341. Tag - Landmaschinenhandel / Agricultural machinery trade

Am Samstag ist die große Fahrt nach Nideggen zur Oldtimer Rally "Eifelrundfahrt 1922". Ich möchte auf eigener Achse hinfahren. 212 km mit vielen Bergen. Es gibt noch viel vorzubereiten. 
Ich möchte noch das Differentialöl wechseln, den Benzinhahn abdichten und die Pleuellager nochmal überprüfen. Ich befürchte, dass ich nicht alles in der verbleibende Zeit schaffe.
Das Differentialöl ist das wichtigste. Es gibt eine Menge Metallabrieb darin. Für das Model T braucht man möglichst dickflüssiges Getriebeöl. Die SAE-Viskositäts­klassen werden seit 1911 von der Society of Automotive Engineers festgelegt. Getriebeöl gibt es in den Viskositätsklassen bis SAE 250. Im normalen Autoteilehandel werden aber nur Viskositätsklassen bis SAE 90 angeboten.
Das ist etwas wenig für das Model T. Also besuche ich unseren Landmaschinenhandel im Dorf. Dort gibt es Fließfett. Das soll die Beste Wahl für mein Differential sein. Außerdem ist ein Landmaschinenhandel ganz im Sinne von Henry Ford, der ja ein Auto konstruiert hat, welches von jedem Dorfschmied repariert werden sollte.
Allerdings ist der Landmaschinenhandel in Kirkel weit entfernt von einem Dorfschmied. Der Handel hat ein großes Lager.

339. Tag - Werkstatt mit Stil / Workshop with style

Ich mag kleine Werkstätten mit Charme. In Saarbrücken gibt es eine, die ein Faible für Oldtimer hat. Auto Kappel GmbH in Saarbrücken. Es macht immer wieder Spaß daran vorbei zu fahren und zu sehen welche Autos heute auf dem Hof stehen. Heute stehen zwei Citroen Traction Avant und zwei Citroen DS vor der Werkstatt. Im Schaufenster noch ein Volvo Amazon und ein Citroen CX. Ich weiß bis heute nicht, wie sie die Autos in das Schaufenster bekommen. Es muss sehr viel Aufwand sein, da es keine richtige Einfahrt gibt. Nur die Glastür mit den 3 Stufen davor.

I like small workshops with charm. There is one in Saarbrücken that has a soft spot for classic cars. Auto Kappel GmbH in Saarbrücken. It's always fun to drive by and see what cars are in the yard today. Today there are two Citroen Traction Avant and two Citroen DS in front of the workshop. In the shop window another Volvo Amazon and a Citroen CX. To this day I don't know how they get the cars into the showcase. It must be a lot of effort, because there is no real entrance. Only the glass door with the 3 steps in front of it.

330. Tag - Ein Tag wie im Zoo / A day like in the zoo

Ein Tag wie im Zoo - nur dass das Model T das Tier im Zoo ist. 
Den ganzen Tag lang musste das Model T für Photo Shootings der Passanten herhalten. Vermutlich ist das Auto das meist fotografierte Motiv in Saarbrücken. Ein Junge der unbedingt wissen wollte, was es kostet mit dem Auto rumgefahren zu werden und am Ende seine Mutter schickte um nach dem Preis zu fragen.
Das ganze wurde aber noch mal übertroffen, von dem Mitsubishi, der 2km neben mir her fuhr damit die Kinder auf dem Rücksitz das alte Auto durch die offene Seitenscheibe schauen konnten.

A day like in the zoo - only that the model T is the animal in the zoo.
All day long the Model T had to serve for photo shootings of the passers-by. Probably the car is the most photographed motive in Saarbrücken. A boy who really wanted to know what it costs to be driven around in the car and in the end sent his mother to ask for the price.
But the whole thing was surpassed by the Mitsubishi, which drove 2km next to me so that the children in the back seat could look at the old car through the open side window.

