137. Tag - Zündkerzen / Spark Plugs

Der Motor läuft und der Lüfter dreht jetzt ohne stehenzubleiben. Allerdings hat der Motor noch einen hohen Anteil mechanischer Geräusche. Da werde ich mich morgen drum kümmern.
The engine runs and the fan now rotates without stopping. However, the engine still has a high percentage of mechanical noise. I will take care of that tomorrow.

Zuerst kümmere ich mich um die Zündkerzen. Die Zündkerzenmulde des zweiten Zylinders ist immer mit Öl verspritzt. Offensichtlich ist das Gewinde der Zündkerze nicht dicht.

Ich werde die Zündkerze erst mal durch eine neue austauschen. Die neue Champion Zündkerze hat ein unterschiedliches Design als die als die alte Motorcraft Zündkerze. Bei der Champion Zündkerze fängt das Gewinde nicht direkt an der Elektrode an. Wird sie darum tiefer in den Zylinder hereinragen?
I will replace the spark plug with a new one for now. The new Champion spark plug has a different design than the old Motorcraft spark plug. On the Champion spark plug, the thread does not start directly at the electrode. Is that why it will go deeper into the cylinder?

Die neue Champion Zündkerze scheint dicht zu sein. Beim ersten Testlauf habe ich noch keine Öl in der Zündkerzenmulde gesehen. Hoffentlich bleibt das so.
The new Champion spark plug seems to be tight. On the first test run, I haven't seen any oil in the spark plug cavity yet. Hopefully it stays that way.

Es fällt allerdings auf, dass sich die neuen Zündkerzen unterschiedlich tief in die Gewinde drehen lassen. Ob das nicht Einfluss auf den Motorlauf nimmt?
However, it is noticeable that the new spark plugs can be turned to different depths in the threads. I wonder if that doesn't affect the engine running.

Trotz allen offenen Fragen läuft der Motor.

115. Tag - LED Scheinwerfer / LED Headlights

Heute habe ich den Spannungswandler eingebaut. Er wandelt die 6 Volt auf 12 Volt. Damit funktionieren die LED Lampen. Ich muss jetzt zwar die Scheinwerfer einzel schalten, kann damit aber nachts  wesentlich länger fahren. Allerdings sieht das Licht doch wesentlich anders aus. Es hat einen kälteren Farbton und man erkennt deutlich die einzelnen LED Punkte. Naja, bis der Magneto repariert ist kann man das so lassen.
Today I installed the voltage transformer. It converts the 6 Volt to 12 Volt. So the LED lamps work. Now I have to switch the headlights individually, but I can drive much longer at night. But the light looks much different. It has a colder color tone and you can clearly see the individual LED points. Well, until the magneto is repaired you can leave it like this.

113. Tag - LED Lampen / LED Lights

LED Lampe kaufen, Scheinwerfer öffnen, LED rein, Scheinwerfer schließen und schon kann ich 3mal so lang mit Batteriestrom in der Nacht fahren. So habe ich mir das vorgestellt am 111. Tag des Blogs. 
Es war aber nichts. Dunkel war es. Sehr, sehr dunkel.
Buy LED lamp, open headlight, put LED in, close headlight and I can drive 3 times as long with battery power at night. This is how I imagined it on the 111th day of the blog.
But it was nothing. It was dark. Very, very dark.

Meine erste Vermutung war, dass die LED entgegen der Spezifikation (6-30 Volt) nicht mit 6 Volt funktioniert. Das Problem hatte ich schon bei meinem Motorrad.

Ein zweites Problem könnte auch sein, dass die LED falsch angeschlossen habe. Also habe ich heute die die LED Lampe durchgemessen.
Dass ein China-Produkt nicht der eigenen Spezifikation der Betriebsspannung entspricht, habe ich schon überwunden. Was ich jetzt aber festgestellt habe schießt den Vogel ab.
My first guess was that contrary to the specification (6-30 volts) the LED does not work with 6 volts.  I already had this problem with my motorcycle.

A second problem could also be that the LED was connected incorrectly. So I measured the LED lamp today. 

I have already overcome the fact that a China product does not correspond to the own specification of the operating voltage.But what I have found now, however, shoots the bird (Can you say that in English so? I mean it is crazy.)

Mein Testaufbau ist etwas improvisiert. Ich habe ein 18 Volt Netzteil und ein Draht zur Verfügung. Der Draht verbinde ich mit dem innenliegenden Stecker Pluspol.

