343. Tag - Benzinhahn Reparatur / Fuel cock repairsammlers

In der Facebook Gruppe "Model T Ford Owners" hat man mir eine hervorragende Anleitung gegeben, wie ich den Benzinhahn unter dem Tank dicht bekomme. Die Anleitung lautet so:
- Wassersammler ausbauen
- Benzinhahn ausbauen
- Benzinhahn mit Schleifpaste in den Sitz einschleifen (wie bei den Ventilen)
- Benzinhahn und Wassersammler wieder einbauen
Statt einer Ventilschleifpaste habe ich kurzfristig nur eine Polierpaste für Lack bekommen. Da es aber angeblich auch mit Zahnpasta funktioniert, versuche ich es mit der Lackpolitur einfach mal.
In the Facebook group "Model T Ford Owners" I was given excellent instructions on how to get the fuel tap under the tank tight. The instructions read like this:
- Remove sediment bowl assembly
- Remove fuel cock
- Grind fuel cock into seat with abrasive paste (same as valves)
- Reinstall fuel cock and sediment bowl assembly
Instead of a valve grinding paste I only got a polishing paste for varnish at short notice. But since it supposedly also works with toothpaste, I just try it with the lacquer polish.

Zuerst lassen wir das Benzin aus dem Tank laufen und montieren den Wassersammler ab. Da der Ablasshahn etwas verstopft ist, müssen wir etwas nachhelfen.
First, we let the gasoline run out of the tank and dismount the water collector. Since the drain cock is a bit clogged, we have to help a bit.

Beim Herausschrauben des Wassersammlers kommt noch der Rest Benzin aus dem Tank.
When unscrewing the water collector, the rest of the gasoline still comes out of the tank.

Der Benzinhahn ist schnell demontiert.

Mit etwas Schleifpaste und einer Bohrmaschine (Ein Trick aus der Facebookgruppe) lässt sich der Konus schnell einschleifen. 
With some grinding paste and a drill (A trick from the Facebook group), the cone can be quickly ground in.

Wir machen einen ersten Dichtheitstest ohne die Feder zu montieren.
We make a first tightness test without mounting the spring.

Der Benzinhahn scheint dicht zu sein.
The fuel tap seems to be tight.

Auch komplett zusammengebaut ist der Benzinhahn dicht. Wir montieren ihn wieder am Tank na und gereinigt nachdem wir ihn im Eimer mit dem abgelassenen Benzin ausgespült und gereinigt haben. Da kommt eine Menge Dreck heraus. Das Telefon im Eimer dient dem Größenvergleich.
Even completely assembled, the fuel tap is tight. We mount it back on the tank na and cleaned after rinsing and cleaning it in the bucket with the drained gasoline. A lot of dirt comes out of it. The phone in the bucket is for size comparison.

Ich versuche nochmal meinen Kaffeefilter eine sinnvollen Verwendung zu geben. Mit Benzin funktioniert er. Am Ende dauert es mir aber doch zu lange und ich nehme einen Lappen zum Filtern.
I'm trying again to give my coffee filter a useful use. It works with gasoline. In the end, however, it takes me too long and I take a rag to filter.

Auch am Tank montiert scheint der Benzinhahn jetzt dicht zu sein. Ich hoffe, dass der Benzinverbrauch jetzt noch etwas weniger wird, wenn kein Benzin mehr am Benzinhahn verdunstet.
Also mounted on the tank, the fuel tap now seems to be tight. I hope that the gasoline consumption will now be a little less when no more gasoline evaporates at the fuel tap.

342. Tag - Differentialölwechsel / Differential oil change

Mit dem gestern gekauften Fließfett für Getriebe mache ich mich heute an die Arbeit am Differential. Beim Autozubehörhändler habe ich noch eine Handpumpe besorgt um das alte Öl abzupumpen.
With the transmission fluid grease I bought yesterday, I set to work on the differential today. At the car accessories dealer I still got a hand pump to pump out the old oil.

Die Pumpe ist notwendig, da das Differential nur eine Einfüllöffnung, aber keine Ablassöffnung hat. Diese ist schnell geöffnet und die Pumpe in Position gebracht.
The pump is necessary because the differential has only one filler opening, but no drain opening. This is quickly opened and the pump is brought into position.

Das Öl hat viel Abrieb von Buntmetall. Damit ich weiß, wieviel Fett ich danach einfüllen muss, messe ich noch die Menge des entnommenen alten Öls. Es sind 0,4 Liter. 
The oil has a lot of abrasion from non-ferrous metal. So that I know how much grease I have to fill in afterwards, I still measure the amount of the removed old oil. It is 0.4 liters.

Damit ich das Fett besser durch die Einfüllöffnung bekomme, mache ich es in heißem Wasser etwas flüssiger. 
To help me get the grease through the filler hole, I make it a little more liquid in hot water.

Das heiße Fett lässt sich ohne weitere Hilfsmittel gut in das Differential einbringen. Einfach die Öffnung des Beutels auf die Einfüllöffnung des Differential drücken und das Fett hineinpressen. Am Ende habe ich 40g zuviel Fett in das Differential gemacht. Das sollte aber OK sein. Das Fett hat ha gegenüber dem Öl den Vorteil, dass es eben nicht so leicht durch die Achse zu den Bremstrommeln gelangt.
The hot grease can be easily inserted into the differential without any further aids. Simply press the opening of the bag on the filler opening of the differential and press the grease inside. In the end, I put 40g too much grease into the differential. But that should be OK. The grease has ha advantage over the oil that it just does not get through the axle to the brake drums so easily.