322. Tag - Model T Ford Owners @ Facebook

Ab und zu schreibe ich einen kleinen Artikel auf Facebook zum Model T und dem Blog. Ich habe heute das Problem mit dem undichten Benzinhahn beschrieben und um Rat gefragt. Kann man das reparieren?
Die Reaktionen und die Hilfsbereitschaft sind überwältigend. Den Benzinhahn kann man offensichtlich sehr einfach abdichten, indem man ihn in den Sitz einschleift. Das werde ich direkt mal ausprobieren, wenn der Tank wieder etwas leerer ist.
Hier möchte ich allen in der Facebook Gruppe danken, die immer bereit sind andere zu unterstützen und mit Rat zu helfen.

Every now and then I write a small article on Facebook about the Model T and the blog. Today I described the problem with the leaking fuel tap and asked for advice. Is it possible to fix it?
The reactions and the helpfulness are overwhelming. Apparently the fuel cock can be sealed very easily by looping it into the seat. I'll try that right away when the tank is a little emptier again.

320. Tag - Verbogener Kotflügel / Bent fender

Heute war ein anstrengender Tag. Während ich noch an der Treppe arbeite, laufen ein unglaubliche Menge an Leuten vorbei. Es gibt kaum eine Minute in der niemand das Auto fotografiert. Leider gibt es auch viele Menschen die sich auf das Trittbrett stellen oder ins Auto steigen wollen um Fotos zu machen. Ich kann aber nicht nur auf das Auto aufpassen, sonst wird die Treppe nie fertig. Irgendwann hat sich wohl auch jemand auf den Kotflügel gesetzt. Sehr ärgerlich.

Today was a busy day. While I'm still working on the stairs, an incredible amount of people walk by. There is hardly a minute in which no one takes pictures of the car. Unfortunately, there are also many people who want to stand on the running board or get into the car to take pictures. But I can't just watch the car, otherwise the stairs will never be finished. At some point, someone probably also sat on the fender. Very annoying.

317. Tag - Das erste Eis / The first ice cream

Heute habe ich das erste Eis dieses Jahr bekommen und habe versucht es im Model T zu essen. 

Au dem Weg nach Hause treffe ich Salvatore. Salvatore hat die beste mobile Eisdiele in Saarbrücken. Bis letztes Jahr ist er noch in einem Volkswagen T3 gefahren, dieser musste er aber leider abgeben und fährt jetzt einen jüngeren VW Bus.
Today I got the first ice cream of this year and tried to eat it in the Model T. 
On the way home I meet Salvatore. Salvatore has the best mobile ice cream parlor in Saarbrücken. Until last year he drove a Volkswagen T3, but unfortunately he had to give it up and now drives a younger VW Bus.

Ich bat ihn mir sein bestes Eis zu geben, worauf er meinte alle Sorten seien sehr gut. Das stimmt auch. Salvatore hat mir dann seine Auswahl angeboten.
I asked him to give me his best ice cream, whereupon he said all varieties were very good. That is also true. Salvatore then offered me his selection.

Der Versuch das Eis im Auto zu essen ging dann aber leider nicht so gut aus.

312. Tag - Baue eine Treppe und lerne / Build stairs and learn

Heute ging es nicht darum Auto zu fahren oder zu reparieren, sondern eine Treppe zu bauen. Doch da das Model T direkt daneben stand wurde es doch irgendwie ein Model-T Tag. Die Gespräche der Passanten sind schon bemerkenswert. Die Krönung war eine Frau, welche das Auto ins 16. oder 17. Jahrhundert datierte. Was so alt, das wusste ich gar nicht! 😕

Gab es da nicht noch die Azteken und Inka in Amerika? Und dann kamen die Spanier.
Das 17. Jahrhundert war dann die große Zeit der Seefahrer. Die Segelschiffe, welche die Welt veränderten waren gigantisch im Vergleich zum Model-T. Wer hätte gedacht, dass 300 Jahre später dieses kleine Auto die Welt weitaus mehr verändern wird, als irgend etwas davor.

Today it was not about driving or repairing a car, but building a staircase. But since the Model T was standing right next to it, it somehow became a Model T day. The conversations of the passers-by were remarkable. The crowning glory was a woman who dated the car to the 16th or 17th century. What so old, I did not know at all! 😕

Weren't there the Aztecs and Incas in the Americas? And then came the Spanish.

Then the 17th century was the great time of the sailors. The sailing ships that changed the world were gigantic compared to the Model-T. Who would have thought that 300 years later, this little car would change the world far more than anything before it.

