359. Tag - Motor Demontage / Engine disassembly

Zum Transport des Motors werde ich ihn auseinander bauen. ich fange mit dem Krümmer und Vergaser an.
To transport the engine I will disassemble it. i will start with the manifold and carburetor.

Danach wird die Ölwanne entfernt. Da Motor und Getriebe im gleichen Öl laufen, gibt es auch nur eine Ölwanne. Es fällt auf, dass die Schrauben mit nur wenig Drehmoment angeschraubt sind. Vermutlich hat das zusätzliche Silikon auf der Dichtfläche mit der Zeit nachgegeben.
The oil pan is then removed. Since the engine and transmission run in the same oil, there is also only one oil pan. It is noticeable that the screws are screwed on with only little torque. Presumably, the additional silicone on the sealing surface has given way over time.

Mit dem Silikon hat Werner die kritischen Stellen ausgefüllt um zu verhindern, dass sich dort Ölschlamm sammelt. Es ist kein Ölschlamm zu sehen. 
Werner filled the critical areas with silicone to prevent oil sludge from collecting there. There is no oil sludge to be seen. 

Nachdem die Ölwanne entfernt ist kann man das Getriebe abnehmen. Es ist mit nur 4 Schrauben an der Kurbelwelle angeschraubt.
After the oil pan is removed, the gearbox can be taken off. It is bolted to the crankshaft with only 4 screws.

Auf der Rückseite des Getriebes sind die Magnete für den Magneto aufgeschraubt.
The magnets for the magneto are screwed onto the back of the gearbox.

Der Isolierlack des Spulenkranzes weißt einige Beschädigungen auf.
The insulating lacquer of the mag coil has some damage.

Das ist der Trichter, welcher das durch die Schwungscheibe aufgewirbelte Öl einfängt und es nach vorn zu den ersten Lager führt. Das ist die originale Ölleitung im Motor, nicht die zusätzliche, welche außen am Motor angebracht ist.
This is the funnel that catches the oil swirled up by the flywheel and carries it forward to the first bearings. This is the original oil line in the engine, not the additional one attached to the outside of the engine.

Und jetzt kommt die Überraschung: Der Trichter hat nicht nur Öl, sondern auch Isolierlack des Spulenkranz eingefangen. Dieser Lack hat den Trichter verstopft. Ohne der zusätzlichen High Volume Schmierung, hätte die Ölversorgung der vorderen Lager nicht mehr funktioniert. Der sich ablösende Isolierlack ist Grund genug den Spulenring auszutauschen.
And now comes the surprise: The funnel has caught not only oil, but also insulating varnish of the mag coil. This varnish has clogged the funnel. Without the additional high-volume lubrication, the oil supply to the front bearings would no longer have worked. The peeling insulating lacquer is reason enough to replace the magneto coil.

Jetzt suche ich das beschädigte Lager von dem das Stück Weißmetall stammt, welches ich beim Ölwechsel gefunden habe. Die Pleuellager sehen alle gut aus.
Now I'm looking for the damaged bearing that the piece of white metal I found during the oil change came from. The connecting rod bearings all look good.

Nur beim ersten Pleuellager fehlt links ein kleines Stück.
Only the first connecting rod bearing is missing a small piece on the left.

Hier sieht man das zweite Hauptlager der Kurbellwelle. Dieses befindet sich zwischen dem zweiten und dritten Zylinder. Hier bin ich mit nicht sicher, ob in dem Spalt links und rechts nicht Weißmetall des Lagers sein sollte. Vielleicht stammen die Bruchstücke von diesem Lager.
Here you can see the second main bearing of the crankshaft. This is located between the second and third cylinder. Here I'm not sure if there shouldn't be white metal of the bearing in the gap left and right. Maybe the broken pieces are from this bearing.

Der neue Motorständer ist schon sehr nützlich. Ich kann damit den Motor aus der Garage rollen.
The new engine stand is already very useful. I can roll the engine out of the garage with it.

353. Tag - Getriebedeckel / Transmission cover

Bis der originale Motor zum Model T fertig ist, wird vermutlich noch 3 bis 4 Wochen dauern. An dem Motor, den wir gestern ausgebaut haben gibt es viel Arbeit. Die Triple Gears Lager, evtl. die Kupplungsscheiben, der Magneto, das vierte Hauptlager und die Verbrennungsrückstände im zweiten Zylinder. Das wird nicht in ein paar Tagen erledigt sein. Das beste ist, erst gar nicht darüber nachzudenken und einfach zu beginnen. Also stelle ich den Motor erst mal provisorisch auf die Gitterroste und fange mit der Demontage des Getriebedeckels an.
Until the original engine to the Model T is ready, it will probably take another 3 to 4 weeks. There is a lot of work to be done on the engine we removed yesterday. The Triple Gears bearings, possibly the clutch plates, the magneto, the fourth main bearing and the combustion residue in the second cylinder. It won't be done in a couple of days. The best thing to do is not even think about it and just get started. So for now, I put the engine on the grates temporarily and start disassembling the transmission cover.