341. Tag - Landmaschinenhandel / Agricultural machinery trade

Am Samstag ist die große Fahrt nach Nideggen zur Oldtimer Rally "Eifelrundfahrt 1922". Ich möchte auf eigener Achse hinfahren. 212 km mit vielen Bergen. Es gibt noch viel vorzubereiten. 
Ich möchte noch das Differentialöl wechseln, den Benzinhahn abdichten und die Pleuellager nochmal überprüfen. Ich befürchte, dass ich nicht alles in der verbleibende Zeit schaffe.
Das Differentialöl ist das wichtigste. Es gibt eine Menge Metallabrieb darin. Für das Model T braucht man möglichst dickflüssiges Getriebeöl. Die SAE-Viskositäts­klassen werden seit 1911 von der Society of Automotive Engineers festgelegt. Getriebeöl gibt es in den Viskositätsklassen bis SAE 250. Im normalen Autoteilehandel werden aber nur Viskositätsklassen bis SAE 90 angeboten.
Das ist etwas wenig für das Model T. Also besuche ich unseren Landmaschinenhandel im Dorf. Dort gibt es Fließfett. Das soll die Beste Wahl für mein Differential sein. Außerdem ist ein Landmaschinenhandel ganz im Sinne von Henry Ford, der ja ein Auto konstruiert hat, welches von jedem Dorfschmied repariert werden sollte.
Allerdings ist der Landmaschinenhandel in Kirkel weit entfernt von einem Dorfschmied. Der Handel hat ein großes Lager.

340. Blogwerbung / Blog advertising

Vielleicht sollte ich etwas Werbung für den Blog auf dem Auto machen. Ein kurzer Anruf bei der Werbeagentur ergibt, dass das gar nicht so teuer ist. Ich bestelle zwei Aufkleber für die Seite und einen großen für das Fahrzeugheck.
Maybe I should do some advertising for the blog on the car. A quick call to the advertising agency reveals that it's not that expensive. I order two stickers for the side and a large one for the rear of the car.

 

Die Aufkleber bestehen aus den einzel ausgeschnittenen Buchstaben und Bilder, welche auf einer transparenten Transferfolie positioniert sind. Dadurch muss man nicht jeden einzelnen Buchstaben positionieren. Auf der Rückseite gibt es noch eine weiße Schutzfolie, die das Ankleben verhindert bis alles ausgerichtet ist.
The stickers consist of the individually cut out letters and images, which are positioned on a transparent transfer film. Thus, you do not have to position each individual letter. On the back there is still a white protective film that prevents sticking until everything is aligned.

Mit einem Klebestreifen positioniert man den Aufkleber.
With an adhesive strip you position the sticker.

Jetzt zieht man die weiße Schutzfolie ab und drückt die Aufkleber mit der Transferfolie an das Auto.
Now pull off the white protective film and press the stickers with the transfer film to the car.

Leider habe ich nicht bemerkt, dass ein Teil eines Buchstaben an der Schutzfolie hängen geblieben ist.
Unfortunately, I didn't notice that part of a letter was stuck to the protective film.

Bei dem großen Aufkleber gab es auch ein Problem die Buchstaben ohne Blasen anzubringen. Ich konnte es aber noch korrigieren.
With the large sticker there was also a problem to attach the letters without bubbles. But I was still able to correct it.

339. Tag - Werkstatt mit Stil / Workshop with style

Ich mag kleine Werkstätten mit Charme. In Saarbrücken gibt es eine, die ein Faible für Oldtimer hat. Auto Kappel GmbH in Saarbrücken. Es macht immer wieder Spaß daran vorbei zu fahren und zu sehen welche Autos heute auf dem Hof stehen. Heute stehen zwei Citroen Traction Avant und zwei Citroen DS vor der Werkstatt. Im Schaufenster noch ein Volvo Amazon und ein Citroen CX. Ich weiß bis heute nicht, wie sie die Autos in das Schaufenster bekommen. Es muss sehr viel Aufwand sein, da es keine richtige Einfahrt gibt. Nur die Glastür mit den 3 Stufen davor.

I like small workshops with charm. There is one in Saarbrücken that has a soft spot for classic cars. Auto Kappel GmbH in Saarbrücken. It's always fun to drive by and see what cars are in the yard today. Today there are two Citroen Traction Avant and two Citroen DS in front of the workshop. In the shop window another Volvo Amazon and a Citroen CX. To this day I don't know how they get the cars into the showcase. It must be a lot of effort, because there is no real entrance. Only the glass door with the 3 steps in front of it.

338. Tag - Dichtigkeit Getriebedeckel / Sealing Transmission Cover

Ich bin 15 Minuten nach Montage des Getriebedeckels nach Hause gefahren. Insgesamt nach 40km prüfe ich jetzt ob die Abdichtung des Deckels mit Silikon, aber ohne Papierdichtung funktioniert. Hier das Ergebnis:
I drove home 15 minutes after mounting the gearbox cover. In total after 40km I now check if the sealing of the cover works with silicone but without paper gasket. Here is the result:

 

Der Getriebedeckel ist komplett dicht. Falls sich das Silikon bei der nächsten Wartung sich besser lösen läßt als die Papierdichtung gestern, wird das meine bevorzugte Methode werden diesen Deckel abzudichten.
The gearbox cover is completely sealed. If the silicone comes off better at the next service than the paper gasket did yesterday, this will be my preferred method of sealing this cover.

Das Leben macht Spaß, wenn mal was funktioniert. Und je mehr Erfahrung man hat, desto mehr funktioniert. :-)