302. Tag - Sitin

Kann ein Schild wie dieses Leute davon abhalten ihre Kinder in fremde Autos zu sitzen oder diese einfach auf dem Auto rumklettern zu lassen? Mein Model T hatte mal so ein Schild an der Windschutzscheibe. Ich habe es entfernt, da ich mir nicht vorstellen konnte, dass so ein Hinweis notwendig wäre. 
Was heute passiert ist war aber die Krönung solcher Vorfälle. 
Eine Mutter stellt ihr Kind auf das Trittbrett um ein Photo zu machen. Dann fängt das Kind an auf den Kotflügel zu klettern und sitzt kurze Zeit später auf der Motorhaube. Die Mutter schaut zu und macht einfach nichts. Spinnen die denn?

Can a sign like this stop people from sitting their kids in other people's cars or just letting them climb on top of the car? My Model T once had a sign like this on the windshield. I removed it because I couldn't imagine that such a notice would be necessary.
But what happened today was the culmination of such incidents.
A mother puts her child on the running board to take a photo. Then the child starts to climb on the fender and a short time later sits on the hood. The mother watches and does nothing. Are they crazy?

301. Tag - Das ist eine Kutsche Mama / This is a carriage mom

 

Mama zu Kind: "Schau mal ein schönes altes Auto!"
Kind zu Mama: " Das ist eine Kutsche, Mama."

Sonst ist nicht viel heute passiert. Außer wieder viele Menschen einen kurzen Moment lang glücklich gemacht, wie zum Beispiel die beiden Radfahrer in dem Video.

Mom to child: "Look at a nice old car!"
Child to Mom: "That's a carriage, Mom."

Not much else happened today. Except again made many people happy for a brief moment, like the two cyclists in the video.

294. Tag - Dachreparatur / Top Repair

Stell dir vor es regnet Mistgabeln, die Welt geht unter und dein Dach hat ein Loch. Das Wasser wird literweise reinlaufen. Hier ist das Loch:

Da hilft nur ein Besuch beim Profi.

Wodurch zeichnet sich ein Autosattler aus? Richtig, er hat eine große Leiter.
What distinguishes a car saddler? That's right, he has a big ladder.

Und er hat ein super Klebeband.
And he has a super tape.

Das Loch wird von innen über das Loch geklebt. Damit kann das Dach nicht mehr weiter einreißen.
The hole is glued over the hole from the inside. This prevents the roof from tearing further.

Sobald die Regenzeit vorbei ist, versuche ich noch das Loch von außen etwas auszubessern.

Nach der Reparatur ist kein Regenwasser mehr in den Wagen gelangt. Das Wasser, welches davor bis fast ans Lenkrad reichte, ist wohl durch die Bodenbretter abgeflossen. 😁
After the repair, no more rainwater got into the car. The water, which previously reached almost to the steering wheel, has probably drained off through the floorboards. 😁

Wenn wir schon mal beim Reparieren sind, können wir auch gerade den Riss im Polster zukleben.

Hierzu wird ein Spezialkleber aus der Schuhindustrie verwendet. Er kommt von der Pirmasenser Firma Kömmerling und hat den lustigen Namen Kövulfix. Bei Kömmerling habe ich als Student eine Studienarbeit zum Thema Glas mit Silikon kleben gemacht. Kömmerling hat sehr gute Produkte.
While we are at the repair, we can also just glue the tear in the pad.

A special adhesive from the shoe industry is used for this. It comes from the Pirmasens-based company Kömmerling and has the funny name Kövulfix. When I was a student at Kömmerling, I did a study project on bonding glass with silicone. Kömmerling has very good products.

Nach den Reparaturen ist noch Zeit ein interessantes Kundenfahrzeug anzuschauen. Ein hervorragend restaurierter Scania.
After the repairs there is still time to look at an interesting customer vehicle. A superbly restored Scania.

291. Tag - Kannst du mich abschleppen? / Can you tow me?

"Ich bin liegengeblieben. Kannst du mich abschleppen?"
"Klar, ich komme mit dem Model T."
"I'm broken down. Can you tow me?"
"Sure, I'll come with the Model T."

Markus hat heute eine Brücke abgebaut und ein paar Kranwagen kommen lassen.