Meine Erwartung ist, dass
- die LED über die beide Kontakte funktioniert.
- die Polarität keine Rolle spielen sollte. Normalerweise haben LED eine Polarität, aber der Sockel hat die beiden Stifte auf der gleichen Höhe und kann darum um 180° gedreht in zwei Positionen eingebaut werden. Das bedeutet, dass der Sockel keine definierte Polarität ermöglicht.

- der Sockel keine Funktion haben sollte, also nicht mit dem Minus-Kontakt verbunden ist. Wenn das so wäre, würde man in der falschen Einbauposition einen Kurzschluss verursachen.
My test setup is somewhat improvised. I have an 18 Volt power supply and a wire available. I connect the wire to the inside plug plus pole.

My expectation is that 

- the LED with the two contacts is working. 

- the polarity should not matter. Normally LEDs have one polarity, but the base has the two pins at the same height and can therefore be installed in two positions turned by 180°. This means that the socket does not allow a defined polarity.

- the socket should have no function, i.e. it is not connected to the minus contact. If this were the case, you would cause a short circuit in the wrong installation position.

Die LED funktioniert nicht wenn man sie über die beiden Kontakte anschließt. Unabhängig von der Polarität.
The LED does not work if you connect it via the two contacts. Regardless of the polarity.

Die LED funktioniert mit dem Pluspol auf einem Kontakt und dem Minuspol auf dem Sockel. Das ist schon mal nicht schlecht.
The LED works with the positive pole on one contact and the negative pole on the base. This is not bad.

Mit dem Pluspol auf dem anderen Kontakt funktioniert die LED nicht. 
With the positive pole on the other contact the LED will not work. 

Das bedeutet, dass der eine Kontakt gar keine Funktion hat. Zur Sicherheit überprüfe ich noch ob die Kontakte miteinander oder die Kontakte mir dem Sockel verbunden sind. Das ist nicht der Fall.
This means that the one contact has no function at all. To be on the safe side I check if the contacts are connected to each other or to the socket. This is not the case.

Dieser Aufbau der LED entspricht nicht der Funktion des Sockels. Der Pluspol der LED ist nicht markiert und es gibt auch kein Bedienungsanleitung dazu. Das ist sehr ärgerlich.

Das Positive ist, dass die LED kein Kurzschluss verursachen kann und mit einer höheren Spannung und der richtigen Einbauposition auch funktionieren kann.

Der nächste Schritt ist der Einbau eines Spannungswandlers (6 Volt auf 12 Volt). Damit sollte es dann funktionieren.
This construction of the LED does not correspond to the function of the socket. The positive pole of the LED is not marked and there are no operating instructions. This is very annoying.

The positive thing is that the LED can't cause a short circuit and can also work with a higher voltage and the correct installation position.

The next step is to install a voltage converter (6 volts to 12 volts). With this it should work then.

112. Tag - Alte Zündspule / Old Coil

Im Moment bin ich sehr mit dem Ausbau der Wohnung beschäftigt und konnte noch nicht an die Ventileinstellung des Motors gehen. So beschäftige ich mich gerade mit den kleinen Dingen des Model-Ts. Hier ist die alte Zündspule, die zwar noch einen Zündfunken gebracht hatte, der aber etwas schwach und immer wieder unterbrochen war. Ich wollte die Spule zur Reparatur bei Michael Deichmann schicken und habe sie erst mal durchgemessen.
At the moment I am very busy with the finishing of the apartment and could not yet go to the valve adjustment of the engine. So I am busy with the little things of the Model-T. Here is the old ignition coil, which still brought an ignition spark, but it was a bit weak and always interrupted. I wanted to send the coil to Michael Deichmann for repair and first I measured it.

Der obere (auf dem Bild rechte) Anschluss ist die Primärwicklung und der untere (auf dem Bild linke) Anschluss die Sekundärwicklung.
The upper (right in the picture) terminal is the primary winding and the lower (left in the picture) terminal is the secondary winding.

Der untere Kontakt ist der Minuspol.
The lower contact is the negative pole.

Die Primärwicklung hat Durchgang und einen Widerstand von 5 Ohm.
The primary winding has continuity and a resistance of 5 Ohm.