Jetzt hat man einen schönen Blick auf den nachgerüsteten Anlasser. Um den nachzurüsten braucht man einen Getriebedeckel von einem 1919er oder späterem Modell.
Now you have a nice view of the retrofitted starter. To retrofit it, you need a gearbox cover from a 1919 or later model.

Das hier ist der Bendix, welcher das Anlasserritzel abfedert.
This is the Bendix, which cushions the starter pinion.

Nachdem alle Schrauben gelöst sind, kann der Getriebedeckel abgenommen werden jetzt hat man einen freien Blick auf die drei Trommeln, die Kupplungsfeder, die Schwungscheibe mit den Triple Gears und dahinter den Magneto.
After all screws are loosened, the gearbox cover can be removed and now you have a clear view of the three drums, the clutch spring, the flywheel with the triple gears and behind it the magneto.

Zwischen der Schwungscheibe mit dem Zahnrad für den Anlasser und dem Spulengranz des Magnetos sind die V-förmigen Magnete auf die Schwungscheibe montiert. Diese sind immer abwechselnd gepolt und erzeugen in den Spulen eine Wechselspannung von bis zu 30 Volt. Der Magneto hat noch nicht richtig funktioniert. Am Anfang lieferte er nicht genügend Strom. Er sollte die Zündung und die Scheinwerfer versorgen. Beim Einschalten des Lichtes ist der Motor ausgegangen. Nach wenigen hundert Kilometer ist er dann ganz ausgefallen. Den Magneto werde ich zuerst überprüfen. Dazu brauche ich aber noch eine Batterie.
The V-shaped magnets are mounted on the flywheel between the flywheel with the gear wheel for the starter motor and the mag coil of the magneto. These are always alternately polarized and generate an alternating voltage of up to 30 volts in the coils. The magneto did not work properly yet. At the beginning it did not supply enough current. It was supposed to supply the ignition and the headlights. When the lights were switched on, the engine went out. After a few hundred kilometers it failed completely. I will check the magneto first. But for this I still need a battery.

Der Pol, mit der die Spulenspannung abgegriffen wird sieht etwas komisch aus. Hoppala, der läßt sich ja hochklappen. Das geht ja gut los. 
The pole with which the coil voltage is tapped looks a bit strange. Oops, it can be folded up. That's a good start.

Die Trommeln sehen meines Ermessens noch gut aus. Die vordere Bremstrommel hat zwei Riefen, das sollte aber die Funktion nicht einschränken. Da habe ich aber Glück gehabt. Die Trommeln sind wohl nicht beschädigt.
The drums still look good in my estimation. The front brake drum has two grooves, but that should not limit the function. I was lucky in that respect. The drums are probably not damaged.

Das hier ist der Getriebeabgang. Der wird von dem Lager im nächsten Bild geführt. Die Antriebswelle greift in das viereckige Loch ein.
This is the gearbox output. It is guided by the bearing in the next picture. The drive shaft engages in the square hole.

Das ist das Lager, welches für den Ölverlust verantwortlich war. Das Lager hat viel Spiel und die Lagerschale selbst wackelt in dem Gehäuse.
This is the bearing that was responsible for the oil leak. The bearing has a lot of play and the bearing shell itself wobbles in the housing.

Jetzt noch zu den Bändern. Alle drei Bänder haben mit dem Stahlband, auf das sie befestigt sind noch 4,5 mm Dicke. Warum sollte ich sie austauschen?
Now about the tapes. All three straps are still 4.5 mm thick with the steel strap they are attached to. Why should I replace them?

Die Bänder sehen auch gut aus. Lediglich beim Band des ersten Ganges sieht man Abnutzungsspuren. Das Band ist zwar nicht dünner, aber auf einer Hälfte hat es wohl stärker gegriffen. Es sieht aus, als wäre es hier sehr heiß geworden.
The tapes also look good. You can only see signs of wear on the band of the first gear. The tape is not thinner, but it has probably gripped more on one half. It looks like it got very hot here.

Dieser Partikel auf dem Band ist interessant. Ich habe beim Öl Ablassen, viele solcher Partikel im Filter gefunden. Ich habe keine Idee wo diese herkommen.
This particle on the belt is interesting. I have found when draining oil, many such particles in the filter. I have no idea where they come from.