Ich finde es beeindruckend, welche Entwicklung zwischen den beiden Fahrzeugen steckt.

Markus dismantled a bridge today and had a couple of crane trucks come in.

I find it impressive the development between the two vehicles.

271. Tag - Nicht mehr allein / No longer alone

Ab heute bin ich nicht mehr allein auf der Straße. Ich bin heute einem Käfer und einem Jaguar E-Type Coupe begegnet. Außerdem gab es noch einen Porsche 944, Toyota MR2 und einem Audi 100 aus den 80er. 

Da ist aber noch etwas passiert: Ich habe die 2000km heute erreicht. Seit dem Anfang des Blogs bin ich jetzt 2033km mit dem Model T gefahren.
As of today, I am no longer alone on the road. I encountered a Beetle and a Jaguar E-Type Coupe today. There was also a Porsche 944, Toyota MR2 and an Audi 100 from the 80s. But something else happened: I reached the 2000km today. Since the beginning of the blog I have now driven 2033km with the Model T.

269. Tag - Klingt so ein Motorschaden? / Is that what engine damage sounds like?

Eigentlich sollte heute ein ganz normaler Freitag sein. Ich wollte jemand besuchen und zur Arbeit fahren. Insgesamt 29km bei bestem Wetter.
Unterwegs gab es eine kleine lustige Szene mit Hund.
Actually, today was supposed to be a normal Friday. I wanted to visit someone and drive to work. A total of 29km in the best weather.
On the way there was a small funny scene with dog.

Und dann der große Schreck. Klingt so ein kapitaler Motorschaden?
And then the big shock. Is that what a major engine failure sounds like?

Sofort anhalten und schauen wo das Wasser oder Öl rausläuft. Da ist aber kein Öl, auch kein Wasser. Stattdessen macht die Tachowelle eine lustige Figur. Da das Tachogetriebe gerade ausgebaut ist, hängt die Tachowelle nur mit einem Kabelbinder an der Achse. Nur, der Kabelbinder ist verschwunden und die Welle hat sich zwischen dem großen Zahnrad des Tachoantriebes und dem Rad verfangen und schlägt an die Speichen des Zahnrades. Es ist kein Schaden entstanden, es war nur ein großer Schreck.
Stop immediately and look where the water or oil is running out. But there is no oil, and no water either. Instead, the speedometer cable cuts a funny figure. Since the speedometer gear is just removed, the speedometer cable hangs only with a cable tie on the axle. Only, the cable tie is gone and the shaft has gotten caught between the large gear of the speedometer drive and the wheel and is hitting the spokes of the gear. No damage has been done, it was just a big scare.

Zur Weiterfahrt lege ich die Tachowelle unter die Blattfeder und über die Achse. Leider funktioniert das nur eine kurze Zeit. 
To continue driving, I put the speedometer cable under the leaf spring and over the axle. Unfortunately, this only works for a short time. 

Dann muss ich die Tachowelle doch mit Kabelbinder fixieren. Kabelbinder sind im Moment die größte Abweichung vom Originalzustand des Wagens.
Then I have to fix the speedometer cable with cable ties after all. Cable ties are the biggest deviation from the original state of the car at the moment.

Was ist sonst noch passiert? Heute wurde ich zweimal gefragt, ob der Wagen auf der Autobahn fahren darf. Ja klar!

268. Tag - Die kleinste Tankstelle in der Stadt / The smallest gas station in the city

Ich glaube heute die perfekte Tankstelle für mein Model T gefunden zu haben. Vielleicht sogar die beste Tankstelle für jeden hier. Es ist nicht so, dass sie besseres Benzin für ein Auto aus 1916 haben oder etwa der Zapfhahn besser passen würde. Nein es geht um die Tankstelle als ganzes. Es ist eine freie Tankstelle und sieht schon mal völlig anders aus, als die großen Tankstellenbetreiber in blau, gelb oder grün.
Diese Tankstelle hat genau eine Zapfsäule an der zwei Autos gleichzeitig tanken können. Sie gehört zu einer kleinen Werkstatt mitten in Bischmisheim, einem Stadtteil von Saarbrücken. Das ganze Umfeld ist eigentlich ein Dorf. Die Zapfsäule hat kein Stahldach wie es sonst üblich ist, sondern eine Zeltkonstruktion.
Eigentlich sieht sie genau so aus, wie die Tankstellen aus den alten Filmen. Auch in den Filmen gab es immer nur eine Zapfsäule, die von einer kleinen Werkstatt betrieben wurde. Zum Beispiel in "The Great Gatsby". Und genau so ist es auch hier. Besonders schön ist die Lage an einer kleinen Straßenkreuzung. Gegenüber gibt es dann auch noch ein kleiner Laden in dem man ... hmmmm ich habe gar nicht richtig geschaut, da ich leider nicht soviel Zeit hatte. Das mache ich dann mal beim nächsten Tanken.
Das Model T an der Tankstelle war ein schönes Bild.