Leider hat die Sekundärwicklung keinen Durchgang. Trotzdem funktioniert die Spule noch. Das wurde so erklärt, dass der Spulendraht der Hochspannungsspule unterbrochen ist, so dass man zwar keinen Durchgang mehr messen kann, aber der Strom noch überspringen kann.
Unfortunately the secondary winding has no electrical continuity. Nevertheless the coil still works. This was explained by the fact that the coil wire of the high voltage coil is broken, so that one cannot measure any more continuity, but the current can still skip.

Damit ist die Zündspule leider nicht mehr zu reparieren, da man alle Teile austauschen kann, nur nicht die eigentliche Spule.

So the ignition coil is unfortunately no longer repairable, because you can replace all parts, except the actual coil.

111. Tag - Scheinwerfer / Head Light

Der kaputte Magneto beschäftigt mich ganz schön. Um das Problem zu umgehen, bis ich zur Reparatur des Motors komme, habe ich schon eine zweite Batterie eingebaut um die Zündung mit 12 Volt, statt 6 Volt zu betreiben. Der Motor läuft damit auch besser, wie er auch auf der höheren Magneto Spannung tun würde. 
Jetzt wollte ich noch eine zweite Sache verbessern und die Scheinwerfer auf LED umbauen, damit ich länger mit der Batterie in der Dunkelheit fahren kann. Tatsächlich gibt es passende LED Leuchtmittel, die mit 6 bis 30 Volt betrieben werden können. Damit sollte es doch funktionieren. Die LED Glühbirnen sind schnell eingebaut und - nichts! Die dinger funktionieren nicht. Vielleicht macht die Fassung, welche ja über die Masse eine Verbindung zum Minuspol der Batterie hat Probleme. Vielleicht funktionieren die LED Birnen aber auch entgegen der technische Spezifikation nicht mit 6 Volt. Das gleiche Problem hatte ich schon mal bei meinem Motorrad. Da brauchte ich noch einen Umwandler von 6 auf 12 Volt, damit die angebliche 6 Volt LED funktionierte.
The broken magneto keeps me pretty busy. To avoid the problem until I get to the repair of the engine, I have already installed a second battery to run the ignition with 12 volts instead of 6 volts. This makes the engine run better, as it would on the higher magneto voltage.
Now I wanted to improve a second thing and change the headlights to LED, so I can drive longer in the dark with the battery. Actually there are suitable LED bulbs which can be operated with 6 to 30 volts. So it should work after all. The LED bulbs are quickly installed and - nothing! These things do not work. Maybe the socket, which has a connection to the negative pole of the battery via the ground, causes problems. Maybe the LED bulbs do not work with 6 volts, contrary to the technical specification. I had the same problem with my motorcycle. There I needed a converter from 6 to 12 volts, so that the alleged 6 volt LED worked. 

Wenn die LED am Ende funktionieren sollte, wird es aber auch nur eine vorübergehende Lösung sein. Ich möchte den Wagen eigentlich nicht mit technischen Lösungen verbessern, die es 1916 noch gar nicht gab. Die LED ist nur eine vorübergehende Lösung, bis der Magneto wieder funktioniert.
But if the LED should work in the end, it will only be a temporary solution. I don't really want to improve the car with technical solutions that didn't even exist in 1916. The LED is only a temporary solution until the magneto is working again. 

Allerdings hatte der erfolglose Umbauversuch doch was gutes. Ich habe nicht immer über den Federring im Scheinwerfer gewundert. Irgendwie hat es keinen Sinn gemacht, wie er an den Enden eingehakt werden soll. Heute habe ich das Problem verstanden. 
However, the unsuccessful conversion attempt had something good after all. I was not always surprised about the headlight retaining wire in the headlight. Somehow it didn't make sense how it should be hooked in at the ends. Today I understood the problem. 

Der Federring gehört gar nicht zwischen den Reflektor und das Scheinwerferglas, sondern hinter den Reflektor. Und jetzt kommt die große Überraschung: Da ist schon einer!
The headlight retaining wire does not belong between the reflector and the headlight glass, but behind the reflector. And now comes the big surprise: There is already one!

 

Der Federring vor dem Reflektor ist also nicht nur an der falschen Stelle, sondern auch zuviel. Das erklärt gleich drei Dinge:

- Hinter dem Reflektor, lässt sich der Federring auch an den Enden verschließen.

- Wenn der überflüssige Federring weg ist, lässt sich auf einmal auch der Messingring richtig montieren.

- Jetzt macht auch die weiße Dichtung auf dem Reflektor Sinn. Jetzt wird nämlich der Reflektor durch den Federring an das Scheinwerferglas und nicht davon weg gedrückt.

