon auf unser erstes Treffen.

The blog was unfortunately interrupted unexpectedly. After the Triple Gears bearings were all fixed, I unfortunately found out what the real problem with the Model T is: village blacksmiths have become scarce. 

Supposedly, in the past, any village blacksmith could repair a Ford. Today, the situation is that you don't even have to go to a garage with such a car. Unfortunately, they are overtaxed and the village smithy no longer exists.

So the car stood in the garage and the engine next to it. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to do the repair myself. In the meantime a lot has happened. For example I got the sad news that Werner Straube died. I had talked to him very often on the phone during the past year and discussed the various things. I will miss that very much. 

So the engine could not be repaired and the original engine of the car could not be finished either. But now things are moving on. I will be repairing the spare engine with the assistance of the Ford Model T Alpine Chapter. I am already looking forward to our first meeting.