I think I found the perfect gas station for my Model T today. Maybe even the best gas station for everyone here. It's not that they have better gas for a 1916 car or, say, that the nozzle would fit better. No it's about the gas station as a whole. It is a free gas station and looks completely different than the big gas station operators in blue, yellow or green.
This gas station has exactly one pump where two cars can fill up at the same time. It belongs to a small garage in the middle of Bischmisheim, a district of Saarbrücken. The whole area is actually a village. The gas pump does not have a steel roof as is usually the case, but a tent construction.
Actually, it looks exactly like the gas stations from the old movies. Also in the movies there was always only one gas pump, which was operated by a small workshop. For example, in "The Great Gatsby." And that's exactly how it is here. Especially nice is the location at a small street crossing. Opposite there is also a small store where you can ... hmmmm I have not really looked, because I unfortunately did not have so much time. I'll do that at the next refueling.

Zu einer solch kultigen Tankstelle und Werkstatt gehören natürlich auch die entsprechenden Fahrzeuge dazu. Ein alter Golf und ein Oldtimer Traktor. Der Traktor hat schon gewisse Designmerkmale mit dem Model T gemein. Ein hervorragendes Ambiente um mit dem Inhaber etwas über Oldtimer zu fachsimpeln. Zum Beispiel warum war eigentlich früher Blei im Benzin?
Such an iconic gas station and workshop naturally includes the appropriate vehicles. An old Golf and a vintage tractor. The tractor has certain design features in common with the Model T. Wenn der Tank voll ist geht es natürlich zum Bezahlen. Die Preise sind super und günstiger als bei den großen Tankstellenketten. Aber wo bringt man das Geld nach dem Tanken hin? In der Werkstatt ist gerade niemand und die kleine Tür führt nicht zur Kasse. Die Auflösung: es ist die linke Tür und schon steht man im Kassenraum. Die Leite sind super nett und es gibt einen jungen Hund. Der ist aber völlig aus dem Häuschen und es ist ganz schwierig ein scharfes Bild von ihm zu machen.
When the tank is full, of course, it goes to pay. The prices are great and cheaper than at the big gas station chains. But where do you take the money after filling up? Wenn sie jetzt die Möglichkeit haben zwischen einer solch außergewöhnlichen Tankstelle mit Hund oder einer Hochglanztankstelle mit Kaffeeautomat in den Farben blau, gelb oder grün zu wählen, was würden sie tun, junger Hund oder teurer Kaffee aus dem Automaten?

Falls sie sich für bei dem nächsten Tankstellenbesuch für den jungen Hund entscheiden, dann nicht zwischen 12:00 und 13:00. Da gibt es nämlich eine Mittagspause. Ansonsten ist die Tankstelle wirklich gut besucht. Es gab immer mindestens ein Auto an der Säule.

Aber leider gibt es auch was nicht so schönes zu berichten. Das ist der Geiselberg, über den man nach Bichmisheim kommt. Über 1km geht es steil bergauf. 7° oder 12% Steigung. Da kommt ein Model T ganz schön ins schwitzen.  Aber oben angekommen gibt es ja was zu trinken für das Auto.

If they decide for the young dog at the next gas station visit, then not between 12:00 and 13:00, because there is a lunch break. Otherwise, the gas station is really well attended. There was always at least one car at the gas pump.

But unfortunately there is also something not so nice to report. This is the Geiselberg, over which one comes to Bichmisheim. Over 1km it goes steeply uphill. 7° or 12% gradient. A Model T can really work up a sweat. But at the top there is something to drink for the car.