Jetzt besorge ich erst mal einen Motorständer, da ich die weiteren Arbeiten nicht auf dem Boden krabbelnd ausführen möchte.
Now I'm going to get an engine stand first, because I don't want to do the rest of the work crawling on the floor.

351. Tag - Fehlersuche 2. Tag / Troubleshooting 2nd day

Licht an der richtigen Stelle zu haben ist immer noch ein Thema in meiner Werkstatt. Vielleicht muss ich noch mal an diesem Thema arbeiten.
Having light in the right place is still an issue in my workshop. Maybe I need to work on this issue again.

Meine schöne Theorie der zwei Gänge die gleichzeitig im Eingriff sind hat sich leider nicht so richtig bestätigt. Es fehlt schlicht der entscheidende Hinweis auf einen Fehler in der Kupplungsmechanik. Darum habe ich das Thema in Facebook gepostet. Einige Gruppenmitglieder haben die Triple Gears in Verdacht. Also die drei Planetenräder, von denen man eines auf dem nächsten Bild im Hintergrund sieht. Offensichtlich kommt es öfter vor, dass die Lagerbuchsen dieser Zahnräder fressen.
My beautiful theory of two gears being engaged at the same time was unfortunately not really confirmed. There is simply no decisive indication of a fault in the clutch mechanism. That's why I posted the topic on Facebook. Some group members suspect the triple gears. That is, the three planetary gears, one of which you can see in the background of the next picture. Apparently it happens more often that the bearing bushings of these gears seize.

Wenn die Triple Gears festsitzen, ist das als würde die Kupplung geschlossen sein. Außerdem würden die Trommeln mitlaufen, was sie ja auch machen. 
Wie kann man diese Theorie beweisen? Wenn die Triple Gears in Ordnung sind, müssten sie sich in den Toleranzen des Zahnflankenspieles bewegen lassen. Vielleicht 1 bis 2mm radiale Bewegung sollten möglich sein. Ich überprüfe das und stelle fest, dass alle drei Triple Gears richtig fest sitzen. Da bewegt sich nichts. Auch mit Hammer un Schraubenzieher bewegt sich hier nichts.

When the triple gears are stuck, it's like the clutch is closed. Also, the drums would run with it, which they do. 

How can you prove this theory? If the Triple Gears are OK, they should be able to move within the tolerances of the backlash. Maybe 1 to 2mm of radial movement should be possible. I check and find that all three Triple Gears are properly tight. Nothing moves. Even with a hammer and screwdriver, nothing moves here.

Nur eines der drei Zahnräder lässt sich axial um 3mm bewegen. Aber auch dieses Zahnrad hat keine radiale Bewegung. Ich glaube damit ist die zweite Theorie hinreichend belegt.
Only one of the three gears can be moved axially by 3mm. But also this gear wheel has no radial movement. I believe that this sufficiently proves the second theory.

Jetzt muss ich nur noch die hohe mentale Barriere überwinden und mich damit abfinden, dass ich den Motor ausbauen muss. Am besten denke ich gar nicht lange darüber nach.

Ich lasse das Öl ab und finde eine Menge Metallpartikel in den Ölablassschrauben.
Now I just have to overcome the high mental barrier and come to terms with the fact that I have to remove the engine. It's best that I don't even think about it for long.

I drain the oil and find a lot of metal particles in the oil drain plugs.

Jetzt baue ich den Kühler ab. Aber zuerst muss das Wasser raus. hierbei mache ich eine interessante Erfahrung: Der Motorausbau dauert kaum länger als das Wasser aus dem Kühler rauslaufen zu lassen.

Während das Wasser unten am Kühler herausläuft habe ich alle elektrischen Leitungen entfernt, den Kardan und die Motorlager abgeschraubt, die Motorhaube entfernt, den Kühler selbst abgeschraubt, die Benzinleitung am Vergaser abgeschraubt und den Auspuff demontiert.
Now I'm going to dismantle the radiator. But first the water has to come out. Here I make an interesting experience: The engine removal takes hardly longer than letting the water run out of the radiator.

While the water is running out at the bottom of the radiator, I have removed all the electrical wires, unscrewed the gimbal and the engine mounts, removed the hood, unscrewed the radiator itself, unscrewed the fuel line at the carburetor, and disassembled the exhaust.

Jetzt kommt endlich nochmal mein schöner 50er Gabelschlüssel zum Einsatz.
Now, finally, my nice 50 open-end wrench comes into use again.

Leider hatte ich den Kettenzug nicht in der Garage, sonst hätte ich den Motor noch herausgehoben. Das hat jetzt keine Stunde gedauert.
Unfortunately, I did not have the chain hoist in the garage, otherwise I would have lifted the engine out. This has now taken less than an hour.