Es ist schon erstaunlich, wie auf einmal alles funktioniert, wenn man es nur richtig macht. :-)

Jetzt habe ich zwei Ersatzfederringe. Vielleicht brauche ich die ja mal in 30 Jahren.
So the headlight retaining wire in front of the reflector is not only in the wrong place, but also too much. That explains three things:
- Behind the reflector, the spring ring can also be closed at the ends.
- When the superfluous headlight retaining wire is gone, the head light door can also be fitted correctly.
- Now the white seal on the reflector makes sense. Now the reflector is pressed by the headlight retaining wire to the headlight glass and not away from it.
It is amazing how everything works all of a sudden, if you do it right. :-)
Now I have two spare spring washers. Maybe I will need them in 30 years.

102. Tag - Neue Batterie / New Battery

Heute ist Elektrik Tag. Ich habe eine zweite Batterie (12 Volt) in den neuen Batteriekasten eingebaut. Die Batterie soll die Zündung betreiben, bis der Magneto repariert ist und ist direkt an die Spulenkastenklemme des Magnetos angeschlossen. 
Today is electrics day. I installed a second battery (12 Volt) in the new battery box. The battery is to power the ignition until the magneto is repaired and is connected directly to the coil box terminal of the magneto. 

Den Magneto habe ich abgeklemmt, damit es keinen Kurzschluss gibt oder die Batterie die Spulen bestromt. Den Magneto habe ich mit einem Ohm-Meter durchgemessen um den Fehler einzugrenzen.
Es gibt zwei Möglichkeiten: Entweder ist der Stromkreis der Spulen unterbrochen oder es gibt einen Kurzschluss gegen Masse. Eine Unterbrechung des Kreises könnte entweder an den Spulen oder am Anschluss auf dem Getriebe vorliegen. Wenn es nur der Anschluss ist, kann der Fehler vermutlich leicht behoben werden. Ein Kurzschluss kann durch einen metallischen Gegenstand zwischen Spulen und Gehäuse entstehen. Das hatte ich schon mal an dem originalen Motor.
Die Messung ergibt einen Widerstand von 0,8 Ohm zur Masse. Das bedeutet, dass der Fehler keine Unterbrechung des Stromkreises ist. Ein Kurzschluss muss nicht zu 0 Ohm führen. Es hängt davon ab, wo sich der Kurzschluss in den 16 seriell verbundenen Spulen befindet. Aber darum kümmere ich mich später. Jetzt ist es erst mal interessant wie der Wagen mit 12 Volt statt 6 Volt auf der Zündung läuft.
I disconnected the magneto to avoid a short circuit or to prevent the battery from energizing the coils. I measured the magneto with an Ohm meter to limit the error. 
There are two possibilities: Either the circuit of the coils is broken or there is a short circuit to ground. An interruption of the circuit could be either at the coils or at the connection on the gear. If it is only the connection, the fault can probably be easily corrected. A short circuit can be caused by a metallic object between the coils and the housing. I had this before on the original motor. 
The measurement gives a resistance of 0.8 Ohm to ground. This means that the error is not an interruption of the circuit. A short circuit does not have to lead to 0 Ohm. It depends on where the short circuit is in the 16 serially connected coils. But I will take care of that later. Now it is interesting to see how the car runs with 12 volts instead of 6 volts on the ignition.

The first thing you notice is the much louder buzzing of the ignition coils at 12 Volts.

Jetzt wird es spannend: Der Test des Motorlaufs im Stand und im Fahren. 
Ja der Motor läuft schon im Stand erkennbar runder mit 12 Volt. Bei 6 Volt hat er gerne mal kurze Aussetzer. Nicht so stark, dass es Fehlzündungen gibt, aber eben doch, dass es den Motorlauf negativ beeinflusst. Beim Fahren kann man das gleiche beobachten. Mit 12 Volt zieht der Wagen sauber hoch, wo er mit 6 Volt etwas unsauber läuft.
Der heutige Model-T Tag war sehr erfolgreich :-)
Now it's getting exciting: Testing the engine running while stationary and while driving. 
Yes, the engine runs noticeably smoother at 12 volts even when stationary. At 6 volts it likes to have short interruptions. Not so much that there are misfires, but still that it has a negative influence on the engine running. You can observe the same thing while driving. With 12 volts the car pulls up cleanly, where it runs a bit unclean with 6 volts.
The Model-T day today was very successful :-)

98. Tag - Batteriekasten / Batterie Box

Mit dem Umstellen der Uhren auf Winterzeit ist es nicht mehr möglich ohne Licht durch den Tag zu kommen. Es wird dringend Zeit Energieversorgung zu sichern. Ganzjährig Sommerzeit würde ich irgendwie besser finden.
When the clocks are set to winter time, it is no longer possible to get through the day without light. It is urgent to secure the energy supply. I would somehow find summer time better all year round.

Es muss eine Batteriebox her in der ich eine zweite Batterie verstauen kann. Die Batterie wird gerne unter den hinteren Boden auf der linken Seite montiert. Es gibt extra einen Batterie halter aus Bandstahl. Leider gerade nicht lieferbar. Darum baue ich einen neuen Boden mit einem Holzkasten drunter. Die Box soll möglichst groß werden, damit ich außer der Batterie auch noch andere Dinge darin unterbringen kann. Den Boden baue ich aus einer 15mm Siebdruckplatte, den Kasten aus 18mm. Da ich nicht weiß, welche Kräfte eine Batterie auf einem holprigen Feldweg auf die Box ausübt, baue ich lieber etwas robuster.
I need a battery box in which I can store a second battery. The battery will be mounted under the rear floor on the left side. There is an extra battery holder made of steel strip. Unfortunately not available at the moment. Therefore I build a new floor with a wooden box underneath. The box should be as big as possible so that I can store other things besides the battery. The bottom is made of a 15mm wood plate, the box of 18mm. Since I don't know what forces a battery will exert on the box on a bumpy dirt road, I prefer to build something more robust.

Als es ans Einbauen in den Wagen ging war es bereits dunkel. Um so größer war der Schreck, als ich feststellte, dass die Box 5mm zu breit geworden ist und nun zwischen Kardanwelle und Längsträger eingeklemmt ist. Also musste ich die Box noch mal nacharbeiten. Jetzt sieht sie von unten nicht mehr ganz so schön aus., von oben sieht man es aber nicht. Naja, es war der erste Entwurf und ich habe einiges in Sachen Holzkistenkonstruktion und -bau gelernt. Bilder vom Einbau gibt es morgen. Heute war es zu dunkel.
When it was time to install it into the car it was already dark. The more frightened I was, when I noticed that the box was 5mm too wide and now it is clamped between the propshaft and the side member. So I had to rework the box again. Now it doesn't look so nice from below, but you can't see it from above. Well, it was the first draft and I learned a lot about wooden box design and construction. Pictures of the installation will be available tomorrow. Today it was too dark.

So sieht das dann eingebaut aus. Der Kasten passt genau neben den Längsträger des Chassis.
This is how it looks when it is built in. The box fits exactly next to the longitudinal beam of the chassis.

Leider war er zu nah an der Kardanwelle. Diese ist zwar in einem nicht drehenden Rohr, welches sich aber  vertikal bewegt. Darum musste ich den Kasten an dieser Seite etwas abhobeln. Leider sieht der Kasten jetzt von unten nicht mehr ganz so schön aus. Das schränkt seine Funktion aber nicht ein.
Unfortunately he was too close to the cardan shaft. This is in a non-rotating tube, but it moves vertically. Therefore I had to plane the box a bit on this side. Unfortunately the box doesn't look so nice from below anymore. But this does not limit its function.

So sieht das von oben aus. Das Brett hätte ich besser von unten gesägt um die Ausbrüche zu vermeiden. Vielleicht werde ich das ganze noch schwarz lackieren, dann sieht es besser aus.

Noch ein Passgenauer Deckel zum Verschließen des Kastens und die Gummimatte drüber. Das ist dann schon komfortabler als der originale Batteriehalter. Hier brauch man nicht unter das Auto um and die Batterie zu kommen.
Another perfectly fitting lid to close the box and the rubber mat over it. This is already more comfortable than the original battery holder. Here you don't need to go under the car to get the battery.

Ich hätte ja noch Spaß an weiteren Stauräumen. Unter dem Auto ist viel Platz. Am einfachsten wäre es über dem Auspuff. Ich muss mal dort die Temperatur messen.
I would still have fun with more storage space. There is a lot of space under the car. The easiest place would be above the exhaust. I have to measure the temperature there.

Wenn ich gerade unter dem Auto liege, der Tank ist immer noch dicht. :-)
When I am lying under the car, the tank is still tight. :-)
